Exclusive: NBC has increased the order of new drama series The Irrational by one episode. Originally picked up for 10 episodes, the series starring Jesse L. Martin will now produce 11 episodes in its first season. Meanwhile, Season 2 of NBC’s comedy series Lopez v. Lopez will consist of 10 episodes, down from the previously ordered 13.
The adjustments come as NBC is fine-tuning its scheduling plans for midseason. The network will likely reveal its midseason premiere dates next week after CBS and ABC announced theirs over the last few days.
The Irrational had filmed 7 episodes when the strike suspended production. The drama is scheduled to resume production next week in Vancouver. It was initially supposed to shoot the three remaining episodes, now that number has gone up to four.
The order increase follows a solid debut for both of NBC’s new drama series this fall, The Irrational and Found. The latter had wrapped production before the strike,...

The 1963 March on Washington did not merely come together on its own via a whim, a wish, and good will. It took years of strategizing, planning, building coalitions, dodging bureaucratic obstacles and opponents both within and outside the burgeoning Civil Rights Movement. Students and veteran activists worked phone lines, sweated over the details (how many latrines do we need? how many can we get?), and sought out allies of all stripes from across the country. What happened on that hot day in the District of Columbia on August 28th was...

George C. Wolfe is one of the great storytellers of the stage and screen, which is why it was only fitting that the writer and director of theatrical and film productions was at last month’s Scad Savannah Film Festival to collect its Storyteller Award. Following a screening of his latest motion picture, Rustin — which tells the story of Bayard Rustin, the gay civil rights activist who organized the 1963 March on Washington, and is now streaming on Netflix — Wolfe joined yours truly in the Lucas Theatre to record an episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast.
Wolfe, 69, is known as a playwright for writing 1986’s The Colored Museum and co-writing 1992’s Jelly’s Last Jam. He also gained recognition as a theater director for the original Broadway productions of Angels in America: Millennium Approaches and Angels in America: Perestroika and a host of Broadway musicals, like 1996’s Bring in ’da Noise,...

March on Washington organizer Bayard Rustin, a Black and gay civil rights advocate who died in 1987 after decades of fighting for peace, nonviolence, and racial equality in the workplace, gets a rousing spotlight in playwright-turned-filmmaker George C. Wolfe’s “Rustin.” The Netflix drama, in theaters now and streaming on the platform November 17, stars Colman Domingo in the title role, and it’s one of this year’s awards contenders to watch. Barack and Michelle Obama back the film through their Higher Ground productions, making an appearance this past weekend to support the biopic. Julian Breece and Dustin Lance Black co-write the screenplay, which centers on Rustin’s 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
Recently, none other than Oscar-winning “Moonlight” director Barry Jenkins moderated a Q&a with Wolfe and Breece at Ross House in Los Angeles on November 6. “I watched the movie, and when it ended, I sat up...

How ‘Rustin’ and Native Son Teamed to Reclaim the Civil Rights Activist’s History as a Rallying Call
A handful of hours before George C. Wolfe’s Rustin would make its New York premiere as NewFest’s opening night selection on Oct. 12, more than 100 Black queer members of the Native Son collective gathered in The Chelsea Hotel’s Lobby Bar, drinks in hand and under a golden aura of light, dipping in and out of excited conversation.
“It’s really emotional for me,” Native Son founder Emil Wilbekin told The Hollywood Reporter. “Coming into this room and seeing all these beautiful Black queer men — who are legends, icons, mentors, new in their careers — you can feel the joy and love because we don’t have spaces like this.”
Coordinated in conjunction with Netflix, the Rustin film team and Native Son — a collective of Black gay and queer men focused on elevating the voices, visibility and lived experiences of their community — the gathering counted Rustin producer Bruce Cohen and...

How does one create a film festival during an actors strike? Middleburg Film Festival executive director Susan Koch explains she’s approached programming the Virginia fest in the same manner as she has always done. “We looked for the strongest films and a wide range of films that represent diverse voices and ones we feel will expand our view of the world,” she tells Variety.
Now in its 11th year, the festival continues to be a carefully curated weekend of films and conversations, including many of the year’s buzziest titles. “Rustin,” a Netflix biopic of civil rights activist Bayard Rustin that was directed by George C. Wolfe, will open the four-day fest. Wolfe will receive the festival’s Impact Award for his work in bringing the impactful civil and LGBTQ rights story to the screen. Searchlight’s “Poor Things” and A24’s “Priscilla” are also among films screening from Oct.

Colman Domingo is transforming into civil rights leader Bayard Rustin for a Netflix period piece biopic.
The “Euphoria” and “The Color Purple” Emmy winner portrays the “architect of 1963’s momentous March on Washington” during the 60th anniversary of the march. DGA Award and five-time Tony Award winner George C. Wolfe directs the eponymously titled “Rustin.”
The official synopsis for the Netflix film reads: Alongside giants like the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., Adam Clayton Powell Jr., and Ella Baker, Bayard Rustin dared to imagine a different world and inspired a movement in a march toward freedom. He challenged authority and never apologized for who he was, what he believed, or who he desired. And he did not back down. He made history, and in turn, he was forgotten.
Chris Rock, Glynn Turman, Aml Ameen, Gus Halper, Cch Pounder, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Johnny Ramey, Michael Potts, Jeffrey Wright, and Audra McDonald...

Netflix this morning dropped the full-length trailer for its civil rights-themed biopic “Rustin,” executive produced by Barack and Michelle Obama through their Higher Ground production company and starring Emmy winner Colman Domingo in the lead. It tells the story of the unheralded (until now) movement leader Bayard Rustin (Domingo), the architect of the historic 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom and a close friend of Martin Luther King Jr. The trailer abundantly features Domingo of course but also snippets of most members of the all-star cast, which includes Chris Rock, Glynn Turman, Aml Ameen, Gus Halper, Cch Pounder, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Johnny Ramey, Michael Potts, Jeffrey Wright and Audra McDonald. Watch the trailer above.

Rudy Giuliani has been dumped by yet another attorney.
On Wednesday morning, Brian Tevis filed a motion to the Fulton County Superior Court to withdraw as counsel for the former mayor of New York City who is now an indicted co-defendant in Georgia’s election interference case against Donald Trump.
Tevis had hinted shortly after Giuliani’s Georgia arraignment in August that he was unsure if he would continue to defend Giuliani throughout the entirety of his trial. In an interview with CNN, host Kaitlan Collins grilled Tevis on questions regarding Giuliani’s finances,...

Kylie Jenner’s son’s name has finally been legally changed to Aire Webster.
After taking legal action back in March to make her baby boy’s name change official, a judge has ruled that the now 20-month-old’s name has been modified from his birth name, Wolf Jacques Webster.
On Friday, Jenner virtually attended the hearing, to which court documents obtained by People outline that the Kylie Cosmetics founder was sworn in and testified. However, Travis Scott — whom she shares Aire and five-year-old daughter Stormi with — did not attend.
