Sony Pictures Home Entertainment recently revealed that they will be releasing David Fincher's highly acclaimed film The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo on Blu-ray and DVD on March 20th, 2012.
This was a hell of a great film. Fincher did an amazing job adapting it for the big screen. But, I didn't think it was his best work. I might have enjoyed it more had I not already seen the Swedish films and read the books. It would have made the viewing experience so much more intense if I didn't know what happened. But that goes for every book that I've read and every remake I've seen.
One of the things I look forward to most with Fincher's films is the behind the scenes featurettes and documentaries. I love watching how he goes about creating his movies. The studio plans on releasing the Blu-ray and DVD on March 20th...

In theaters on December 21st, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is the first film in Columbia Pictures’ and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures’ three-picture adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s literary blockbuster The Millennium Trilogy. Directed by David Fincher and starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara, the film is based on the first novel in the trilogy, which altogether have sold 65 million copies in 46 countries and become a worldwide phenomenon.
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo introduced readers to financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and avenging hacker Lisbeth Salander. With Salander, Larsson forged a heroine unlike any who had come before in the wide-ranging world of crime thrillers – a punk prodigy whose appearance warns people to stay away, who doesn’t interact “normally” with others, yet whose personal link to those who have been violated lures her into helping Mikael solve the disappearance of Harriet Vanger. Her pursuit of retribution and her tenuous partnership...

I can't wait to see this movie just to do my own compare and contrast assignment. Like "Let Me In" before it, "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" is an update of the fantastic Swedish film directed by Niels Arden Oplev based on Stieg Larsson's novel "Man som hatar kvinnor."
So, will Rooney Mara be better than Noomi Rapace as Lisbeth Salander? Is Daniel Craig good enough to step into Michael Nyqvist's shoes as Mikael Blomkvist?
And does David Fincher understand the intricacies of Larsson's tale as deep as Oplev did?
We'll find out on December 21st when the American version arrives in theaters. For now, take a look at the brand, spanking new trailer of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," the U.S. version, of course!
Here's more info on the film from Yahoo:

Last week some audiences in attendance to promo screenings of Straw Dogs and Moneyball were treated with a special surprise 8-minute trailer for David Fincher's big screen adaptation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. You can read my enthusiastic report here [1], where I pleaded that Sony release the extended trailer online. While that doesn't seem like a possibility, Fincher has convinced the studio to release an extended trailer about half the length -- three minutes and forty five seconds (which is still about double the length of most full length trailers released by studios). Hit the jump to watch the trailer now. Please leave your thoughts in the comments below. You can also watch the trailer in beautiful high definition on Apple.com [2]. Official info: The Millennium Trilogy by Stieg Larsson has been published in 44 countries and has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide thus far. In the U.

The coveted role of Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher's upcoming film The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has been filled by actress Rooney Mara who was last seen in the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street.
Fincher went on a world wide hunt for a actress to take on this character and it looks like he found it in Mara, who beat out pretty much every young actress in Hollywood who was gunning for the role. Some of which included Ellen Page, Carey Milligan and Scarlett Johansson. The deal Mara made includes an option for two sequels that will cover The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest, the second and third books in the Millennium Trilogy by the late author Stieg Larsson.

The casting of Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher’s remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, the first part of Stieg Larsson’s Millenium trilogy, has been the subject of much speculation in recent months. For a long time, the assumption was that it would go to Natalie Portman, but other names in the frame have included Emma Watson, Ellen Page and Carey Mullgrew.
Earlier today Deadline scooped the announcement that Rooney Mara had been cast as Salander. Mara, last seen in the A Nightmare on Elm Street remake earlier this year, seems very canny casting. She has a slightly otherworldly air about her, and is like the other actresses considered, very slight.
Since the piece by Deadline, Sony have issued a press release confirming the casting:

Sony Pictures is anxious to option English-language screen rights to the crime thriller "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo", by Swedish author Stieg Larsson, for producer Scott Rudin.
Yellow Bird Film's Ole Sondberg and Soren Staermose will also produce, with Yellow Bird's Mikael Wallen and Anni Fernandez executive producing.
A Swedish language theatrical feature was recently produced, so far grossing $100 million across Europe.
The novel "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo", aka "Men Who Hate Women", follows journalist, 'Mikael Blomkvist' publisher of Stockholm magazine 'Millennium'.
Losing a libel case brought against him by industrialist 'Hans-Erik Wennerström', Blomkvist agrees to be hired by 'Henrik Vanger', former CEO of the 'Vanger' companies, who offers to back the Millennium and reveal information about Wennerström's criminal activities.
After a chance run-in with 'Lisbeth Salander', a punk computer hacker with a chip on her shoulder, the unlikely couple form a classic detective pair, until the hunters become the hunted.

Following the ever-growing trend of adapting novels for the screen, Sony is attempting to pick up the English-language rights to Swedish novel The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.
Dragon Tattoo focuses on an investigative journalist and a young computer hacker whose lives become intertwined and endangered as they seek to “expose institutions that pull the strings behind the scenes.” The story is the first of three novels in crime thriller series Millenium, by late author Stieg Larsson.
The first novel was turned into a Swedish-language film in February, and Sony became interested in making an English-language version fairly quickly, beginning to option for the rights this past summer. Sony Pictures is in final discussions to option the English-language film rights to Stieg Larsson's posthumously published crime thriller trilogy, the Millennium Series.
Scott Rudin, who was instrumental in securing the rights, is attached to produce along with Ole Sondberg and Søren Stærmose of Swedish production company Yellow Bird Films. Yellow Bird's Mikael Wallen and Anni Fernandez will executive produce.
Steve Zaillian ("American Gangster") has been in discussions to adapt the first book, "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," a bestseller in Europe that has gained in notoriety since Random House published it in the U.S. No deal is yet in place.
"Stieg Larsson's Millennium Series is nothing short of amazing," said Columbia Pictures president Doug Belgrad, who will shepherd the projects with Elizabeth Cantillon. "The novels are very cinematically told, with fantastic characters and page-turning plots. Once you start reading, they are impossible to put down.
