A veteran mom of four boys, Patricia Heaton has seen — and smelled — it all when it comes to raising her sons.
“They literally come up to me and say, ‘Do I need to shower?’ And then I have to smell their armpits,” she tells iVillage.
For now, Heaton is the only one keeping their hygiene in check. Following a “flutter of activity” when her oldest son Samuel David, now 16, entered high school, The Middle star says her boys have shown little interest in dating.
“They … all tried it, but it wasn’t very much fun. So now...

It was a Christmas present gone wrong for Patricia Heaton and one of her sons! Following a recent appearance on The View, the actress took time backstage for a mommy confession, revealing that she gifted her son, “who’s kind of a worrier and hypochondriac,” with the book 100 Things That Will Kill You.

David Livingston/Getty Patricia Heaton is poised for a return to the small screen in the upcoming ABC sitcom The Middle, and like her character in Everybody Loves Raymond she’ll again be playing a mom. “I relate to every single thing,” the 51-year-old actress and mom-of-four tells Entertainment Tonight. “This is a very comfortable character for me to be in.”
Case in point? In one scene, Patricia is depicted putting breakfast together in a hurry by microwaving pancakes for her children. It is a frenzied state of being she recalls all too well. “I don’t do it so much anymore, but when the kids were little and I was working a lot, that was totally me,” she admits. “Although we did, like, toaster waffles more.” Her revelation — and her new character — is something she hopes other women will also relate to.
