A trafficker of rare animals finds herself in the crosshairs of a literal witch hunt when a young boy plummets to his death following a visit in Saïd Belktibia’s Hood Witch, celebrating its international premiere at this year’s SXSW Film Festival. When we meet Nour, a powerful Golshifteh Farahani proving once again that she is a force to be reckoned with, the image is almost comical. A woman going through security at an airport is stopped for a check, only to discover that she is literally crawling with tiny rare animals strapped to her clothes. Nour is an entrepreneur, she provides the rare animals that local mystics and witches need to complete their spells, which are relied upon by many in the close-knit Muslim community...

“A revenge ghost story with elements of a monster movie” is how Irish helmer Damian McCarthy describes his latest chiller, which is set to bring “plenty of scares and a few a few laughs” to SXSW’s late-night line-up. A supernatural horror centered around spooky trinkets, Oddity follows a blind medium (You Are Not My Mother’s Carolyn Bracken) as she uncovers the truth behind her twin sister’s death with the help of a terrifying wooden mannequin.

Dealing with the ramifications of war is a daunting endeavour for a filmmaker. There are no shortcuts to how the camera should portray displacement and tragedy. This much is clear in Anna Fahr's first feature-length narrative project, which follows two sisters seeking refuge from the Syrian war in Lebanon's Beqaa Valley. Far from the conflict zone, the cinematic eye focuses on their struggles with an unwanted new life. Their contrasting hopes for the future paint an emotional picture of resilience and tell a necessary story about the heartbreak of war.
Arriving in Lebanon at the onset of the Syrian war, Rima (Maria Hassan) and Nour (Hala Hosni) quickly discover their deal for decent accommodation has fallen through. Arriving in a makeshift refugee camp, they set out to arrange for the arrival of Firas (Moe Lattouf), Rima's husband, who stayed behind to collect his last paychecks. Forced by her pregnancy to prioritise.

In Tales of the Purple House, French-Iraqi filmmaker Abbas Fahdel and his wife, Lebanese artist Nour Ballouk, offer a collaborative video diary of the last few years of their lockdown life and, through that figurative keyhole, their account of the unraveling world outside. Their film is about domestic things––weather, painting, lots of cats––but it’s also about shockwaves of Covid and the Syrian refugee crisis, and of the explosion that rocked Beirut in August 2020, leveling the city’s port and taking over 200 lives. (It is also about their government’s failure to adequately respond to these things.)
Purple House is a reminder that this period––rocky for us all––has been astonishingly turbulent for the Lebanese, even by their country’s historic standards. There is no shortage of stories there, and Fahdel doesn’t skimp: over a lengthy, indulgent 186 minutes, we observe not only the slow change of...

The Baby is probably the weirdest show you’ll see in a long time. But anyone with a dark sense of humour, a stomach for gore and about four hours on their hands really should check out The Baby. Ostensibly a comedy horror, but also a family drama, a tragic love story, a nightmarish look at motherhood and a paranoid, supernatural parable (in eight handy 30 minute-or-less episodes), The Baby tells the story of Natasha (Michelle de Swarte), a woman with no kids, who is more than content to stay that way until a baby literally falls off a cliff and into her arms. This is no ordinary baby… it’s a killer baby! Or a certainly a sort of Final Destination-powers, Midwich Cuckoos-got-nothing-on-you infant who destroys anyone who tries to separate him from his chosen surrogate mother/victim by causing accidents or occasionally engaging in out-and-out mind control.

A horror comedy co-production with Sky, and produced by Sister and Proverbial Pictures, The Baby presents a darkly funny, raw examination of motherhood, from the perspective of a woman who doesn’t want to be one.
Michelle De Swarte (“The Duchess”) stars as 38-year-old Natasha, who is furious that her closest friends are all having babies. But when she is unexpectedly landed with a baby of her own, her life dramatically implodes. Controlling, manipulative, but incredibly cute, the baby twists Natasha’s life into a surreal horror show. To whom does the title of Maysaloun Hamoud’s assured, empathetic debut “In Between” refer? To her characters, of course, who are stuck in between their conservative cultures and their liberal desires. But also to Hamoud herself, who has been both widely praised and roundly condemned for her blunt take on the lives of young Arab-Israeli women. The fictional friends who’ve earned such disapproval are Laila (vibrant standout Mouna Hawa), Salma (Sana Jammelieh) and Nour (Shaden Kanboura), 20-something roommates in Tel Aviv. Laila is the rebel, a chain-smoking, hard-partying Palestinian lawyer. And Nour is her obvious opposite, a pious Muslim student.
