The stars of Kinds of Kindness are out in full force at the 77th Annual Cannes Film Festival to promote their black comedy anthology film directed by Poor Things’ Yorgos Lanthimos.
At the photocall on Saturday, Emma Stone, Hunter Schafer, and Margaret Qualley all looked stunning in matching black-and-white dresses—each with a distinct flair—perfect for the French Riviera setting.

Kinds of Kindness: A Triptych Fable
Kinds of Kindness tells three distinct but somewhat related stories, separated into three segments: “The Death of R.M.F.,” the first segment, centers on a man who tries to take control of his own life after severing ties with his influential boss; “R.M.F. is Flying,” the second segment, follows a man who becomes suspicious that...

When walking into a film like Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the problem with prequel stories cannot help but linger in the back of one’s mind: Can there be excitement in telling us a story we already know? Indiana Jones can’t die in Temple of Doom and Anakin Skywalker will grow up to become Darth Vader. It’s inevitable. Some prequels manage to navigate that hurdle by completely subverting our expectations (Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me), largely functioning as standalone experiences (X-Men: First Class), or by simply parodying their very concepts (Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp). No matter the solution, what we know remains a constant issue that needs to be accounted for.
In recent years, more prequel stories have strangely embraced that issue. Many modern movie prequels get made because we know almost everything about those stories, those characters, and that world. That...

Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Films may currently be in production on the first of the studio’s rebooted and reimagined superhero franchise pictures, but that doesn’t mean executives can’t make announcements about the second one.
“Supergirl: World of Tomorrow” will hit theaters (and IMAX) on June 26, 2026, as per reports. Milly Alcock, the 24-year-old Australian actress, will play Supergirl, also known as Kara Zor-El, also known as Kara Danvers, the cousin of Kal-El, the Last Son of Krypton, also known as Kal-El, also known as Clark Kent, also known as Superman. Kara Zor-El, by the way, should not be confused with Kara Zor-l, also known as Karen Starr, also known as Power Girl, who is also Superman’s cousin, but, like, from a different universe. It’s complicated. Alcock is best known for the part of Young Rhaenyra Targaryen in “House of the Dragon.”

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will star Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) in the title role, with the film set to be scripted by Ana Nogueira and based on the Tom King comic series of the same name. “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” is set to debut on June 26, 2026 in Imax, the second feature in the newly rebooted DC Universe to secure its place on the release calendar, following James Gunn’s “Superman.” The film stars Milly Alcock (“House of the Dragon”) as the titular Girl of Steel, with Craig Gillespie (“Cruella”) directing from a script by Ana Nogueira (“The Vampire Diaries”).
The project — adapted from a 2022 comic book series of the same title, by Tom King and Bilquis Evely — takes Supergirl away from Earth as she travels through the cosmos with her trusty canine, Krypto the Superdog, in order to escape a life stuck perpetually under the shadow of her cousin, Superman. She encounters an alien girl named Ruthye, who is bent on revenge for the death of her father, and recruits Supergirl to help her.

Cruella and Richard Jewell star Paul Walter Hauser is one of the most exciting additions to The Fantastic Four, but as we write this, there's still no word on who he's playing.
Mole Man is the most popular suggestion among comic book fans, though it's just as easy to imagine him voicing H.E.R.B.I.E., for example. Marvel's First Family has many allies and enemies on the page so Hauser could ultimately be portraying any number of characters in the upcoming reboot.
Talking to Screen Rant, Hauser broke his silence on joining The Fantastic Four and confirmed he's playing someone from the comics.
"[All] I can say is that I, in some iteration, am in the movie The Fantastic Four until I get fired or recast. So I can't say anything about the character I'm playing, but know that it is in the sort of lexicon and mythology of The Fantastic Four stories,...

Ryan Gosling is living his best life these days. Or certainly his funniest. After earning an Academy Award nomination purely based on his ability to persuasively turn “Kenergy” into a noun in last summer’s Barbie, he brought that pure, uncut Ken stuff to the Oscar stage. No, not by winning the prize, but by taking home the hearts and minds of the internet with an epic performance of “I’m Just Ken.”
In hindsight, the spectacle of it all might be viewed as a turning point in his career as audiences embrace the guy who seemed so stoic and tortured in the 2010s—with his understated leading roles in Drive, Blade Runner 2049, Blue Valentine, and First Man—as actually a great comedy talent. His next studio vehicle, The Fall Guy, is in theaters now, and we can vouch for it being a breezy, lighthearted entertainment given life by...

The fashionable and evil Cruella De Vil graces collectors with her presence thanks to a new Darkness Descends Series doll from Mattel. This may be the best the One Hundred and One Dalmatians character has ever looked since Glenn Close played her in 1996.
The doll, priced at $100, will be available for pre-order at 9 Am Pt on May 6.
The best part of this doll is the packaging. While Cruella may be glamorous in doll form, the back of her box showcases the villainess we know from the classic 1961 film.
Yes, they put that terrifying Medusa-like image of Cruella on the back of the collector’s box. Oh, if only the doll had an alternate head with that nightmare-inducing face.
“From Disney’s 1961 film ‘One Hundred and One Dalmatians,’ Cruella De Vil will stop at nothing to own the ultimate fur coat. This special collector doll celebrates Cruella’s transformation from miserable to maniacal,...

Say what you will about superhero fatigue in recent months, but there's no denying that James Gunn is assembling quite a list of talent for his new DC Universe. Even though he's right in the middle of filming for "Superman", that hasn't stopped him and co-ceo Peter Safran from looking to the future for another superhero movie coming down the pipeline. After news broke earlier this year that "House of the Dragon" star Millie Alcock would be suiting up as Superman's superpowered cousin, the upcoming "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" film now has its director. That's maybe not the order of hiring we'd usually expect to see, but welcome to franchise filmmaking, folks!

Emma Stone and Emma Thompson collaborated not too long ago for the hit Disney film Cruella. The pair famously played rival fashion designers, with Stone portraying the titular villain. But Thompson quipped that her character’s jealousy of Cruella Deville might’ve mirrored her own envy of Stone.
What Emma Thompson thought about working with Emma Stone Emma Thompson | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Thompson and Stone both had more than a good time doing Cruella. The feature saw Thompson’s ambitious fashion designer, Baroness von Hellman, taking Stone’s Cruella under her wing. The two characters would soon engage in a heated rivalry, both trying to come out on top in the fashion world.
Because of their fierce competition, Thompson’s Baroness spent much of the film being cruel to Stone. But Thompson asserted there were no hard feelings had between the actual actors. Thompson even had a good time playing nasty for a change.

The last time an Emma Stone movie won the Best Costume Design Oscar, I ranked her character's many looks. So, it seems appropriate to do the same this year. Once, there was Cruella, but now, one has Poor Things' Bella Baxter to consider.
Breaking the trend of repeat winners and legendary designers finally getting their due, Holly Waddington is a relative newcomer to the costume design big leagues, even though she has worked with names like Sandy Powell and Jacqueline Durran during her tenure in Angels Costume House. Training her craft in that famed establishment, the designer specialized in period costuming, though she's hardly a stickler for historical accuracy. Bored by exact recreation, the artist prefers to play with anachronism, making her a perfect fit for Yorgos Lanthimos' cinema. Indeed, she met the director through Tony McNamara after she costumes The Great's pilot, another take on...

Updated: Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love brought folks together around the world in its opening frame, singing up a sweet estimated $80M global bow. After coming on strong in early overseas play this week, and as audiences turned a deaf ear to critics, the international box office portion of that is $29M, landing well ahead of expectations.
The Reinaldo Marcus Green-directed biopic is out in 47 overseas markets and on a like-for-like basis including previews is 14% above Elvis and 12% above Rocketman for the same grouping, making it the second biggest music biopic opening behind only Bohemian Rhapsody.
Starring Kingsley Ben-Adir, currently attending the BAFTA Film Awards here in London, Bob Marley: One Love opened at No. 1 in 13 markets and set new opening-day records for a music biopic in the UK and France among others.
In Jamaica, it now holds the record for the biggest film opening of all time.

Emma Stone is dreaming of competing on Jeopardy!, and host Ken Jennings thinks the actress has a real shot.
During a recent appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark, Ken, 49, revealed that he had heard through the grapevine that Emma expressed her desire to be on the show.
When host Mark Consuelos asked Ken what he thought about Emma wanting to be on Jeopardy!, he said, “Yes, she said she wants to be [on the show] … and she doesn’t want to be on Celebrity [Jeopardy!].”
“She wants to be on, like, real, original recipe Jeopardy! and that’s a hard show,” Ken told Kelly Ripa and her husband/co-host, Mark.
Admittedly, Ken would be thrilled to have Emma as a contestant on the popular quiz show.
“We would take her in a heartbeat,” he revealed.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, the darkly comedic genre-bender penned by Tony McNamara that marks a reunion of the Greek filmmaker with McNamara and star Emma Stone after 2018’s Oscar-nominated The Favourite.

Emma Stone tells Variety that shooting for Disney’s “Cruella” sequel will begin “Hopefully sooner rather than later.”
Stone, who plays the titular anti-hero Cruella de Vil in the 2021 live action prequel to “101 Dalmatians,” added that the follow up film is “a work in progress.”
Stone continued to offer updates on the anticipated sequel on the red carpet for the Palm Springs International Film Festival on Thursday night. When asked about revisiting the iconic antagonist, she said, “It’s a blast. She’s a blast. So yeah, we’ll see. It’s a work in progress.”
The first “Cruella” was a box office success, amassing more than $220 million at the global box office. News of a developing sequel broke only weeks after the film’s release in theaters. Stone was confirmed to return to the franchise in August 2021. Director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Tony McNamara are also expected to return.

In movie history, there are a rare few directors whose style has coined an adjective: Felliniesque, Hitchcockian, Chaplinesque. The modern filmmaker most likely to join that class is Yorgos Lanthimos, the Greek auteur famed for “The Lobster” and “The Favourite,” whose newest, wildest project, “Poor Things,” is his most colorful and phantasmagorical to date.
The look of the film – set in a fairy tale 19th century world unlike any you’ve ever seen – is singular, even if the moniker Lanthimosian doesn’t quite roll off the tongue.
“That’s a really hard word to say,” said cinematographer Robbie Ryan with a laugh. The Irish camera maestro earned an Oscar nomination for “The Favourite,” his previous collaboration with Lanthimos.
“Maybe Lanthimosesque is better – or is it even worse? I do totally agree, though: His filmmaking is signature, for sure. It’s inventive in a way that’s undefinable. I can describe...

They were all young once: Don Corleone and Darth Vader, Butch and Sundance, Hannibal and Leatherface, Maleficent and Cruella. And long before he was the world’s best-known chocolatier and distributor of life-changing golden tickets, William “Willy” Wonka was just a twentysomething kid with a top hat, a sweet tooth, and a dream.
For decades, we could only guess how the bright-eyed lad became the candymaker-in-chief. This is where Wonka comes in. A prequel that seeks to both fill in the blanks regarding Roald Dahl’s eccentric sugar pimp and...

In Yorgos Lanthimos‘ comedic and fantastical Poor Things, an adaptation of Alisdair Gray’s novel, the mad scientist does what Dr. Frankenstein never dared to do: he lets his creation free out into the world instead of seeking to kill it. It’s not fear that drives this decision but love, and it sets the tone for a dazzling, bizarre, and imaginative fairy tale of a journey fueled by curiosity.
The mad scientist here is surgeon Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe), a disfigured medical experiment himself at the hands of a cruel father. His creation is Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), a recently deceased woman he’s revived by replacing her brain with that of her unborn baby, rendering her an infant in a grown woman’s body. Godwin tenderly raises Bella as her young mind develops, enlisting an assistant in medical student Max (Ramy Youssef) to document her early stages of re-life.

Two years ago, Disney released a highly anticipated live-action film: Cruella. When the news first dropped about the studio making an origin story focusing on the popular Disney film, many felt that a Cruella De Vil story was unnecessary. Then the trailer was revealed. Immediately, audiences were excited because it reminded them of Todd Philips’ Joker. Then Cruella officially made its way into theaters and Disney Plus. It turned out to be a bland origin story. The issue itself has nothing to do with the fact that it was nothing like Joker. That’s a good thing because Cruella should have...

Spoiler Alert: The following review contains mild spoilers.
Amusing ourselves to death. That’s what media critic Neil Postman called the phenomenon that “The Hunger Games” author Suzanne Collins took to its natural extreme, penning a dystopian YA trilogy whose four-film adaptation minted Lionsgate nearly $3 billion at the global box office. Much like “Harry Potter,” the book series whose Hollywood success made this franchise possible, the big-screen adaptations took a few false steps before hitting their stride with a single director — in this case, Francis Lawrence — who now returns to helm a prequel (far better than the “Fantastic Beasts” movies) that impressively expands the canon while honoring its key themes.
“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” feels like a natural extension of the saga, balancing blood sport, endangered young love and a heightened level of political commentary that respects the intelligence of young audiences as only Collins can.

It’s hard to pinpoint when exactly it became a thing, but in classically cinematic stories of good vs. evil it’s no longer enough to portray the complexities of the bad side. We now have to go back in time and understand the exact origins of evil. Was Cruella simply misunderstood? How about the Joker? Was he just unjustly treated?
In fairness, Coriolanus Snow, the tyrannical president of the dystopian Panem in the original “Hunger Games” films and novels, was never as one-dimensional as these aforesaid villains. But “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” takes a page out of the playbook of their origin stories and gives us an adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ 2020 prequel novel with wildly mixed, overlong and clumsily paced results.
Directed by “Mockingjay Part 1 & 2” filmmaker Francis Lawrence, and written by Michael Lesslie (“Assassin’s Creed”) and Michael Arndt (“Catching Fire” and “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens...

Netflix is sending us to the battlefields of World War II with its new miniseries All the Light We Cannot See — but it’s offering a glimmer of hope as well.
