Have you ever wished a movie was silent? About halfway through “What Lola Wants,” the over-the-top dialogue stops being quirky, and crosses the line into tedious and nonsensical, sapping the pleasures from its sun-blasted retro rockabilly vibe. This kind of meaningless gibberish is not what Al Jolson pioneered for us. Whiskey would have improved the experience, and “What Lola Wants” seems reverse-engineered for an Alamo Drafthouse screening, where you can sip drinks while getting buzzed on cinematic form and self-reflective over-stylization, letting the flowery language slip past in a haze of syllables. This is not to say that "What Lola Wants" is entirely bad. It's a big, big swing, from writer/director Rupert Glasson and it nails a lot of what it is going for—it’s a ballsy, stylish desert road flick of young love on the run. Lola (Sophie Lowe) has faked her own kidnapping to get away...

Australian filmmaker Rupert Glasson today launched a crowdfunding campaign to complete his Us-set road movie What Lola Wants, which stars Sophie Lowe, Beau Knapp and Robert Taylor.
Glasson hopes the film will be a springboard for his next, rather more ambitious project, The Vault, a futuristic film in which the .villains. are Australia.s banks.
The plan is to shoot in Melbourne next March, produced by Ayisha Davies (with whom he collaborated on Lola) and David Lightfoot of Ultrafilms.

Since Wolf Creek changed the horror landscape back in 2005 any new Australian horror film is greeted with anticipation, as we wait and see whether they can provide the same nerve-shredding terror that has been so elusive in horror cinema since. Coffin Rock takes inspiration from Wolf Creek in its dingy outback setting and tense psychological drama, but despite some expert film making never quite delivers the scares it promises.
One of Coffin Rock's best aspects is it's excellent story, an emotionally complex look at the claustrophobia of rural outback life. Jess is the local beauty in a small South Australian fishing community, lusted after by the male population, but in a loving relationship with husband Rob. Rob is infertile and to Jess's frustration they don't seem to be able to have children,...

Attendance was down by 30 percent at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Not surprising, considering the recession still biting and Euro exchange rates keeping prices along the Croisette at ridiculously expensive levels. Yet the number of high-profile genre films in the Official Competition was a bonus for those more used to finding the most controversial entries up for distributor grabs in the Market section. While Park Chan-wook’s Thirst and Gaspar Noe’s Enter The Void certainly had their followers, with Terry Gilliam’s out-of-competition The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus a similar hot ticket, the two biggest stories were Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds and Lars Von Trier’s Antichrist.
Cinema saves the world in Tarantino’s disjointed, history-bending homage to war movies, which takes its misspelled name—but very little else—from Enzo Castellari’s 1978 Italian cult exploiter. Divided into chapters, each highlighting a movie style like Sergio Leone spaghetti Westerns,...
