Max’s “Love & Death” revived 1970s Texas suburbia through the direction of the show’s costume designer, Audrey Fisher, and production designer, Suzuki Ingerslev.
The limited series tells the true story of the murder of Betty Gore (Lily Rabe) by Candy Montgomery (Elizabeth Olsen) after Betty discovered that Candy was having an affair with her husband, Allan Gore (Jesse Plemons). The story made headlines through Candy’s sensational trial.
The designers sourced products from all over the country and enlisted help from costume warehouses, rag houses, thrift stores, antique shops, tile manufacturers, wallpaper printers and Facebook Marketplace.
Here, Ingerslev and Fisher break down some of the looks for Variety.
Ingerslev: I glorified it a little bit without making it too precious. Our point of storytelling is to make sure that people know what period they’re in. There are key elements that are always going to trigger that. You...

In an early episode of “Love and Death,” Candy Montgomery (Elizabeth Olsen) goes shopping and tries on a fitted navy blue dress with red trim. It’s stylish, modern (for 1978) and perhaps not the first outfit you might call to mind when picturing a churchgoing housewife in a bucolic Dallas suburb in the late ’70s.
“My experience when designing costumes, especially when you’re working in a smaller town environment is that the fashion is a little bit behind because if you’re in New York, it’s like the fashion is coming in quickly. … Even in Dallas, there would be a more fashion-forward look, but I feel like in this smaller environment, everything is a little behind,” costume designer Audrey Fisher tells Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video interview above). “That also allowed Candy and Sherry (Krysten Ritter) to be sort of the most interesting and cute, fashion-wise. On the HBO Max limited series “Love & Death,” Candy Montgomery (Elizabeth Olsen) reinvents herself several times, beginning as a churchgoing Texas housewife and ending as a pariah on trial for a brutal axe murder. And her wardrobe is an integral part of her journey, which made working on “Love & Death” both a challenge and a delight for costume designer Audrey Fisher. “It’s always fun for a costume designer to create a character within a character,” she told IndieWire. Fisher designed over a hundred costumes for Candy; here are a handful of examples that track the character’s transformation throughout the show.
“Love & Death” begins in the summer of 1978, when Candy is a well-liked member of her Methodist community. Fisher researched ’70s fashions and scoured magazines like Cosmopolitan and Good Housekeeping to find looks for Candy, who she felt would be just a little more lively and...

In director Karyn Kusama’s “destroyer,” Nicole Kidman plays Erin Bell, a detective and tortured soul who has spent nearly 20 years punishing herself for her role in an undercover operation gone wrong.
Kidman delivers an intense, gripping performance, and a team of artisans were key in creating the highly distressed look that helped the Oscar-winning beauty convincingly inhabit a down-at-the-heels character who ages — from her mid-20s into her late 40s — in the film.
Makeup designer Bill Corso explains that he set out to make Kidman “look like a real woman who’s had a hard life. She’s a detective. She has let herself go. She smokes. She drinks.” All her bad choices had to show on her face, so Corso turned to photos of aging rock stars for inspiration.

It's hard to begin listing everything we'll miss about HBO’s True Blood series when the final episode airs on Sunday. But one thing is for certain: we're sad to say goodbye to the seven seasons of supernatural-meets-the-South style, dreamed up by the show's costume designer Audrey Fisher. In celebration of True Blood’s finale, Fisher takes us on a trip down memory lane via her favorite spots for sourcing the quirky outfits, fabrics and jewelry that help transport us to a world of waitresses, werewolves, and one unforgettable and utterly fabulous short-order cook. Spoiler alert: If you haven’t watched this week’s episode of True Blood, “Lost Cause,” stop reading now. (Or, at least read our full recap first.) The Pam and Eric show continued as the duo traveled to Dallas in search of Sarah Newlin at a Ted Cruz fundraiser hosted at the Bush Library. We spoke to True Blood’s costume designer, Audrey Fisher, about their memorable formal wear. And because we’re still obsessed with those flashbacks to 1986, 1996, and 2006, we got the backstory on those looks as well.

Saturday night's 16th Annual Costume Designer Guild Awards were a treat for both film fans (Amy Adams won an award; Raquel Welch presented one) and major fashion nerds like ourselves (True Blood costume designer Audrey Fisher told us about her cool J. But, as we quickly learned at the glittery black tie affair, film people are completely enamored with onscreen style, too. On the season 5 premiere of True Blood, Pam (Kristin Bauer van Straten) tossed her usual bold colors and skimpy skirts to slip into something a little more comfortable — a buttery yellow sweatsuit adorned with kittens, butterflies and pretty flowers. Kristin Bauer loves her job on "True Blood." The veteran TV actress has played scene-stealing, zinger-spouting Pam for five seasons now and isn't shy about her love for all things wicked, even Walmart sweatsuits.
"I'm really so happy with the world I'm living in. I hope it goes to 17 years," Bauer told The Huffington Post in a phone interview. "I hope we have vampires with walkers and denture fangs. That's my fantasy."
Season 5 of "True Blood" kicked off with a dirt nap for Pam as she threw on Sookie's Walmart finest and sired Tara (Rutina Wesley), turning her former enemy into a vampire. Below, Bauer dissects the new dynamic between Pam and Tara, the upcoming twists and turns of Season 5 and the ever-fabulous fashions of Pam.
After the premiere, I think the one question you must be getting asked is, "Was that a real Walmart sweatsuit?"
[Laughs.] Amazingly, I don't know.

Costume designer Audrey Fisher gets plenty of juicy material to work with dressing the characters on HBO's hit series "True Blood."
"I have to design all these incredible fantasy scenes," she says, "and things like the beautiful turn-of-the-century outfit Pam (Kristin Bauer van Straten) wears in a flashback create a lot of drama and excitement and intensity in our department."
Fisher loves dressing Pam because there is a lot of latitude in how she conceptualized the character with creator Alan Ball.
"Pam's got certain eras she really loves the designs from. She considers herself like a Barbie doll and considers her clothes like costumes. At Fangtasia we've had a Lara Croft outfit, a biker bitch outfit, a Barbarella outfit, a black widow outfit. It's fun for us to come up with a theme for each outfit. ... Just how dedicated is actor Kristin Bauer when it comes to her fan favorite role of Pam on True Blood? So much so that unlike many actors who consciously make an effort to tackle roles completely different than their regular series gig while on hiatus, Bauer prefers to stay in character. Which is precisely why tonight sees her brushing up on her bitchiness by stepping into the stilettos of one of Hollywood’s most iconic evil queens: Maleficent, the mistress of all evil.
See for yourself what she had to say about the role in addition to Maleficent’s similarities to True Blood’s Pam, after the jump.
How familiar were you with Maleficent prior to accepting this role on Once Upon A Time?
Kristin Bauer: I believe the last time I saw Sleeping Beauty I was seven, but we all remember her, I mean she was so amazing.

While one of the joys of HBO’s True Blood is anytime fiery, ultra-sexual vampire Pam Swynford De Beaufort appears on the screen, her portrayer, actress Kristin Bauer, is taking a deep, satisfying bite out of another juicy role – "Mistress of Evil" Maleficent from Disney’s Sleeping Beauty – in her guest starring turn on the new ABC series Once Upon A Time.
The new ABC fantasy drama got off to a strong start last week when it premiered to over 12 million households, which bodes well for the network that has seen other new series like Charlie’s Angels crash and burn (and Pan Am isn’t looking too healthy either).

"Glee" costume designer Lou Eyrich woke up Emmy nominations morning to see how the show fared, but was "in disbelief" when she learned she received a nomination herself.
"The very first thought was, 'Ugh, what am I going to wear?'," she tells Zap2it. "That was the first thing I did too. I texted [show creator] Ryan Murphy,'What are we going to wear?'"
The success of "Glee" in its freshman season translated into 19 emmy nominations total, with Eyrich and Marisa Aboitiz nominated for best costume design alongside the costumers for "The Good Wife," "Mad Men," "30 Rock" and "The Tudors."
Eyrich discusses the Emmys and looks back at some of "Glee's" standout style episodes:
How did you celebrate your nomination?
Lou Eyrich: A bunch of us went out for dinner, and one of the makeup girls threw a cocktail party for all of us too. It was really fun.
