Most great art is made in a dictatorship — the old idiom about a camel being a horse designed by committee comes to mind — but it takes an unsung hero sometimes to get the job done. Dick Polich is one such individual. I had interviewed many of his clients, artists like Richard Prince and Jeff Koons, but his name had never been mentioned until Dan Colen told me about Dick at the opening of Dan's show at Venus Over Los Angeles, Adam Lindemann's new West Coast outpost. Intrigued, I drove to his fabled foundry just north of Dia: Beacon last Thursday to meet the 83-year-old former fighter pilot turned metallurgist.Bill Powers: Where did it all begin?Dick Polich: I went to Yale — class of '54 — to become an engineer. I was a first-generation American. My parents were born in Yugoslavia, and when I left home for New Haven,...

Rob Pruitt already made jeans and concrete-filled jeans as benches, not to mention sofas, and now you can buy his folding chairs. According to Exhibition A, which is selling them (in an edition of 100) for $925 each, they were "conceived after Pruitt’s graffitied plywood tabletops in his solo exhibition at Gavin Brown’s enterprise last October," and are, quoting the Times' review of that show, “tricked out with tangles of images from comics, cartoons, and advertising ... hand-drawn in fluorescent colors and black lines with consummate assurance by Mr.Pruitt’s studio assistants.”Says his friend, the Half Gallery co-owner, Bill Powers, “I’ve always liked the idea of art as furniture, whether it’s a Julian Schnabel throne or an Yves Klein coffee table, or Dan Colen made some park benches, and with this, Rob has taken the imagery off his Graffiti plywood tables and done it as a vinyl...

Bravo announced the cast of the second season of its awesome Work of Art, which will debut in October, and the reality competition series is keeping its host and judges, although one judge will only appear as a guest judge this season. Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn will be just a guest judge, while Jerry Saltz and Bill Powers will judge along with host China Chow; hopefully, they'll do a better job at critiquing this season, correcting...

Bravo's new reality show Work of Art hasn't been particularly well-received by the modern art scene, and that's okay. We saw a glimpse of this with the contestant Judith, who scoffed that the show's "commercial" aspects and forced herself to be eliminated in defiance. However, there are a couple of prominent art figures associated with the show, mainly Jerry Saltz, who is a panel judge on the show but an art critic for New York Magazine in real life. During his time on the show, he has been providing the recaps from his unique perspective.
"I don’t regret doing this show one bit. By this penultimate episode’s end, " Saltz, second from the left in the picture above, shared in his recap of the most recent episode, "however, I regretted what this show was doing to me. I never imagined that narrowing down the remaining five artists to a...

Move over, Padma and Heidi. Let G.W. introduce you to the new China—the one, the only: China Chow. Come June 9, at 11 p.m., the model, the actress, the international style plate, and the forever “It girl” will enter the fray of Bravo TV as the face and force of a transformative show called Work of Art: The Next Great Artist. G.W. believes it will be Bravo’s most sophisticated presentation yet, as it attempts to bring “fine art dialogue to the forefront of pop culture.” Work of Art is the brainchild of Sarah Jessica Parker and her production company, Pretty Matches. It’s got an on-air team led not only by Chow, as the host, but highbrow art experts such as gorgon auctioneer Simon de Pury, who will mentor the 14 artists competing for a cash prize of $100,000 and a solo show at the prestigious Brooklyn Museum of Art.
