The drug business behind bars is back in full swing on Paramount+’s Mayor of Kingstown season two episode seven. Drones drop packages of drugs into the yard that are then taken by the Aryan Brotherhood to the kitchen to be broken down for individual sales – all with the guards’ tacit approval.
Bunny (Tobi Bamtefa) meets with Mike (Jeremy Renner) in the prison’s kennels and points out the Aryan Brotherhood’s back in business with the help of technology. Bunny also confirms that he moved the hit off Mike and onto the District Attorney. People are tired of broken promises and now that the way’s clear, Bunny orders Mike to get the paperwork signed and get him out.
The drones are flying overhead, making deliveries every few minutes.

We're smack dab in the middle of baseball season, but that doesn't mean we can't appreciate a good football movie.
Football has taken a hit in recent years. It's often plagued with news about assaults, drugs, and incessant politics that keep the focus places other than the field and gameplay.
Enter 12 Mighty Orphans, which reminds us how football can be used to unite and raise marginalized kids from obscurity into fine young men.
Family-friendly, inspirational films once proliferated movie theaters, but an obsession with crime and violence have culled dramatic efforts from most venues, but this Ty Roberts-directed film from a script he, Lane Garrison, and Kevin Meyer adapted from Larry Dent's novel bucks the trend.
Luke Wilson stars in 12 Might Orphans as Rusty Russell, a legendary Texas football coach who coached football for the Masonic Home and School orphanage from 1927-1941.

It’s hard to imagine a football coach starting off with less than real-life hero Rusty Russell (Luke Wilson) does when he arrives at Fort Worth’s Masonic Home in “12 Mighty Orphans”: No shoes for his team, no field for his team and no team. Nothing but potential, you might say, and that’s just enough for an optimist to work with.
A veteran of World War I and an orphan in his own right, Russell took those shortcomings and revolutionized the game. He motivated just enough players to form a team and then innovated the so-called spread offense to take on bigger squads from stronger schools. The “Mighty Mites,” as they came to be known, embody practically everything that underdog sports movies are made of, and director Ty Roberts’ treatment (derived from Jim Dent’s fact-based book) hits nearly all the feel-good notes we’ve come to expect from the genre,...

Sports writer Jim Dent had the best of both worlds when deciding to write the book Twelve Mighty Orphans: The Inspiring True Story of the Mighty Mites Who Ruled Texas Football. He had ragtag kids languishing in a Texas orphanage who were able to find the self-respect and courage necessary to overcome stigmas the label “orphan” possessed on and off the field in 1927, as well as a leader in Coach Rusty Russell who would end up revolutionizing football with the advent of the spread offense. That’s feel-good camaraderie and historically relevant biography all wrapped into one to tell an unlikely story that even gets a cameo from President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. No surprise that Hollywood would come calling, too.
Ty Roberts’ 12 Mighty Orphans isn’t, however, a Disney property, despite its narrative fitting their catalog of underdog sports dramas. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing when you...

Sony Pictures Classics has acquired the worldwide distribution rights to the Luke Wilson and Martin Sheen drama “12 Mighty Orphans,” an individual with knowledge of the deal told TheWrap.
The film also stars Vinessa Shaw, Wayne Knight, Jake Austin Walker, Treat Williams, Ron White, Scott Haze and Robert Duvall. Ty Roberts is directing. The screenplay is written by Roberts, Lane Garrison and Kevin Meyer, adapted from Jim Dent’s bestselling book of the same name.
“12 Mighty Orphans” tells the true story of the Mighty Mites, the football team of a Fort Worth orphanage who, during the Great Depression, went from playing without shoes to competing in the Texas state championships.
“There is a reason underdog stories hold so much weight in the popular imagination, and we know the Mighty Mites’ true story of triumph over adversity — set in a time when much of the country was suffering — will lift the spirits of audiences worldwide.

Witless sexism masquerades as genre parody in this comedy thriller desperately devoid of comedy or thrills
It’s long been a complaint that all the big awards go to tragic dramas, while comedy, especially farce, is much harder to pull off. Nothing illustrates that truism as well as Spy Intervention. Presumably it’s meant to be a larky spoof of spy movies and marital romance – except without any of the cool gadgets, sense of danger, charm or sexual chemistry you’d expect.
Given it was clearly made on a modest budget and is the work of a first-time director (Drew Mylrea), I would normally cut it a bit of slack. But the script, credited to Mark Famiglietti and Lane Garrison, is so sexist, lazy and lacking in wit, it’s hard to find any forgiveness for the end result.

Ever since its publication in 1966, Tom Pendelton’s novel “The Iron Orchard” has been embraced as a cult favorite by many movers and shakers in the Texas oil industry — and, of course, by many more who thrill to accounts of success and excess in that storied realm — largely because of its brutally authentic yet unmistakably sympathetic portrait of a West Texas wildcatter who traverses a dramatic arc of rags to riches to really bad behavior.
Not surprisingly, there have been a few previous attempts to adapt the book into a Hollywood-huge movie. (Paul Newman and George Peppard were among the names floated for those unmade epics.) But, appropriately enough for a tale about a maverick oil man in the Lone Star State, it has taken an independent production outfit and Texas-tied filmmakers to finally bring the project to the screen. After a tour of regional festivals, the project opened first in its home state Feb.

The 22nd Critics’ Choice Award is less than a month away. We may be enjoying the shiny new TV season, and while it may seem all fun and new, critics are all to ready to begin awarding some honors. The Broadcast Television Journalists Association have officially announced, via Entertainment Weekly, the TV nominees.
Leading the pack with six nominations is The People v. O.J. Simpson, not a huge surprise given its subject matter and solid execution. Also of note are the sheer number of nominations that HBO has under its belt this year — 22 in total. Noticeably absent are this year’s Netflix Marvel shows. Despite being great TV, it still seems like critics are unwilling to give comic book adaptations their fair shake come awards season.
Oh well. Better luck next year, I suppose? The film nominations will be announced on December 1, 2016.

The 22nd Annual Critics’ Choice Awards announced its list of nominees Monday, with HBO leading the pack with 22 nominations. ABC and Netflix received 14 nominations each, followed by FX with 12. The winners will be announced at the Critics’ Choice Awards gala in Santa Monica on Sunday, December 11. T.J. Miller will serve as the show’s host.
The awards show has been swirled in controversy since sealing an exclusive partnership with Entertainment Weekly earlier this month. When the television miniseries Roots first aired in 1977, it took the country on a heart-pounding and heartbreaking journey to the past. Never before had such gripping, historically reflective fiction been portrayed on the television medium. It was necessary for a country that was just barely beginning its journey to racial equality. Now almost four decades later, a revival of the original miniseries will show America just how much our country has, and has not, changed. The re-imagined Roots will air as a four-night, 8-hour series event starting Memorial Day on the History Channel, Lifetime, and A&E. This time around

Camp X-Ray
Written and directed by Peter Sattler
USA, 2014
Director Peter Sattler leads us down the path of purported empathy and compassion in his debut film, Camp X-Ray, only to come up short in depicting the relationship between a female soldier assigned to Guantanamo Bay and a man she befriends who has been imprisoned there for eight years. Though the film is designed as a well-intentioned study of post-9/11 humanism between an unlikely pair, Sattler’s film mostly stays afloat not due to its forced and transparent dramatic structure, but strictly due to its two wonderful lead performances. It doesn’t take long to predict how this sort of film will resolve itself, and sure enough, Camp X-Ray refuses to take the road less traveled, resulting in a calibrated and phony act of tenderness that seems way too workshopped to consider taking serious.

Of all the contentious issues that have plagued Barack Obama in his two terms as U.S. President, and there have been many, perhaps none are more simplistic and complicated in equal measure than the question of what to do with the detainee camp in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. A facility that’s outlived its usefulness but remains politically sensitive for the implications of shutting it down, it still sits on the south-eastern shore of Cuba, with 149 men in custody, 76 of whom will never leave.
Camp X-Ray, the feature film debut of Peter Sattler, doesn’t offer an answer to that burning question, and even though the crux of the film is to unnecessarily remind us that Guantanamo’s detainees are people, too, it must be said that Camp X-Ray without a doubt a very well-acted and compelling reminder.

Perched at the top of this week’s flock of specialty film debuts is Birdman (Or The Unexpected Virtue Of Ignorance), a possible Oscar contender starring Michael Keaton. What really happens to those souls on either side of the cell walls in Guantanamo Bay? Camp X-Ray strives for an authentic representation, opening with real news footage depicting the smouldering Twin Towers on 9/11. Yet it frequently fails to merge those aspirations of realism with the narrative structures and conventions of Hollywood cinema.
Lead actors Kristen Stewart and Peyman Moaadi deliver highly-convincing portrayals as camp guard Amy and 'detainee' Ali - the word 'prisoner' is significantly forbidden from use. Initially devoid of emotion, Amy is worn down by Ali's persistence to strike up a rapport from his cell, with their interactions and her changing outlook forming the crux of the movie.
