Actress Vera Farmiga, known for her starring roles in movies like The Conjuring and Up in the Air, among other films, delivered a scorching cover of Slipknot’s “Duality” on Monday night (April 17th). The performance took place during a show put on by the Rock Academy music school in Woodstock, New York.
Farmiga is no stranger to singing metal songs, having belted out Iron Maiden’s “The Trooper” and Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” during previous Rock Academy shows. Her husband is Renn Hawkey, a longtime keyboardist in the industrial band Deadsy.
Prior to singing “Duality,” Farmiga told the audience, “I’ll tell you one thing: This music program is one thing we can’t get enough of. We really do have the time of our lives.”
She continued, “This is for all the chin-pressers. All the eye-pushers. The skit-scratchers. The teeth-grinders.”
The performance of “Duality” included Hawkey on keyboards.

Chicago – Vera Farmiga’s “Higher Ground” is a unique choice for a modern actress to make for her directorial debut. It feels so inspired by the ensemble-driven dramas of the ’70s and ’80s that future generations could nearly mistake it for one. It’s also a film that tackles something that terrifies so many screenwriters — faith, religion, spirituality, and their place in the world. The final result can be a bit disjointed (as films based on memoirs often are) but this is an often-daring film that tackles rarely-dramatized issues. For that reason, it’s well-worth seeing.
Blu-ray Rating: 4.0/5.0
It’s also more dramatically accomplished than it may have been given credit for in its theatrical release. Farmiga has a strong eye for composition and paces her piece well. She may have been smart to get more involved in the writing process and could have edited a bit more tightly, but...

Vera Farmiga gives herself over to a radical church in Higher Ground.
The drama film Higher Ground, directed by and starring the talented Vera Farmiga (Source Code) is based on the memoir This Dark World by Carolyn S. Briggs.
(Unofficially, the movie also shares the same name as my favorite Stevie Wonder song.)
Pregnant, married and awkward at 18 years old, Corrine Miller (played as a teen by Taissa Farmiga and as an older woman by Vera) grows more and more interested in Jesus, eventually giving herself over to a radical New Testament church. Amidst her community of self-described “Jesus Freaks,” Corrine’s daily life consists of hours of Bible study, alternative family practices and bracing for the oncoming Rapture. It’s only when her marriage begins to unravel that Corrine dares to question the religious dogma she has embraced for her entire life.

"This is where Mommy works," Vera Farmiga says to her childen, seated in a twin baby stroller pushed by her husband, Renn Hawkey. Farmiga lingers briefly with her family before entering a conference room for a round of interviews in Dallas, Texas. Farmiga has been traveling around the country to promote her new film Higher Ground, which opened in New York and Los Angeles a couple of weeks ago and expands into Dallas and other select markets tomorrow. Farmiga was five months pregnant with her second child when shooting began on Higher Ground, surely a testament to her determination to get the film made. She describes it as "a very particular kind of film. It's not plot-driven, you know what you're in for when you...

Los Angeles (Reuters) - After Vera Farmiga was nominated for an Oscar for her performance opposite George Clooney in the 2009 film "Up in the Air," the actress was offered the chance of a lifetime -- not just to act in a film, but to direct it as well.
The result is indie drama "Higher Ground," due in theaters on Friday. The film is inspired by Carolyn Brigg's memoir "This Dark World," in which a young woman enters a community of evangelical Christians, then begins to question her faith.
"Ground" follows lead character Corinne (Farmiga) over a span of 20 years. Farmiga, 38, made the film a family affair with husband Renn Hawkey a producer and musical director and her sister Taissa, 15 years-old at the time and with no prior acting experience, playing young Corinne.

We snagged a minute with Jake on his way inside, and he divulged that, unlike his role, there isn't much in his life he'd choose to do again. He has a no-looking-back policy ever since his buddy Chris Cooper gave him a piece of advice, saying it's best to live without regrets. The Oscar-nominated actress despairs at the dearth of good female parts offered by the big studios. The solution for her was simple – to direct and star in her own feature film
In the garden of Vera Farmiga's home in upstate New York, the grass is stained by a patch of darkened ash. Every time she is sent a script she doesn't like – a script that is badly written or underdeveloped or contains unchallenging female characters in a state of semi-permanent undress – Farmiga (pronounced "Far-mee-ga") puts it to one side. Then, when the pile of unwanted scripts is big enough, she builds a bonfire and burns them.
"They do get thrown in and used for fertiliser," she explains with a quiet, apologetic laugh. "It's recycling. Bonfires need to be fed and scripts, after all, are wood." There is a pause. "Especially the wooden ones."
One imagines there are a lot...

Farmiga has acted opposite George Clooney in Up In The Air, Scorsese's The Departed with the tryptich of Matt Damon/Leo DiCaprio/Mark Wahlberg, and (although we'd rather forget this one) Orphan with Peter Sarsgaard and a horrifying little girl.

#16. Higher Ground - Vera Farmiga Last year, Sundance welcomed Mark Ruffalo and Philip Seymour Hoffman's directorial debuts for a world premiere launch (Sympathy for Delicious and Jack Goes Boating respectively), seems fitting they'll do the same for an actress whose career got a major jump start at the fest with her brilliant perf in Down to the Bone. Shot this summer, it would be a "miracle" if Vera Farmiga's debut, an adaption of Carolyn Briggs' memoir This Dark World is somehow completed: juggling two new babies one called Higher Ground, the other one in a literal sense of the word. Scripted by Briggs and Tim Metcalfe, featuring Farmiga, Donna Murphy, John Hawkes, Dagmara Dominczyk and Joshua Leonard, and lensed by Debra Granik's Dp Michael McDonough, this follows outsider Corinne Walkers’ (Farmiga) journey from childhood to motherhood. Growing up, Corinne faces many challenges. A traumatic loss is...

Pregnant actress Vera Farmiga refused to stop working on her directorial debut Higher Ground over the summer - but admits she found it "tough" spending long days on set while expecting.
The Up In The Air star and husband Renn Hawkey are set to welcome their second child next month, but rather than take time off, Farmiga carried on with her punishing schedule.
She has been busy directing and starring in Higher Ground, an adaption of born-again Christian Carolyn Briggs' memoir, This Dark World: A Memoir of Salvation Found and Lost - and Farmiga is pleased she carried on with the project.
She says, "I've been working on it for the whole summer in my second trimester of pregnancy which was tough.
"I directed it and starred in it simultaneously. It was a super-low budget film which traces a little girl through childhood, teenage pregnancy and adulthood in search for 'higher ground'. It was wild to be on the other side of the camera!"...
