"Do you have it in ya to make it epic?"
Based on what we see in this final trailer for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, ol' Dementus has very little to worry about.
Tickets are now on sale for George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road prequel, and Warner Bros. has debuted one more teaser to ensure that engines are well and truly revved and ready for May 24. We also have a new featurette with stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth discussing the movie, and a couple of new posters.
Full reviews are still under embargo, but the first social media reactions were highly positive - although it doesn't sound like Miller has quite managed to surpass Fury Road when it comes to sheer adrenaline-pumping action.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga arrives in theaters laster this month, and as the press tour kicks off in Sydney, Australia (you can check out some photos of stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth below), Warner Bros. has shared a tonne of new promotional material for George Miller's Fury Road prequel.
In addition to a new international poster and still, we have three action-packed TV spots.
The spots reuse some footage from the previous teasers, but there is also quite a bit of new stuff, including a face-off between Furiosa and Dementus in which the Dark Angel prepares to test the warlord's "high pain threshold."

“Furiosa,” George Miller’s prequel to his Oscar-winning “Mad Max: Fury Road,” will have its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
Anya Taylor-Joy stars as the titular warrior in the epic saga that spans 15 years and charts the title character’s origin story. A young Furiosa is kidnapped from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus, played by Chris Hemsworth. As they trek across the Wasteland, the gang come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war over dominance, Furiosa faces many trials to find her way home. Oh yeah, and she’s definitely out to kill those who murdered her family.

Turns out, Anya Taylor-Joy has a shaved head in “Mad Max: Fury Road” prequel “Furiosa.”
The “Queen’s Gambit” star recently told Empire magazine that director George Miller told her to not shave her head for the role; however, in the new trailer, a buzzed cut is boasted by the star, mirroring Charlize Theron’s look as Furiosa for “Fury Road.” Taylor-Joy is almost certainly sporting a wig in the film; we sure haven’t seen her growing back long locks in the time since.
“I feel very lucky that, from the second I read the script, I just knew this person. I felt so fiercely protective over Furiosa, and fiercely protective of her interests,” Taylor-Joy said of taking over the character from Theron. She also told IndieWire that “Furiosa” was the “dirtiest and the bloodiest” she’s ever been onscreen.

The first official trailer for Warner Bros. Pictures’ Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga confirms two important details. One, Anya Taylor-Joy looks totally badass as the titular character. And two, the long wait between Mad Max films has been worth it.
The two-and-a-half minute trailer’s loaded with gritty action, and Oscar-winning filmmaker George Miller’s epic action thriller captures its predecessor’s vibe.
In addition to Emmy nominee Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit), the Fury Road prequel stars Chris Hemsworth, Alyla Browne, and Tom Burke. Miller co-wrote the screenplay with Mad Max: Fury Road‘s Nico Lathouris.
Miller reunites with production designer Colin Gibson, editor Margaret Sixel, sound mixer Ben Osmo, costume designer Jenny Beavan, and makeup designer Lesley Vanderwalt for Furiosa. His behind-the-scenes team also includes first assistant director Pj Voeten, second unit director, stunt coordinator Guy Norris, director of photography Simon Duggan, composer Tom Holkenborg, sound designer Robert Mackenzie,...

Dozens of sound designers, engineers and mixers have signed a petition protesting the Academy’s decision to award the sound Oscar during its pre-telecast hour on Sunday.
A source close to the sound branch also revealed that guild members are planning on wearing their guild badges upside down as a form of silent protest over the demotion of crafts at the Oscars.
Karol Urban, President of the Cinema Audio Society confirmed the protest might go one step further. In a statement, Urban said, “This weekend, the Oscars may be turned upside down as we may see winners from all categories accept their Oscars upside down in a silent show of solidarity with the eight affected categories. We are all filmmakers of equal importance.”
More than 80 people, including 16 Academy Award winners, signed the letter to the Academy, which is posted in full below.

Ahead of the 2021 Oscars, the academy made the decision to merge the Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing categories into one. The films vying for the second annual Best Sound prize are “Belfast,” “Dune,” “No Time to Die,” “The Power of the Dog,” and “West Side Story.” Our current odds indicate that “Dune” (31/10) will be victorious, followed in order of likelihood by “West Side Story” (39/10), “No Time to Die” (4/1), “The Power of the Dog” (9/2), and “Belfast” (9/2).
The craftspeople included in the current lineup have collectively amassed a staggering 86 previous nominations and 16 wins for their sound work in 57 films. Those responsible for the largest chunks are Andy Nelson and Gary Rydstrom, whose shared bid for “West Side Story” brings their respective individual totals to 22 and 19. Rydstrom has collected seven trophies over the years, including two each for “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” (1992), “Jurassic Park” (1994), and “Saving Private Ryan” (1999) and one for...

Jane Campion emerged as the big winner during Sunday night’s Critics Choice Awards, winning three major victories from the Critics Choice Association, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Director.
Campion’s first opportunity to address the room of celebrity attendees and journalists came late in the show, when she received the Best Director award. The New Zealand-born filmmaker used the top portion of her speech to address the “incredible women” in attendance, including Venus and Serena Williams. Over the past week or two we’ve seen a bit of wavering in this year’s highly competitive Best Picture race as one front-runner or another misses out on a nomination or award and loses support from its most fervent backers. In the case of Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog,” for instance, the film is still considered the favorite for Best Picture among the Gold Derby odds-makers, but movies like “Coda” have been getting more recent support — from the SAG Awards specifically. Although 13 Experts are still backing Campion’s movie, eight others are picking one of three other rivals. That’s especially interesting since 20 out of 21 Experts have Campion winning Best Director, so why is there less confidence in “Power of the Dog” taking Best Picture as well?
September was a long time ago, but “Power of the Dog” was already considered the front-runner back then...

“On any film, but especially with Jane, everything is story and character focused,” says “The Power of the Dog” supervising sound editor Robert Mackenzie about working with director Jane Campion on her 1920s-set Netflix Western. For instance, the ranch house where much of the film takes place is “sparsely furnished, dark, oppressive. It’s a metaphor for Phil’s personality. So with the sound, we tried to reflect that by making it drafty and creaky and oppressive sounding.”
The film tells the story of rancher Phil Burbank (Benedict Cumberbatch), who reacts with hostility when his brother (Jesse Plemons) suddenly marries a widow (Kirsten Dunst) and pays for the education of her son (Kodi Smit-McPhee). But while the film takes place in Montana, it was shot in New Zealand. “We’ve been to Montana, but we don’t live there. We don’t have that boots-on-the-ground knowledge of the seasons. But...

When Robert Mackenzie, supervising sound editor and re-recording mixer on Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog,” first read the script, he felt the story not only held a mirror up to life but challenged his thinking.
Mackenzie worked to capture the sounds of Montana in this story featuring Benedict Cumberbatch as Phil Burbank, an intimidating presence who looms over a sprawling Montana ranch. When his brother, George, played by Jesse Plemons, returns home with his wife, Rose, played by Kirsten Dunst, and her son, Peter, played by Kodi Smit-McPhee, he becomes resentful of the new dynamic.
MacKenzie says, Campion’s approach to sound is one of reverence and innocence. He says, “This allows the sound team to explore a world that has been created within the story. Any and all preconceived ideas about what sound contributes to a story are both equally encouraged and abandoned.”

Co-written with Christos Tsiolkas, Aaron Wilson’s 1970s-set Little Tornadoes depicts a newly-single father’s efforts to weather the turbulence of change – in his life and in the world around him.
Introverted Leo (Mark Leonard Winter) is a steelworker at his small town’s local plant. After his wife abandons him without explanation, leaving him to care for their two young children, he is bereft–barely able to cook a decent meal or keep the household running. So when a recently-arrived Italian colleague suggests that his sister, Maria (Silvia Colloca), act as surrogate homemaker, Leo reluctantly accepts. But can one woman’s warm, nurturing presence fill the void left by another, and can Leo yield to the winds of change?
Producers include Ian Anderson, Katrina Fleming, Christian Pazzaglia, Susan Schmidt and Wilson. Stefan Duscio is the cinematographer, composer Robert Mackenzie, editor Cindy Clarkson and production designer Tim Burgin.

The team at Spectrum Films hope Simon McQuoid’s Mortal Kombat was just the first of many major films to use its refurbished Atmos mix theatre.
The Fox Studios-based post house completed a full interior rebuild of the Dolby-accredited theatre prior to coming on board with the project last year.
Spectrum provided Di, Final Mix, and deliverables for the action blockbuster from Sydney, collaborating across international borders to deliver the final product.
The same could also be said about the theatre upgrade, for which Spectrum head of sound Angus Robertson worked with US-based acoustic consultants Salter across eight weeks to transform the facility’s interior, before conducting four weeks of testing.
The process involved performing initial test recordings inside the theatre, with the results sent to Salter’s Felipe Tavera and Jason Duty.
After analysing the recordings, the pair recommended a design that involved a complete deconstruction of the interior,...

George Lucas, Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Soderbergh, Ridley Scott, and the list goes on when it comes to directors who have revisited their past work and made new edits while undergoing the restoration process. Hong Kong master Wong Kar-wai now joins the club as the long-awaited 4K restorations of his most beloved films have now arrived virtually ahead of a likely Criterion release next year.
If you don’t want to opt for a side-by-side analysis, the director himself has provided an overview of the editing changes he made during the restoration work. Most notably, Fallen Angels is now presented in cinemascope, which was his original intention for the film, while Chungking Express and In the Mood for Love are now back to their original aspect ratios of 1.66:1. He also had to cut a bit from Happy Together due to negatives getting lost. Summing it up, he says, “I...

Timothée Chalamet and David Michôd on the set of ‘The King’.
David Michôd’s 2010 debut feature Animal Kingdom propelled him to international attention. But as that was happening, the writer-director wasn’t sure where to go next with his career: so many of the studios were shutting down their specialty divisions.
“Nobody was making those properly resourced, mid-budgeted movies for grown ups. And then Netflix arrived,” he tells If.
Michôd has since made two films for the streamer: 2017 Brad Pitt vehicle War Machine and the upcoming The King, starring Timothée Chalamet, Joel Edgerton (who also co-wrote and co-produced the film with Michôd), Lily Rose Depp, Sean Harris, Robert Pattinson and Ben Mendelsohn.
The King premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September and is currently in limited theatrical release ahead of a launch on Netflix November 1. Last week, it garnered some 13 Aacta nominations.

‘Top End Wedding’, ‘Hearts and Bones’ and ‘The King’ are among the 34 longlisted films.
Some 34 feature films will compete for nominations for this year’s Aacta Awards, and the longlist covers a diverse range of titles, from box office earners like Top End Wedding and Storm Boy, through to critically lauded films like The Nightingale and micro budget indies such as Suburban Wildlife.
However, perhaps the most notable inclusion in the longlist is David Michôd’s Netflix Original The King, which premiered at Venice Film Festival last week to an eight-minute standing ovation.
Typically, to be eligible for Aacta Awards, a film – even when made for a streaming platform – must have paid cinema screenings in Australia or local festival play.

‘Top End Wedding’
Wayne Blair’s Top End Wedding has been hailed by reviewers at the Sundance Film Festival as a charming and funny cross-cultural romantic comedy which deals with love and family and second chances.
Produced by Goalpost Pictures’ Rosemary Blight and Kylie du Fresne and Kojo’s Kate Croser, the film co-written by Miranda Tapsell and Joshua Tyler was also praised for its depiction of Indigenous Australians and culture.
Tapsell plays Sydney lawyer Lauren, who is engaged to fellow lawyer Lee (Gwilym Lee). Their wedding plans are disrupted when Lauren’s mother Daffy (Ursula Yovich) walks out on her husband Trevor (Huw Higginson), leaving a cryptic note and her mobile phone. They have 10 days to find her and to pull off their wedding amid the chaos.
Universal will launch the film in Australia on May 2 after taking over eOne’s theatrical marketing and distribution in April. Films Boutique is handling international sales.

Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney poses backstage with the Oscar® for Adapted screenplay, for work on “Moonlight”

I did ‑‑ but ‑‑ and because ‑‑ I wanted to see the card to see the card. And Warren refused to show the card to anybody before he showed it to me. And so he did. This year's Oscars ceremony went off alright, but not without a hitch (or two).
During the In Memoriam section, a photo of Australian producer Jan Chapman (Love Serenade, Lantana, The Babadook) was shown next to the name of late costume designer Janet Patterson, with whom Chapman worked on several Jane Campion films including The Piano, Bright Star and Holy Smoke..
Patterson died in October last year. Her final film was Thomas Vinterberg's adaptation of Far From the Madding Crowd, starring Carey Mulligan and Matthias Schoenaerts..
.I was devastated by the use of my image in place of my great friend and long-time collaborator Janet Patterson," the still-very-much-breathing Chapman told Variety..
"I had urged her agency to check any photograph which might be used and understand that they were told that the Academy had it covered.

Sound mixer Kevin O’Connell had lost out 20 times before last night’s ceremony.
Forget Moonlight, Emma Stone or even Asghar Fahardi, the most heart-warming winner at the 2017 Oscars was Kevin O’Connell, who picked up the best sound mixing award for Hacksaw Ridge.
Sound engineer O’Connell had previously been nominated 20 times without winning, leading The Guardian to dub him the “unluckiest nominee in the history of the Academy Awards”.
After finally winning the Oscar for Hacksaw Ridge alongside Andy Wright, Robert Mackenzie and Peter Grace, O’Connell said: “I can’t even tell you the experience that it was for me. As much as I thought I was going to know what it felt like, I didn’t.
“And I have to tell you, it was the greatest feeling in my entire life and I’m so grateful for the opportunity I had, especially to work with these guys and I’m so grateful. It’s amazing...

In one of the biggest shocks in Academy Awards history, the final award of the night, Best Picture, was mistakenly announced.
Moonlight won best picture at the 89th Oscars after La La Land was erroneously reported announced as the winner.
Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway read La La Land right after Emma Stone won best actress for her role in the modern-day musical. After the cast took the stage, a producer for La La Land corrected things and said, “[Actually] ‘Moonlight’ is the winner … this is not a joke.”
The La Times exclusively spoke to best picture presenter Warren Beatty backstage after the history-making mistake that briefly awarded La La Land the honor instead of rightful winner Moonlight and the legendary director explained what happened onstage.
“I looked down at the card and thought, ‘This is very strange, because it says best actress.’ Maybe there was a misprint. I don’t know what happened.

Andy Wright, Robert Mackenzie and Peter Grace won an Academy Award for best sound mixing. And though they were Australia’s only winners, the number of nominees still made 2017 a special year
With Australia receiving a record 14 Academy Award nominations, 2017 was always going to be a special year at the Oscars. Not many Aussies walked out of Hollywood’s night of nights wielding golden statuettes (more on that in a moment) but nobody can say we didn’t occupy more spots on the ballot box – or take home more show bags worth $300,000 – than ever before.
Ordinarily this kind of “at least we kept lots of seats warm” observation might sound like loser talk. But it’s hard not to feel a twinge of national pride when, for the first time, two of the best picture nominees were Australian (Lion and Hacksaw Ridge) and – also for the first time – one of...

Winners are now indicated. I correctly guessed 11 out of the 24 categories, which is slightly better than last year, when I guessed 10 out of 24.

I’ve now seen as many of the nominated films as I will be able to before tonight’s ceremony, and here finally are my educated guesses about who will take home each award — projected winners are Xed at the lefthand side. Keep in mind: those Xes don’t represent whom I think should win Oscars but whom I think will win, based on what little I can grasp about how the Academy thinks. I’ve also noted which nominees I think should win. Kindly note that this is not necessarily my take on who did the best performance/writing/FX/whatever of the year, but whom I think is best among the nominees.

“La La Land,” as expected, dominated the Oscar crafts, with Damien Chazelle’s musical valentine taking four awards for cinematography, production design, score, and original song. Still, it was predicted to win at least three more.
And it was a great night for Disney and its trio of winners: the zeitgeist-grabbing “Zootopia” (animated feature), Disney Animation’s third Oscar in four years, which trumpeted tolerance ahead of the Presidential election; Alan Barillaro’s fine-feathered “Piper” (animated short), Pixar’s R&D sculpting project that ended its 15-year shorts drought; and Jon Favreau’s “The Jungle Book” (VFX), which innovated photographic-based realism. The award was shared by production VFX supervisor Rob Legato, Mpc’s VFX supervisor Adam Valdez, Weta Digital’s VFX supervisor Dan Lemmon, and Andrew R. Jones, the animation supervisor.

Sunday’s 89th Academy Awards are underway at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney took to the stage at the Dolby Theatre in a popular adapted screenplay win for Moonlight as the drama earned its second win of the night.
Moments earlier Kenneth Lonergan accepted the original screenplay award for Manchester By The Sea in the film’s first prize. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon – winners of this award for Good Will Hunting 19 years ago – presented the honour to Lonergan. Damon was a producer on the film.
Meryl Streep used her Oscar show platform to pay subtle homage to the unifying power of film when she joined Javier Bardem on stage at the Dolby Theatre to present the cinematography award.
“Truth is hard to reveal,” Streep said, “but when it happens on the movie screen filmgoers no matter where they are from, feel their hearts soar.”

Governors act on recommendation of sound branch executive committee.
Greg P Russell, who worked on Michael Bay’s war film 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi, has been removed from the list of sound mixing nominees for an alleged violation of Academy campaign regulations.
The Academy announced the development on Saturday – one day before the 89th annual Academy Awards – after it emerged Russell had called fellow members of the sound branch during the nominations phase to make them aware of his work on the film.
The action is in direct violation of campaign regulations that prohibit telephone lobbying.
An additional nominee from the film will not replace Russell. The remaining sound mixing nominees from the film are Gary Summers, Jeffrey J. Haboush and Mac Ruth.
The Academy’s board of governors voted on Thursday to act upon the recommendation of the sound branch executive committee.

“I’ve never been more appreciative, humbled and just overall excited about the fact that I’ve been nominated,” says Hacksaw Ridge sound mixer Kevin O’Connell of his 21st Oscar nomination — which he shares with Peter Grace, Robert Mackenzie and Andy Wright — as we sit down at The Hollywood Reporter to record an episode of THR‘s ‘Awards Chatter’ podcast. “I don’t want to say I took it for granted in the past, but I certainly don’t take it for granted anymore.”
O’Connell, 59, has worked in Hollywood for nearly 40 years, and is one of the most respected practitioners of his craft. But he is best known for a dubious distinction: in Oscar history, no person has accumulated more nominations without ever winning. His noms span 33 years, from 1983’s Terms of Endearment through Mel Gibson‘s 2016 war film,...

The nominations for the 89th Academy Awards are in and La La Land leads the pack with 14 nominations! I knew La La Land was going to explode at this event, and it's probably going to end up taking home many of the awards is was nominated for. The 14 nominations ties the record with 1997's Titanic and 1950's All About Eve.
Arrival ended up with eight nominations as did Moonlight, while Hacksaw Ridge, Lion, and Manchester by the Sea all got six. Deadpool ended up with zero nominations. I was hoping to see it somewhere on the list, but it looks like all that hype didn't work.
Every film and actor who was nominated for their work deserves to be on this list, so congratulations to them all! There are so many great films and actors to root for, but there can be only one winner in each category.
