As the first major film festival to take place in the pandemic era, there’s a gravity to the 77th Venice Biennale simply by virtue of the show going on under such fraught global conditions.
Yet 2020 has also sparked an unprecedented awareness of racial discourse, and as such, it’s essential to note that there hasn’t been a Black member of the competition jury since 2004, when Spike Lee was part of a jury led by British director John Boorman. People of color have fared mildly better across the same 16-year period, with a recurring theme of one East Asian creative per 7-9 person jury.
This year, the jury that will decide a winner from the Official Selection is entirely white.

Blur reunited for the first time in nearly four years for a surprise gig in East London Friday during Damon Albarn’s annual Africa Express concert. Blur last performed together in November 2015 following the release of The Magic Whip.
For the performance, Albarn rejoined his band mates Dave Rowntree, Alex James and Graham Coxon to play “Song 2,” “Tender” and “Clover Over Dover”; the latter performance marked the live debut of the Parklife track. For “Tender,” the band was joined by London Community Gospel Choir and Rokia Traoré.

The 12 days of the prestigious 68th Festival de Cannes came to a close on Sunday (May 24, 2015) when the winners were announced during the Awards Ceremony.
The Palme d’Or went to Jacques Audiard’s Dheepan. To escape the civil war in Sri Lanka, a former soldier, a young woman and a little girl pose as a family. They end up settling in a housing project outside Paris. They barely know one another, but try to build a life together.
The prize for Best Actress was shared by Rooney Mara for her role in Carol, by Todd Haynes and Emmanuelle Bercot, for her role in Maïwenn’s Mon Roi.
Best Actor went to Vincent Lindon for his role in Stéphane Brizé’s La Loi Du Marche (The Measure Of A Man).

The Cannes Film Festival is the most prestigious film festival in the world, and its top prize, the Palme d’Or, is film's highest honor. Consequently, people have really fervid feelings about what they think should win. Regardless of which film takes whichever award, it’s usually controversial. This year, the main competition jury, considered by some to be one of the best juries in the festival’s long, illustrious history, was headed by Joel and Ethan Coen (Fargo, No Country for Old Men, The Big Lebowski), and featured Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth), Jake Gyllenhaal, Xavier Dolan (Mommy), Sophie Marceau, Rossy de Palma, Rokia Traoré, and Sienna Miller. Here are the films that won at this year’s Cannes, as reported by Indiewire. Let the angry think pieces commence.Palme d'Or: Dheepan, directed by Jacques Audiard Grand Prix: Son of Saul, directed by Laszlo Nemes Best Director: Hou Hsiao...

Jacques Audiard’s Dheepan has won the Palme d’Or at the 68th Cannes Film Festival (May 13-24).
Review: Dheepan
Critics had predicted that Todd Haynes’ Carol or Hou Hsiao-hsien’s The Assassin would take the top prize, while momentum appeared to shift to Laszlo Nemes’ Son Of Saul when it picked up the Fipresci prize. Even the bookies favoured a different title, pegging Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Lobster for the prestigious honour.
But while they each left the Lumiere Theatre with one prize apiece, it was Dheepan that claimed the top honour.
The drama centres on a Tamil freedom fighter (Antonythasan Jesuthasan, one of three non-professional Tamil leads) who, near the end of the Sri Lankan Civil War, flees to Europe with a makeshift family hoping to claim asylum...

The 68th Cannes Film Festival has wound down after 12 days of premieres, screenings and controversies about shoe policies, and all that was left was the award ceremony to wrap things up. Winners this year included Jacques Audiard’s Dheepan, which took the Palme d’Or and Rooney Mara for Todd Haynes’ Carol. Audiard winning seems something of a controversial choice, since, while it was admired, it hasn’t been as praised as the likes of Son Of Saul or Carol. Still, the other films got their due alongside quirky romantic drama The Lobster and Hou Hsiao-hsien’s impressive martial arts epic The Assassin. The jury for the main competition this year included Joel and Ethan Coen, Guillermo del Toro, Sienna Miller, Sophie Marceau, Jake Gyllenhaal, Rossy de Palma, Rokia Traoré and Xavier Dolan. Cannes is a fest littered with films and press conferences, so it’s perhaps no surprise that even the formal introduction to the jury becomes one of the hottest events of the day, with journos lining up well in advance to get a spot. The makeup of the jury is usually a fascinating and diverse group drawn from the world of cinema, and this year’s group seems particularly boisterous.
For North American audiences there are some faces not quite as familiar (such as Malian singer/poet Rokia Traoré, the Spanish Actress Rossy de Palma best known for her work with Pedro Almodovar), but the rest have had more out-of-the-fest bubble success. Sophie Marceau was in Braveheart and the Bond flick The World is Not Enough, and recently has directed several projects. Sienna Miller has had a massive year, including her major role in the box office hit American Sniper.

Cannes Jury 2015 (clockwise from top): Sophie Marceau, the Coen Brothers, Sienna Miller, Xavier Dolan, Guillermo del Toro, Rossy de Palma, Jake Gyllenhaal and Rokia Traoré.
There may be a fraternal fall-out on the Cannes Film Festival jury this year with Joel Coen and Ethan Coen as presidents but with equal voting rights. The two directors, screenwriters and producers do not always speak with the same voice.
Their cohorts in the task of selecting the prize-winners from the films in competition have just been announced and include four women and five men, among them actors Sophie Marceau, Jake Gyllenhaal, Sienna Miller, and Rossy de Palma.
The jury is spread between Canada, Spain, the United States, France, Mali, Mexico and the United Kingdom.
The prize jamboree culminating in the award of the Festival’s top prize, the Palme d’or, will be announced on stage during the Festival Closing Ceremony on Sunday 24 May.

We've long since known that the Cannes jury would be headlined by Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, better known as The Coen Bros, the world's most famous sibling auteurs (though not the only of course: see also the Wachowski siblings, the Dardenne Bros, and more). We now know who'll be joining their jury and therefore deciding those incredibly prestigious prizes like the Palme D'Or, the Grand Jury Prize, Best Director, Best Actress and more.
As usual the jury is a mix of directors from multiple countries, one non-actor/non-director, and a beautiful actress or, um, three. In fact the jury is almost half women this year. The jury is, from top left:
Joel & Ethan Coen (Us), filmmakers
How many masterpieces would you say they're up to now? Rossy de Palma (Spain), actress
You know and love this Picasso-assymetrical godess from Almodóvar's oeuvre Guillermo del Toro (Mexico), writer/director
Of Pan's Labyrinth & Hellboy fame.
