San Francisco board supervisor, fearless gay rights activist, and all-around inspiration Harvey Milk is still a heroic figure 35 years after his murder at the age of 48. When he and San Francisco mayor George Moscone were murdered by Dan White, who was only convicted of manslaughter, outrage and grief rippled through the city. In 1984, the Academy Award-winning documentary The Times of Harvey Milk effectively chronicled Milk’s life and death, and because of that film we have indispensable insight into the mind of one of our pioneering gay rights leaders.
And yet, there are still facts about Milk that we either forget or overlook. Here are 10 facts about the man you might not know — some are funny, some are pop cultural, and some, particularly the one about Dan White, are unsettling. But 35 years on, it’s a joy to think about Harvey Milk, whose life was a terrific source of hope,...

One of the most popular actors in Hollywood, Josh Brolin has a lot of A-list friends. But the friendship with the guy he calls his "dance partner," Sean Penn, was sealed with a kiss.
They met back in 2007 on the set of Milk, in which Penn played San Francisco's Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California. Brolin played Dan White, the disturbed city supervisor who assassinated Milk, and served only five years in prison after invoking the infamous "Twinkie defence," which claimed he was under the influence of a junk-food binge.
The two were literally mortal enemies on screen. But when they met on set Penn chose to break the ice by publicly kissing Brolin full on the lips. After vowing to find another project to do together, years later the two friends are back at each other's throats, as real-life gangster...

Biopics are always praised for their lead actor or actress’ realistic or unique portrayal of the subject, but what of the supporting cast? Sure, we do recognize their efforts, they might even receive an Academy Award, but rarely are they honored with something as prestigious as an online comedy list. It’s time to rectify that. Here are some of the more talented, memorable, or uncanny portrayals of people who were important enough to be featured in a movie, but not important enough for that movie to be about them. 10. Josh Brolin as Dan White in Milk It would be really easy to play a person like Dan White one-dimensionally. As a self-proclaimed defender of family and religion against homosexuals and pot smokers in the city of San Francisco, it’s not hard to picture a scowling suit driven to murder out of prejudice and frustration. Brolin didn’t make it so simple, however...

National Coming Out Day is this Thursday (October 11), and I can think of no better way to commemorate it than by revisiting The Times of Harvey Milk, the 1984 Academy Award winner for Best Documentary Feature that tells the story of that ebullient and righteous San Francisco Board Supervisor who was responsible for passing a stringent gay rights ordinance, earned the fitting nickname "the Mayor of Castro Street," and didn't mind shaking hands with political adversaries while telling them, "You never know where my hand has been." There's no other way to put it: Harvey Milk ruled. His energy was infectious, his message was raw, and it's impossible not to wonder what else he'd have accomplished if jilted, Twinkie-tweaking Dan White hadn't murdered him (and Mayor George Moscone) on November 27, 1978. Sure, we'll always have Sean Penn's deeply accurate portrayal from Milk to remind us of his power, but The Times of Harvey Milk...

The Vaccines, Mystery Jets and Tribes have united to perform a one-of-a-kind gig for Mr Jack's Birthday deep underground in the Peak District. The rockers celebrated at a Jack Daniels event held in a cave known as the Devil's Arse on Saturday (October 6), an experience that they variously described as "surreal", "exciting" and "brilliant". "It sounded like fun," Vaccines guitarist Freddie Cowan told Digital Spy. "People ask what you're doing this weekend, I say, 'I'm playing a cave called the Devil's Arse'. "It's a totally new experience and we embrace those... It's really great to do stuff in different places, be put out of your comfort zone, try something new. This is probably the most unique venue we've ever played in." Meanwhile, Dan White of Tribes (more)...

If the gunman's mask was inspired by Bane, we will likely hear some depressingly familiar arguments about films inspiring violence – but pinning blame is a hazardous exercise
The Us reels from another horrific killing spree: 14 people shot dead and many more injured at a showing of the new Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises. Sickeningly, some in the audience reportedly failed to make their escape because they assumed at first that the disturbance was simply a special effect. The gunman was apparently wearing a mask, perhaps a gas-mask, though details are still unclear. Was the mask inspired by the film's villain, Bane? And if so, are we to see a revival of the debate about copycat crimes and the cinema?
The traditional course of the debate is for the denunciation of violent movies to be countered with a denunciation of America's gun laws. And yet the gun laws are much stricter in Norway,...

If what I'm hearing turns out to be true, Josh Brolin is poised to steal Men In Black III right out from under his higher-profile co-star Will Smith, playing the younger version of Tommy Lee Jones's Agent K in what already looks like a damn good impression. Of course, this would be far from the first time Josh Brolin showed up in an ensemble film and blew everybody away, from his terse Llewellyn Moss in No Country for Old Men to his Oscar-nominated turn as Dan White in Milk. But once again Brolin's turn as second-banana may be leading to an even bigger role, and this time a starring one. Over at Showbiz 411, they're hearing that the Ford-Firestone lawsuits of 2000 may become fodder for a movie, adapted from Adam Penenberg's book Tragic Indifference. Josh Brolin could play the Erin Brockovich-style lawyer who stuck up for the victims...

I want to take a moment and extend my thoughts and condolences to Dustin Lance Black, who lost his brother, his protector, Marcus, to cancer this weekend.
Speaking in Florida Wednesday, Newt Gingrich promised that by the second term of his presidency America would have a permanent base on the moon. As much as I want our space program back to glory, I can't stomach one term of Newt, much less two.
There's a great article on the ambitious production of Giant that Matt Doyle is a part of in Dallas, and the hopes it has for Broadway.
I don't know what to say about these images of Miley Cyrus molesting the giant penis birthday cake from her boyfriend Liam Hemsworth's birthday party. I can't get past the fact that he has a giant chocolate icing red velvet penis cake for his birthday to think about her vamping.

"Our revenge is never to forget," says one of the characters at the end of Emily Mann's 1980s play about the trial of Dan White. White, an all-American boy, was the former policeman who in November 1978 shot dead San Francisco's liberal mayor, George Moscone, and Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in the Us. Moscone and Milk – subject of Gus van Sant's Hollywood biopic – were not forgotten: the political landscape was changed by the assassinations, as was the law on diminished responsibility.
Drawing on court transcripts and interviews, Mann's verbatim play harnesses the power of real testimony, but rather oddly presents it under the guise of an old-fashioned courtroom drama, albeit one in which justice itself is on trial. The immediacy of the real voices is muted amid all the posturing. The story is strongest at its most...

Chicago – Does it say something about the current market of Blu-rays that nine of our top ten releases of the year (and, honestly, most of the runner-ups considered) are for catalog releases and special editions instead of films produced in the current era? More and more often, modern releases seem kind of lackluster. Throw on a featurette, maybe a deleted scene or two, and put it on the shelf.
More often, it is the anniversary editions, special release, and, of course, The Criterion Collection that lives up to the true potential of the format. Critics Matt Fagerholm and Brian Tallerico have assembled their ten best of 2011, all of which should be added to your collection as soon as possible. Or ask Santa if you think you’ve been good enough this year.

David Guetta was greeted by applause from more than 2,000 fans as he launched the worldwide premiere of his new film Nothing But the Beat at the iconic Le Grand Rex theatre in Paris.
The Grammy Award-winning artist, producer and DJ, who attended Saturday's event with his wife Cathy, said: "All my life I wanted this music to be as respected as hip-hop, rock and pop but until this moment, it wasn't.
"It's not only about me; it's about the culture and the position of the DJ."
Nothing But the Beat is a full-length documentary-style film chronicling Guetta's life, career and meteoric rise from underground house DJ to global superstar.
The movie - a collaboration between Guetta and Coca-Cola's energy drink Burn - chronicles how David fused house and electronic beats with hip-hop and R&B to create a sound that has topped charts worldwide.

It's a tense and dangerous operation because they're going espionage on a multi-million dollar industry. Water park dolphins sell for a minimum $150,000. But their efforts work. We see the butchery first-hand, and it's unnerving. Essentially, the dolphins are harpooned to death, as the cove fills with blood. By the finish, they're hooking carcasses out of the water, and the cove itself is drenched with sanguine waters.

Josh Brolin always manages to surprise me by being something of a chameleon. It isn't just that he went from being a grizzled Texan in No Country for Old Men to the clean-cut and repressed Dan White in Milk, but then followed it up by actually turning into George W. Bush for W. Now he's pulled off yet another magic trick of casting and makeup, transforming himself in a younger version of his No Country for Old Men co-star Tommy Lee Jones for his part in Men In Black III. Even when Brolin was cast to play a younger version of Agent K-- part of Men In Black III involves time travel back to the 60s-- it seemed like a good call, but the recent set photos snapped by The Daily Mail are almost eerie in how similar Brolin looks to Jones. Rating (out of 5): *****
The ragged, powerful documentary The Times of Harvey Milk captures the beloved spirit and energy of San Francisco supervisor Harvey Milk who was shot down and killed in 1978 -- along with mayor George Moscone -- by fellow supervisor Dan White. Astonishingly, thanks to the infamous "Twinkie Defense" -- in which he blamed his depression on too much junk food -- White was only convicted of manslaughter and served just five and a half years in prison.
Though the film will probably mean more to San Francisco residents like myself, and to gay people everywhere, it's more than that. It's a classic document about hatred and bravery that is still essential today -- if not more so. However, thanks to the success of Gus Van Sant's biopic Milk (2008), perhaps more people will turn to this earlier film for more details.

The Times of Harvey Milk Directed by Robert Epstein [1] Edited by Deborah Hoffmann [2] and Robert Epstein Criterion's relationship with non-fiction filmmaking is an interesting one. They've certainly given some classic documentaries the releases they deserve (Salesman [3], Gimme Shelter [4], Harlan County USA [5], For All Mankind [6], etc.) but I really wish they'd open their minds a bit and stray from their more conservative line up. Having said that, it was definitely a surprise to see Rob Epstein's Academy Award winner The Times of Harvey Milk [7] on their list of upcoming releases. Certainly a refreshing choice but also a reminder that they've barely tapped the surface of a reservoir of amazing non-fiction films that are floating around in sub-standard DVD limbo. Hopefully this release is a sign of thing to come. For those unfamiliar with the story of Harvey Milk, I'll kindly lay out the details for you: Harvey Milk was the...

Chicago – Harvey Milk was the sort of grassroots political hero that would’ve never fit into our modern world of corporately controlled politics. He was a man of his word, and he had many of them. His fundamental belief in equal rights for all citizens provided the fuel for his tireless work ethic, intoxicating exuberance and extraordinary bravery.

This week, you have the chance to become friends with celebrities. Alicia Keys, Kim Kardashian, Snoop Dogg--they're all ready to befriend you and build a relationship. On Twitter, that is.
For the rest of the week, eBay is hosting charity auction TwitChange, the first ever celebrity tweet auction, which is raising money for aHomeInHaiti.org. We're all for lending a hand to Haiti, but selling off Twitter connections is not necessarily the best way to do it.
Getting non-celebrity followers is pretty cheap. Elsewhere on eBay, you can "buy" followers for under a penny each. Want to stroke your ego with 5,000 followers? That'll cost you just $20--about a quarter of a penny per follower. Marketing companies such as uSocial and Hype140 are offering followers by the thousands--100,000 for $3,479 or 50,000 for $500. In other words, it's inexpensive to inflate your follower counts--tweets are cheap.
Of course, TwitChange isn't just hawking any old followers,...

Gus Van Sant gives a thoughtful and moving account of the Californian politician, dog mess and all
Director: Gus Van Sant
Entertainment grade: A–
History grade: A–
Harvey Milk was elected to the San Francisco board of supervisors in 1978, becoming the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in California. He was shot and killed by fellow supervisor Dan White, 11 months into his term.
Dialogue
Harvey Milk (Sean Penn) is recording a tape for posterity: "This is to be played only in the event of my death by assassination," he says. As an introduction for a voiceover, that seems too good to be true – but it is true. The real Harvey Milk made the tape a year before his death. The real tape can be heard in the 1984 Oscar-winning documentary The Times of Harvey Milk. Famously, director Gus van Sant remade Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho shot by shot.

One of the best parts of doing a Their Best Role piece is the debate over what constitutes a specific actor's greatest performance. I go through it personally before I write one of these -- perusing IMDb pages and my own memories, weighing one part against another, one film against the next, and then I finally come to a conclusion and sit down to write -- knowing full well that I've merely completed the first of many debates to come. That's the beauty of writing about films, actors, and directors -- there's room for many different opinions and they're all essentially valid.
Take the subject of this entry -- Josh Brolin. At 42 years old, Brolin has had at least three roles that could qualify as his "best" (make it four if you want to get nostalgic for The Goonies ... ). I wrestled over the decision when it came to which one to choose.

With the fourth season of ABC's Ugly Betty settling in on Friday night (and garnering so-so ratings), it's only fitting that our plucky heroine would have trouble adjusting to her new position as feature editor of Mode.
Fortunately her new trails and tribulations have lit a creative spark, because this season is already rife with potentially juicy storylines. Let's take a look at the good, the bad, and the "meh" of last week's episode, Blue on Blue. (All Pics - ABC/Patrick Harbron)
Maybe if we stand perfectly still she'll sniff us and leave
The Good: Evil Marc Returns
Of all Ugly Betty characters, Marc has probably grown the most. He started out as a one-note, one-dimensional stereotype (the bitchy gay lackey), who had it in for Betty and lived to torment her on a weekly basis.
Over the years, though, the character has been allowed to reveal his insecurities and to mature,...
