Lily Gladstone has impressed the global audience with her iconic portrayal in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. Her role of Mollie Burkhart is based on a real-life Osage woman, whose family members lost their lives over oil reserves rights in the oil-rich Oklahoma region.

Martin Scorsese is regarded as one of the finest filmmakers of the New Hollywood era, with five of his movies being included in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. Scorsese’s movies are described as culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant, which, back in the 1970s and 1980s, had an Italian-American influence and an upbringing in New York.
Filmmakers’s trademarks include extensive use of slow motion and freeze frames, graphic depictions of extreme violence, and liberal use of profanity. Scorsese, with his years of experience, garnered attention after he commented about how he does not consider Marvel movies to be cinema. But a screenwriter who has closely worked with the filmmaker on various projects disagrees with him.

It was a rough Oscar night for Martin Scorsese fans: despite "Killers of the Flower Moon" being nominated for 10 Academy Awards this year, it somehow managed to lose every single one of them. Even "Best Actress," which many assumed would be a shoo-in for Lily Gladstone, instead went to Emma Stone for her performance in "Poor Things." Meanwhile, most of the categories "Killers of the Flower Moon" competed in went to "Oppenheimer," which dominated nearly the whole night.
Emma Stone's performance is excellent, but Lily Gladstone's is like no other. Performances of conspicuous effort always win over quieter ones.

In a strange way, the sheer number of nominations makes the loss sting even more. What are the odds of losing in all 10 categories? When was the last time a movie was nominated so much and won so little? The answer is 2019's "The Irishman," also directed by Scorsese,...

Lily Gladstone made history on Saturday night, being named the winner in the outstanding performance by a female actor in a leading role category at Saturday’s SAG Awards in Los Angeles.
She is the first Indigenous performer to win a SAG Award in that category. She began her acceptance speech with a brief intro in her native Blackfoot language.
Gladstone was the breakout star from Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. She portrayed Osage woman Mollie Kyle, the wife of Ernest Burkhart (played by Leonardo DiCaprio). The film tells the story of the Osage murders at the hands of crime boss William Hale (portrayed by Robert De Niro).
“My friends, fellow actors, I feel the good in what you have done — what you do,” Gladstone followed in English in her acceptance. “This has been a hard year for all of us. Those in this room, those not in this room,...

In her acceptance speech as the first Native American woman to win a Screen Actors Guild Award in the lead actress motion picture category, Lily Gladstone thanked actors for continuing to “speak up” both in their performances and out in public, particularly during last year’s SAG-AFTRA strike.
“This has been a hard year for all of us. Those in this room, those not in this room, I’m so proud we have gotten here in solidarity with the other unions,” she said.
Gladstone won her SAG Award for her performance as Mollie Kyle in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.” The film follows Mollie as she gets married to white settler Ernest Burkhart, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, only for Ernest to betray her as she is poisoned and her family is killed off one-by-one to take control of their oil-rich land.

Producer Daniel Lupi had worked for years with the likes of Paul Thomas Anderson and Steven Spielberg, but until Killers of the Flower Moon, he had never collaborated with Martin Scorsese. So when he got the call to come on board, it was a no-brainer. “How could you say no to Martin Scorsese?” he says. “He’s Martin Scorsese. Paul Thomas Anderson would probably say the same thing. Some of the shots in Boogie Nights, you could argue, were inspired by Goodfellas.”
Lupi came on board after the script for the adaptation of David Grann’s nonfiction book had already been rewritten to focus on the relationship between Lily Gladstone’s Mollie, an Osage woman, and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Ernest Burkhart amid the genocide that Ernest participated in which targeted Mollie’s family. With a fresh Leading Actress Oscar nomination for the role of Mollie Kyle in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Lily Gladstone is next set to enter sci-fi territory with upcoming movie The Memory Police—a move that will also reunite her with Scorsese, set to executive produce.
“It’s on an unnamed island at an unnamed place, unnamed time,” Gladstone said of the new film, during a Q&a following a Killers of the Flower Moon screening in LA on Sunday. “So it takes place nowhere and therefore everywhere.”
The Memory Police will be directed by Reed Morano, with a script from Charlie Kaufman, adapted from the Yōko Ogawa novel of the same name.
“The adaptation is done by Charlie Kaufman,” Gladstone continued, “so it’s labeled as a sci-fi, but in the way that [Kaufman’s previous films] Eternal Sunshine [of the Spotless Mind] or Synecdoche [New York] was a sci-fi. It...

“Killers of the Flower Moon” star Lily Gladstone embraces her monumental responsibility as an Oscar nominee, utilizing her platform to advocate for the Indigenous community and hoping to pave the way for more actors like herself.
During a panel conversation at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival’s Virtuosos Awards, Gladstone — of Siksikaitsitapi and Niimiipuu heritage — addressed the harmful depictions and references to Indians in media, notably mentioning the Kansas City Chiefs the day before their Super Bowl win.
“Honestly, you could hold both teams accountable,” Gladstone tells Variety. “The 49ers are based on the California Gold Rush, which was an incredibly brutal time for California Indians. And then the Chiefs. There are many ways that you could interpret the name ‘chief.’ It’s not just the name that bothers me. It’s hearing that damn Tomahawk chop. When Martin Scorsese strikes up a relationship with his cinematographer, the collaboration tends to last for more than one film. Throughout his legendary career, Scorsese has worked repeatedly with such top names in the art of cinematography as Michael Chapman, Michael Ballhaus, Robert Richardson, and now Rodrigo Prieto. The acclaimed cinematographer, who was an Oscar nominee for “Brokeback Mountain,” has been at Scorsese’s side for the last four of the master filmmaker’s projects. During that run, Prieto has received three Oscar nominations for his artistry.
“It is crazy to imagine that I could even one day in my career say, ‘Yeah, it’s my third nomination with Martin Scorsese for an Oscar.’ What are you talking about?” Prieto, who was nominated this year for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. “It’s thrilling and I feel very privileged to be in this position.

On the morning of the 2024 Oscar nominations, Scott George was getting ready to go to work. “I had a meeting about two hours away that I was going to try to make, and so I was heading out the door,” George tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. But at the urging of his wife, George stuck around his Oklahoma home long enough to see his name listed among the Best Song nominees at the 2024 Oscars for the original track “Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)” from “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

Editor’s note: This interview was originally published on December 5, 2023 as part of our 2023 IndieWire Honors ceremony package, which celebrated 11 filmmakers, creators, and actors for their achievements in creative independence. This interview has been lightly updated to reflect Lily Gladstone’s recent Best Actress nomination.
Lily Gladstone thrives on the unexpected. For instance, she’ll happily answer the usual questions — like, oh, what was it like working with iconic Hollywood actors like Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro on Martin Scorsese’s lauded “Killers of the Flower Moon”? — but she’ll really light up when you ask her something a little different. More like, what was it like working with so many fellow Native and Indigenous talents on that same film?

Given the strong slate of this year’s Oscar nominees, the pre-Academy Awards season has been devoid of the intrigues and mud-slinging of previous epochs. Oops! – could a new outbreak of Barbie-phobia break the harmony and bring naysayers out of the shadows?
I already hear a few negative murmurs: Not only is Barbie suddenly “a bad movie,” but Leonardo DiCaprio should have played the FBI agent in Killers of the Flower Moon, as his director originally planned. And Oppenheimer was a brilliant movie but arguably could have focused on a different physicist.
While most of us are disposed to admire the Oscar Best Picture nominees, and may even vote accordingly, this is the moment when we always hear from grumpy film nerds. They led the wave of indignation in 1982 when Et was critiqued for lacking the cultural depth of Gandhi. Et made us smile, not yawn, it was later pointed out,...

Following his show-stopping performance as Ernest Burkhart for Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Leonardo DiCaprio is teaming up with Paul Thomas Anderson for the filmmaker’s next mysterious feature. Cameras took snaps of DiCaprio in Eureka, California, where Anderson’s latest project is in production. DiCaprio looks rough in the unofficial images in a flannel long coat, black toque, and gray t-shirt. He seems positively exhausted while sporting a handlebar mustache, lending credence to the actor’s ability to transform for different roles.
Cameras on Anderson’s untitled film start rolling early this year in California, with the filmmaker directing, writing the script, and producing alongside Sara Murphy. Details about the plot remain a mystery. However, Deadline‘s exclusive report says the project includes a contemporary setting and is the “most commercial” endeavor Anderson has put their hands on. When the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian hosted Apple Original Films’ Killers of the Flower Moon for an event on Friday, director Martin Scorsese and star Lily Gladstone talked extensively about the development and production of the Oscar-nominated epic.
But the multiple Oscar nominated film also is in line with so much of what the Smithsonian is trying to do, according to the Smithsonian’s secretary, Lonnie Bunch, and comes at a time when there is so much debate over the teaching of unvarnished chapters of the American past.

As the 96th annual Academy Award nominations were revealed on Tuesday morning, Martin Scorsese was in New York, the city that shaped his gutsy and gritty style of filmmaking. His latest epic, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” picked up 10 Oscar nominations, although lead actor Leonardo DiCaprio was snubbed. With his director nod, Scorsese has been recognized 10 times in the category, making him the most nominated living filmmaker, edging out Steven Spielberg. But as he achieved that feat, his thoughts returned to old friends from “the neighborhood,” those rough-and-tumble streets of Little Italy where he came of age.
“The ones I knew are mostly gone, along with the neighborhood itself,” Scorsese says. “But they’re always with me, wherever I go. Maybe they’re joking around with me and giving me a hard time, but they’re proud.”

THR reports that Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) is attached to star in The Memory Police, an adaptation of the acclaimed science fiction novel by Yoko Ogawa.
The Memory Police takes “place on an unnamed island off an unnamed coast where a majority of the island’s residents are subject to collective amnesia. They endure a process of forgetting things, including objects, people and daily rituals, with the amnesia enforced by an organization called The Memory Police. Paul Giamatti turned the tables on Leonardo DiCaprio when Oscar nominations were announced, with Giamatti nominated for Best Actor for “The Holdovers” while DiCaprio was snubbed for “Killers of the Flower Moon.” But 19 years ago it was the other way around.
SEETop 20 Oscar snubs of performers: Margot Robbie, Leonardo DiCaprio, Willem Dafoe …
In 2004 the Oscar lineup for Best Actor consisted of Don Cheadle (“Hotel Rwanda”), Johnny Depp (“Finding Neverland”), DiCaprio (“The Aviator”), Clint Eastwood (“Million Dollar Baby”), and the eventual winner Jamie Foxx (“Ray”). Someone who was notably absent that year was Giamatti for “Sideways.”
Prior to the nominations announcement DiCaprio was recognized at every major precursor for his performance as Howard Hughes, a real-life filmmaker, pilot and businessman, in Martin Scorsese‘s “The Aviator.” Among those plaudits, he won the Golden Globe for Best Film Drama Actor. The movie itself received 13 Oscar noms overall, including DiCaprio’s Best Actor bid.

Leonardo DiCaprio was snubbed for his role in Killers of the Flower Moon at the 2024 Oscars.
The actor did not receive a nod for his portrayal of Ernest Burkhart in Martin Scorsese’s Apple Original Film, which received 10 nominations, including best director for Martin Scorsese, best actress for Lily Gladstone and best picture, among others.
This year’s acting noms at the Academy Awards were Bradley Cooper (Maestro), Colman Domingo (Rustin) Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers), Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) and Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction). Scorsese, who became the most nominated living director, received nods alongside Justine Triet (Anatomy of a Fall), Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer), Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things) and Jonathan Glazer (The Zone of Interest).
Killers of the Flower Moon has received more than 300 nominations this awards season, per IMDb, so far collecting 95 of those trophies at awards shows like the Golden Globes, National Board of Review Awards and New York Film Critics Circle Awards.

That means an impressive 21 nominations for Barbenheimer, the one-two summer punch that had a collective gross of almost $2.4 billion at the global box office, and did as much to restore moviegoing as Tom Cruise and Top Gun: Maverick did the previous year as the business struggled to rebound from the pandemic. Oppenheimer and Barbie got to fully promote their films right before the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that hindered many of the other films that bowed in the fall because guild members were forbidden from stumping for their films.

“Oppenheimer” – 13 nominations
Universal Pictures’ “Oppenheimer” stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, aka the father of the atomic bomb. It made a whopping $952 million worldwide, cementing its status as one of the most lucrative biopics in box office history. Filmmaker Christopher Nolan has long been considered “overdue” for an Oscar win after previously earning bids for writing “Memento” (2001), writing and producing “Inception...

Adding improv to a film is a bit like adding truffle to a recipe: a little goes a long way. And when you're making a movie with a legendary director like Martin Scorsese, the script likely doesn't need any creative seasoning at all. Leonardo DiCaprio found this out on the set of "Killers of the Flower Moon," in which he plays brainless criminal Ernest Burkhart.
Speaking to the Wall Street Journal profile, Scorsese recalled that he found himself side-eyeing DiCaprio's attempts to improve upon the great script from himself and co-writer Eric Roth more than once on set. "Every now and then, Bob and I would look at each other and roll our eyes a little bit," the filmmaker said, referencing DiCaprio's co-star Robert De Niro. "And we'd tell [DiCaprio], 'You don't need that dialogue.'"

Silence greets Ernest Burkhart when he enters a meeting with the business leaders of Osage County, Oklahoma. This late into Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Ernest (Leonardo DiCaprio) has proven to be easily pliable, to the point that his uncle William “King” Hale (Robert De Niro) can convince him to poison his beloved wife Mollie (Lily Gladstone). But he can be pushed only so far. If the leaders do not want Ernest to testify against his uncle, they must be subtle.
Thus the quiet when Ernest enters the room, which Scorsese and his cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto shoot like a baroque painting. The low mumble of their conversation fades as each withered white face turns from the shadows to face Ernest, who nods in a suggestion of understanding.

Killers of the Flower Moon sees director Martin Scorsese tell the story of a series of murders that plagued the Osage Nation in the 1920s. Based on the David Gran book of the same name, Killers of the Flower Moon is more than just one of the best movies of 2023. It’s a sweeping epic about the United States’ history of corruption that also manages to tell the story of a truly doomed “romance” while shining a light on events that had previously either been ignored or widely misrepresented.
Yet despite the movie’s good intentions and nearly three and a half hour runtime, it doesn’t quite capture everything you need to know about these sobering historic events. For that matter, Scorsese’s decision to modify its source material’s structure by focusing more on the relationship between Mollie and Ernest Burkart and revealing the identity of the conspirators...

Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio have worked closely together for nearly a quarter of a century starting with “Gangs of New York” and now, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” their sixth feature film together. DiCaprio stars in the film as Ernest Burkhart, who served as a hitman for his uncle (Robert De Niro) while being involved in the Osage murders in 1920s Oklahoma. At the National Board of Review Gala in New York City on January 11, Scorsese accepted the awards for Best Picture and Best Director, while Lily Gladstone also won Best Actress for her portrayal of Mollie Burkhart.

Exclusive: Since Jack Dawson made him a top global star in Titanic, Leonardo DiCaprio has largely avoided the straight hero route in favor of shaded, conflicted characters in films from The Revenant to The Departed, The Aviator, Gangs of New York, The Wolf Of Wall Street, Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood, and others. But he’d never gone to the degree he did on Killers of the Flower Moon. The first version of the film had almost everything going for it: the David Grann bestseller bought for a shocking $5 million by Imperative Entertainment, a script Eric Roth wrote, and the first teaming of Martin Scorsese, DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, the latter going mano a mano for the first time since This Boy’s Life established a teenaged DiCaprio as the young actor to watch.

Few filmmakers in the annals of cinema have earned the right to take a bow like Martin Scorsese. For nearly 60 years, the maverick storyteller has pushed the limits of his art form and found new ways to leave an indelible mark on the audiences who still show up. So for more than a handful of critics who clapped at my screening when the maestro materialized at the end of Killers of the Flower Moon, it must have seemed like a well-earned mic drop; a chance for Scorsese to take visible ownership of a passion project he’s been shepherding to the screen for the better part of a decade.
Yet my personal reaction to the moment was initial bafflement and a curious melancholy. Staring directly into the camera, the director of Raging Bull and Goodfellas, Taxi Driver and Gangs of New York,...

Lily Gladstone is defending her Reservation Dogs co-star Devery Jacobs’ right to her opinion about Killers of the Flower Moon, Martin Scorsese’s take on the Osage murders.
The Golden Globe winner briefly addressed the Echo star’s comments about the film, in which Jacobs described the experience of watching it as “hellfire.” The film chronicles the “reign of terror,” a string of unsolved murders by white Americans as part of a plot to steal the wealth of the Osage tribe, which retained the mineral rights, including oil leases, on their reservation.
This was carried out in part by white men marrying women of the tribe and becoming guardians of their Osage partner’s estate. In the film, Gladstone plays Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman who is targeted alongside her family by her husband, Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio), for their oil headrights on their Oklahoma reservation.

Director Martin Scorsese has long been known for his rigorous dedication to authenticity, and “Killers of the Flower Moon” is quite possibly his densest film yet in terms of journalistic detail. Working closely with Osage advisers who vetted every line of Scorsese and Eric Roth’s screenplay, researcher Marianne Bower compiled thousands of pages of research material and visual references that she made available to all of the department heads as resources to tell their tragic story. The result is one of the most fully realized historical epics ever put on screen, a film in which each gesture, fabric, prop, and camera movement builds to create an immersive emotional experience for the audience.
The demand for verisimilitude placed extreme demands on Scorsese’s collaborators, all of whom felt a deep sense of responsibility to the Osage people. “It was important to [Scorsese] that it be truthful and fair,” production designer Jack Fisk told IndieWire,...

Lily Gladstone just made history. Last night, the "Killers of the Flower Moon" star became the first Indigenous person to win a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama for her part in Martin Scorsese's epic drama, and it's hard not to get swept up in such an achievement. I write about movies for a living but I'll confess I'm mostly an agnostic when it comes to awards season. Often, the awards season hubbub can reduce films to sporting events, and I have no interest in that.
But if there's one person I'm rooting for this awards season, it's Gladstone. She hasn't been nominated for an Oscar just yet, but it seems very likely she's going to get a Best Actress nod for her work. And when and if she does, it seems just as likely she's going to take home the award. And she should — she...

Lily Gladstone made history at the Golden Globes by becoming the first Indigenous woman in the show’s 81-year history to win the Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama award for her transformative performance in Martin Scorsese drama Killers of the Flower Moon. The category was one of the most anticipated of the night and featured several powerhouse performances from the past year.
The film is based on the 2017 nonfiction book The Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by David Grann. The film depicts the serial murder of members of the oil-wealthy Osage Nation in Oklahoma during the 1920s, after they made massive discoveries of oil on their land. Gladstone, an actress known for indie films like Certain Women and Billions, plays the role of Mollie Burkhart. Mollie is an Osage woman who marries Ernest Burkhart, the nephew of a powerful local rancher.

Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-contender “Killers of the Flower Moon” (AppleTV+) went through many iterations on its way to the big screen. Scorsese and his co-writer, Oscar-winner Eric Roth (“Forrest Gump”), made several dramatic pivots on their way to a final script.
Even author David Grann, who wrote the 2017 non-fiction bestseller on which the book is based, when over half a decade he was obsessively researching the mysterious Osage killings in Oklahoma in the 1920s, had to start over when he discovered facts that changed his version of history. But as he dug into the Osage guardianship system in a vast archive warehouse in Fort Worth, Texas, he uncovered something different.

The Killer. How do you make a good movie in this country and be jumped on?Once, in 1967, in the opener for her Bonnie and Clyde review, Pauline Kael asked the opposite question: “How do you make a good movie in this country without being jumped on?” Now, times have changed. Nothing provokes us to jump and say, “Hold the torches! That’s the key! The way forward.”An automatic film like David Fincher’s new thriller, The Killer, comes and goes with the velocity of a Twitter news cycle: about six fervent days of talk. (The seventh and beyond? Fits and bursts of takes amid miles of silence.) Whether you think it’s good or bad, The Killer has not lingered in the popular consciousness. And I can’t imagine it lingering. It might have passed me by with the similarly fleeting presence of recent moving-image works like Richard Linklater...

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2023, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
Another year of films. Another year of depressingly hopeful favorites.
That’s not to say I didn’t love any comedies. The ones I did just had a tendency to punch you in the gut somewhere along the line. It’s a truth that probably says more about me than I could ever articulate on my own. Grief simply resonates—especially when it can hit hard while still allowing the affected character on-screen to smile in the face of it.
