We don’t step evenly into Sons. Over the stretch of a long, grim elevator ride––face-to-face with Eva (Sidse Babett Knudsen), a middle-aged woman working as a guard in the Danish prison system––we descend into it. The initial reveal is light-hearted, the opposite direction one might expect from a prison thriller. But only briefly. Like its Scandinavian neighbors, Denmark has been renowned for its relatively humane approach to mass incarceration: low rates of recidivism, fewer instances of violence, and anti-punitive philosophies. But “relatively” and “has been” are the key words here.
The Danish Prisons and Probation Service is still a modern, westernized prison-industrial complex. And one in sharp decline. Where it once swam upstream alongside its Nordic siblings in the name of ethics, it’s now accused of taking cues from more penal, profit-bent countries such as the US. In 2019, Bo Yde Sørensen, Head of the Danish Prison Federation,...

Movie buffs may recognize the name Gustav Möller because his debut feature, “The Guilty,” played Sundance, then went on to inspire an English-language remake starring Jake Gyllenhaal. The film famously took place on one end of an emergency services line, as an overcommitted police officer tried to rescue a distressed caller whose crisis wasn’t nearly as straightforward as it sounded. An impressive example of creativity within constraints, “The Guilty” invited audiences to make an action movie in their heads while giving them little more than the tense face of a single character to look at for most of its running time.
With “Sons,” Möller has made a more conventional film, but still does most of his storytelling off-screen. His protagonist is a Danish corrections officer named Eva Hansen. She’s half the size of most of the male prisoners on her ward, but can obviously hold her own, swelling...

"We never enter a prisoner's cell alone!" Cinetic has unveiled a initial festival promo trailer for a new Danish dramatic thriller titled Sons, the latest from Danish filmmaker Gustav Möller. This is his second feature following the acclaimed film The Guilty, that film set entirely in a 9-1-1 dispatcher's office which first premiered at Sundance 2018 (and was remade into the film with Jake Gyllenhaal). Sons is premiering at the 2024 Berlin Film Festival in the Main Competition section, which means it might be one to watch for. Sons stars Sidse Babett Knudsen as an Idealistic prison officer Eva Hansen, who faces the dilemma of her life when a young man she knows from before is transferred to her prison. Also starring Sebastian Bull, Dar Salim, Marina Bouras, and Olaf Johannessen. Looks crazy intense! Obviously the mystery is about her connection to this person (is it her son?) and what's going on with him & her.

Just four years after the movie hit theaters, Netflix has turned Guy Ritchie's "The Gentlemen" into a TV show. The above teaser trailer for the series offers proof of that, introducing a drug empire, a cast of criminals, and some vintage Ritchie shenanigans.
The teaser admittedly doesn't dive too deeply into the story, but it does do a great job of capturing the vibe. It's all set to the tune of "Time of the Season" by The Zombies, with some welcome narration by Giancarlo Esposito, of "Breaking Bad" and "The Boys" fame. Esposito is just one part of a pretty well-stacked ensemble led by Theo James ("The White Lotus"). Blood, boxing, and quips, this has all of the hallmarks of a classic Guy Ritchie production. It certainly has a similar feeling to the 2020 movie, but it also feels designed to satisfy "Snatch" fans. The official synopsis for the show...

As we get ready to close out 2023, it’s time to look back at the films that entertained us and left a lasting impression. It was the year of Barbie vs. Oppenheimer (affectionately referred to as “Barbenheimer”) battling for the summer box office, and The Flash with Michael Keaton returning as the Caped Crusader in a film that fell short of reviving the DC movie franchise. A classic coming-of-age story from the 1970s finally found its way to the screen, and 2023 also served up yet another delightful adaptation of an Agatha Christie novel.
The following films represent my personal favorites of 2023. These films, from a wide range of genres, mesmerized me and reminded audiences of the magic of movies.

Hollywood action films set in the Middle East cover a considerable portion of the present action genre. America’s thirst for glory has no bounds, and the way it uses such movies as a tool of hegemony is rather lucid if one is looking for it. Some of you might be wondering where I’m headed with this, but all I’m saying is that in all these movies, America becomes a beacon of hope, valor, sacrifice, and “worth” (pun intended if you remember how Captain America lifted Thor’s hammer in Avengers: Endgame). Anyway, coming back to the topic, here are five movies like Kandahar that you can watch. Although there are many, the list I’ve made is based on the first few names that came to mind that I’ve seen and liked. To make the list shorter, all these movies are based in the Middle East...

As on-screen text reads, the U.S. responded to 9/11 by deploying troops to Afghanistan. As the number of troops rose across the next decade, the U.S. military employed Afghan interpreters under an agreement that they would be eligible for Special Immigration Visas and relocation to America. That work is seen as the film flashes to 2018, when a routine check ends with a vehicle explosion and lives lost.
Sergeant John Kinley (Jake Gyllenhaal) leads a unit whose mission is to locate Taliban firearms and munitions, which includes a replacement interpreter in the form of Ahmed (Dar Salim). While considerably disliked, the interpreter proves himself a valuable member as he deduces an ambush lurking ahead of the unit.

Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant is not the kind of movie you’d expect from a director of black comedy, but instead, a deeper look into humans and their psyche against the backdrop of a war-torn country. Sergeant John Kinley, the leader of a military outfit stationed in Afghanistan in 2018. Ahmed Abdullah (Dar Salim) is employed by Kinley as the official interpreter for the military team, but when things turn hairy, Kinley and Ahmed end up forming a bond that goes far beyond any monetary agreements. Today we look at Ahmed Abdullah and how his humanity drove him to such immense lengths to save a fellow human being.

Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant is a film directed by Guy Ritchie starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Dar Salim.
A film that bears the name of the director in the title, which leads us to the approach of the film as a challenge: to escape from the usual tone of lowlife comedy to enter fully into an epic war adventure.
Does it succeed or does it lack epicity?
Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant Movie Review
Guy Ritchie is a guy who likes to be seen. The “invisible director” thing doesn’t go with him, and he likes to show his style in each of his works. Here we won’t find his iconic Jason Statham, but we have Jake Gyllenhaal in a war movie that has no time for laughs and in which, lacking in humor, everything takes a somber aura, a strange mix with a documentary undertone (sometimes) with traces...

Firstly, his new film with Jake Gyllenhaal, The Covenant, recently hit theaters, and he is currently working on The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which features his Man from U.N.C.L.E. star, Henry Cavill, and Eiza Gonzalez. Deadline now reports that Ritchie will be returning to his signature humor for an untitled action film in which he will also be reuniting with his recent collaborators — Gyllenhaal, Cavill, and Gonzalez.
The Cannes market will proceed with buyers being introduced to proposed projects despite the current unrest of the writers’ strike. Ritchie’s new film has not officially revealed its plot or title. However, it is being said that the new action movie will be a return to form for the British director. The film is reportedly revolving around two extraction specialists who must plan an escape path for a high-level female negotiator.

A week after Renfield and The Pope’s Exorcist failed to open in double digits, we have Evil Dead Rise surpassing expectations with a $23.5 million opening weekend. Pretty solid when you consider the original 1981 classic made just $2.8 million, 1987’s Evil Dead II made $5.9 million, 1992’s classic Army of Darkness pulled in $11.5 million while 2013’s re-imagining saw the cult series soar to new heights by opening with $25.7 million on its way to a $97.5 million worldwide total. With pretty solid reviews, including a 9/10 from our own Jessica Dwyer and an 81% audience score (which is actually pretty solid for a horror film), this gore fest has all the makings for a decent run at the box office, especially when you consider the budget for the film was kept at a modest $19 million as it was originally meant to drop directly onto HBO Max.

There looks to be no end in sight to the massive run Universal’s animated “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” has been having.
This past weekend, it won its third weekend at the box office in a row, while also crossing $400 million. It made another $58.2 million (down 37%) over the weekend, potentially helped by the fact that the song “Peaches,” performed by Jack Black as the evil King Koopa Bowser, landed on the Billboard Hot 100 – a first for Black! – with 15 million streams on Spotify. That pushed the movie’s domestic total to $434.3 million, which is better than all but two movies released in 2022. (It will pass last year’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” in the next day or so.)
“Super Mario Bros.” made another $70.7 million overseas this weekend, which brings its international total to $437.5 million with an $871.8 million global total.

Klaatu ... barada ... nikto! Evil returns to the box office this weekend in the form of "Evil Dead Rise," a bloody new installment from writer/director Lee Cronin that takes the Necronomicon out of the woods and into a high-rise apartment building in Los Angeles. Last week saw two new horror movies take on the titan that is "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," with the Russell Crowe-led "The Pope's Exorcist" taking a distant second place, and comedy-horror "Renfield" debuting at No. 4.
"Evil Dead Rise" couldn't topple the Nintendo juggernaut either; "Super Mario Bros." is set to safely hold on to the box office top spot in its fourth weekend with an estimated $58 million added to its domestic total, plus another $65 million from overseas markets (per The Hollywood Reporter). That will bring its total to $866 million worldwide, making the billion dollar milestone an inevitability at this point.
Nonetheless, "Evil Dead Rise" has landed at No.

The box office continues to heat up as the summer season approaches.
Illumination and Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie remains a monster at the multiplex as it crosses the $400 million mark domestically and $866.1 million globally. It will easily win the weekend race in North America with a projected haul of $58 million for a domestic cume of $434.1 million through Sunday. Overseas, it’s on course to earn another $65 million for a foreign total of $432 million.
The movie adaptation of the Nintendo video game is playing more like an all-audience blockbuster than an animated tentpole thanks to its multi-generational appeal and will become the first movie of 2023 to join the billion-dollar club.
Super Mario continues to shatter records. At $58 million, the pic would supplant Jurassic World ($46.4 million) to rank as Universal’s biggest third weekend in history. It would be the seventh-biggest third weekend among any film at the domestic...

Much to the surprise of no one, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is coming in well ahead of the competition in its third week of release with what is, as of right now, projected to be a $56 million weekend. I stipulate that that number is “as of right now” because for the last two weeks Super Mario Bros has blown past projections. The international box office for the film is currently at at $725.7 million, putting it over the worldwide totals of Sonic The Hedgehog and Sonic The Hedgehog 2… combined (the two films accumulated $725.1 million total.) With no competition at the box office until Guardians of the Galaxy vol 3 hits on May 5, you can expect Mario to dominate the charts for another two weeks.
Second place looks to be the newest entry in the iconic horror franchise Evil Dead Rise with what is projected to be around $22 million after grabbing $2.5 million on Thursday.

Despite a solid 25 years in the business and a slew of hits to his name, it still feels somewhat premature for Guy Ritchie to be putting his name in the title of his latest film. Officially billed as Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant, ostensibly to avoid confusion with a 2006 sexy witches movie, it’s all a touch too easy to make fun of. Ritchie has never been a director who commands the respect of critics with his bloke-friendly gangster fare proving extremely influential—particularly Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) and Snatch (2000)—if not necessarily acclaimed. Yet his impact is undeniable, and he’s been a consistently excellent director of genre fare with a specific vision, even as the face of blockbuster cinema has remodelled itself in the franchise era.
Over the past few years, Ritchie ventured into more traditional Hollywood fare, including the unavoidable realm of Disney live-action remakes via 2019’s Aladdin.
