Packed with a star-studded cast, Jared Hess’ heist comedy “Masterminds” finally hits theaters at this weekend after months of push backs. Promising big laughs and high stakes, the film is based on the true story of the 1997 Loomis Fargo robbery, where David Scott Ghantt (Zach Galifianakis) and seven other conspirators stole $17 million from a Loomis, Fargo & Co. vault in North Carolina in one of company’s armored trucks, in what was one of the largest heist in U.S history.
The film stars Galifianakis, Kristen Wiig, Owen Wilson, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones and Jason Sudeikis as members, accomplices and pursuers of the bumbling crime ring. “Masterminds” exaggerates the already absurdly true premise, and while most critics praised the cast’s performances, some aren’t coming along for the goofy criminal joyride.

“The Purge: Election Year” is the third installment in the James DeMonaco-directed horror series. This time around, former police sergeant Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo) has become head of security for Senator Charlene Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell), the front runner in the next Presidential election who vowed to eliminate the Purge. Her hate for the annual kill-fest, due to her past history, makes her the target of a new scheme that puts her life at risk.
IndieWire’s Eric Kohn gave the horror film a C+. “James DeMonaco’s allegorical franchise takes a sharp turn into racial politics, but falls short of doing them justice,” he wrote in his review. He adds that, “in theory, ‘Election Year’ offers a form of catharsis from contemporary anxieties by turning them into entertainment. Instead, this latest entry in a ridiculous franchise has become a victim of its own sick joke.”

“The Purge: Election Year,” is the third installment in the “Purge” franchise, but after its two terrifying predecessors this horror disappoints. “The Purge” takes place in a futuristic United States where crime is non-existent because of a policy put in place by The New Founding Fathers — one night each year, any and all crime is allowed for 12 hours. “The Purge: Election Year,” much like “The Purge: Anarchy” before it, wears its vintage John Carpenter allegiance on its sleeve,” wrote TheWrap’s Dave White. “DeMonaco and editor Todd E. Miller only let up the action in order to draw your attention to some.

“Now You See Me 2” is the latest summer movie to succumb to sequelitis. The film currently holds a score of 38 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics calling the follow-up to 2013 cinema caper “preposterous,” “excruciating,” and a “brain-dead sequel.” “To keep the entire enterprise from floating away, cinematographer Peter Deming (‘Mulholland Drive,’ the upcoming ‘Twin Peaks’ revival) positions most of the onscreen bodies in as much detailed darkness as possible, the better to minimize the utter ridiculousness of their actions,” wrote TheWrap’s film critic Dave White in a review entitled, “‘Now You See Me 2’ Review: Daniel Radcliffe and Company.

“Captain America: Civil War” explores what happens when a bunch of Marvel’s biggest superheroes are divided, but movie critics are united — and they love it. With 15 critics counted on Rotten Tomatoes, so far, the third “Captain America” film has a 100 percent “fresh” rating. Based on nine critics’ reviews over on Metacritic, the movie has an 84/100. In other words, go be ready and willing to hand over your money when it finally comes out on May 6. TheWrap‘s own Dave White summed it up in his review as “serious-minded action that never forgets to indulge in serious fun.” Also Read: 'Captain America:.

“God’s Not Dead 2” is getting sacrilegious reviews from critics, scoring a meager 13 percent on Rotten Tomatoes after opening in limited theaters Friday. Reviews have been describing the most recent faith-based film as “a sad little prison of a movie” and a “stupid, horribly-made” film. And TheWrap’s film critic Dave White agreed, titling his review, “Religious Courtroom Drama Should be Held in Contempt.” “ sequel to the faith-based hit feels less heavy-handed but still treats Christian belief as an argument to be won, and non-believers as villains to be crushed,” he wrote, comparing the sequel to the 2014 original. Lionsgate dropped their new romantic/drama movie, "The Choice," into theaters today, February 5th,2016, and all the major, top movie critics have delivered their review opinions, and it turns out they weren't very good opinions for this flick to say the least. They gave it only an overall 25 score out of a possible 100 across 14 reviews at the Metacritic.com site The film features: Alexandra Daddario, Benjamin Walker, Maggie Grace, Teresa Palmer and Tom Welling. We've posted comments from a couple of the critics, below. Richard Roeper at the Chicago Sun-Times, gave it a very less than stellar 50 grade, stating: "The Choice is classic Sparks, and by that I mean it’s a mediocre, well-photographed, undeniably heart-tugging, annoyingly manipulative and dramatically predictable star-crossed romance." David Lewis over at the San Francisco Chronicle, gave it an awful 25 grade, saying: "The Choice has a twist or two toward the end, and they’re...

The film stars: James Ransone, Shannyn Sossamon, Robert Sloan and Dartanian Sloan. We've posted blurbs from a couple of the critics, below. Simon Abrams from RogerEbert.com, gave it a pretty weak 50 grade, stating: " Sinister 2 may be ambitious, but its best ideas are, as they're expressed, dumb, unmoving, and repetitive." Kyle Smith from the New York Post, gave it a 50 score, saying: "It’s somehow both too drawn-out and abrupt — but it’s got creepiness galore." Dave White over at TheWrap, gave it a 50 grade. Ballads have their place in summer song history. Put on this slinky dress in hot-weather and you'll understand why. "You Don't Own Me" is a starting-stopping-heart-halting kiss-off by Grace, who does her newish turn on the 1963 tune by Lesley Gore (written by John Madara and Dave White, produced by Quincy Jones). The tune has hit No. 1 in Grace's homeland Australia, and was signed to RCA this year, set up with producers like Puff Daddy and -- you guessed it -- Quincy Jones. Again! Her Ep "Memo" dropped just this week.

We've got several behind the scenes photos showing off several different alien makeup designs that were created for Guardians of the Galaxy. A couple things that I noticed and loved about this film were all the practical effects that were used to help bring it to life and the retro look of it all.
Dave White was the special effects makeup designer that helped Gunn create the looks for Gamora, Drax, Nebula, Yondu, Korath, and several of the other aliens in Guardians of the Galaxy. This is what he had to say about working on the movie:
“James [Gunn] always pushed for practical and makeup effects. He wanted, like me, to see the real deal there on set. I’ve been fortunate to have been around the Marvel world for a little while. I like to think my own artwork and style has worked well within the universe. James had very...

“James [Gunn] always pushed for practical and makeup effects,” said Guardians of the Galaxy special effects makeup designer, Dave White, of character designs in the Marvel film. “He wanted, like me, to see the real deal there on set.” White, who previously sculpted the look of Red Skull in Captain America and later designed creatures in Thor: The Dark World, worked with Gunn to create the looks for Gamora, Drax, Nebula, Yondu, Korath, and several aliens in Guardians of the Galaxy. “I’ve been fortunate to have been around the Marvel world for a little while,” he enthused to Co.Create. “I like to think my own artwork and style has worked well within the universe. There have only been two films in the V/H/S horror anthology franchise so far, but if the jump in quality between the first and second are any indication it’s a series of increasing returns. This bodes well for a third film, and while we’ve known it was coming we had no details to go on until now. Per ScreenDaily, Epic Pictures Group will be bringing the second sequel to the Cannes marketplace next month in pursuit of buyers. They’ve released the still above and a few morsels of information about the film including the official title, the writers and directors and the revelation that for the first time the segments will share a common narrative theme. V/H/S Viral is once again produced by The Collective and Bloody Disgusting and appears to feature four stories plus a wraparound. The announced directors include Gregg Bishop (Dance of the Dead), Todd Lincoln (The Apparition...

To those who say that the found-footage horror genre has been done to death, I point to the micro-budgeted V/H/S series, which has succeeded in bringing together some of the genre’s most promising directors to collaborate on blood-curdling, interconnected short films.
The first film, V/H/S, was scattershot in its execution, with some strong segments (The Sick Thing That Happened to Emily When She Was Younger) and some dull ones (notably Second Honeymoon). Follow-up V/H/S/2 was much better, boasting some terrific scares (especially in instant horror classic Safe Haven) and only one weak link (Slumber Party Alien Abduction). So, I’m understandably excited about the recently announced third installment, now confirmed with the title V/H/S Viral.
The overarching narrative that connects the horror shorts in this film will focus on, “fame-obsessed teens who unwittingly become stars of the next internet sensation.” Though...

With the success of V/H/S and its sequel, a third film moving forward has been expected, but we were surprised when nothing turned up at Sundance, where the first two films made their world premiere. Thankfully, the project is alive and well, and we can now tell you which directors are on board.
According to Screen Daily, the third film will be titled V/H/S Viral and will focus on “fame-obsessed teens who unwittingly become stars of the next internet sensation.”
The directors include Todd Lincoln (The Apparition), Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes), Marcel Sarmiento, Gregg Bishop (Dance of the Dead), Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (Resolution). There’s no casting news as this time, but we know that the screenplays were written by Marcel Sarmimento, Tj Cimfel, Dave White, Gregg Bishop, Nacho Vigalondo, Justin Benson, Aaron Moorehead and Todd Lincoln.

Following two successful horror anthologies thus far, the V/H/S series is continuing, and the first details on the sequel have surfaced. The threequel is called V/H/S Viral and this time follows fame-obsessed teens who unwittingly become stars of the next internet sensation. This will likely be the story of the bookends used to tie all the horror shorts together. Speaking of which, this time the shorts will be directed by Todd Lincoln (The Apparition), Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes), Marcel Sarmiento (Deadgirl), Gregg Bishop (Dance of the Dead), and Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead (Resolution). That sounds great! Here's the first still from V/H/S Viral, that teases a rather erotic setting for the sequel (via ScreenDaily): As for writing duties, all the directors had a hand in their scripts, but there's also some work from T.J. Pixar helped change the way we see animated movies, offering something for adults as well as children. Disney is following suit — especially with its new movie Frozen, which has a deeper subtext than the Mouse House's usual offerings and contains more social awareness. As our own Dave White put it, “these are princesses who buck traditional narrative outcomes…. It's a movie about fear and grief and the power of familial, sibling love to sort it all out.” Following Frozen’s success, Disney has announced a new project, Moana (Mo-ah-na). This one won’t arrive in theaters until 2018, but the John Musker and Ron Clement-directed (Aladdin, The Princess and the Frog) film...

Dave White, our resident film critic, doesn't just have opinions on new movies coming out; he's got plenty to say about older movies too. Every other Tuesday he'll be bringing a past movie to light as it relates to current movies and movie-related issues. Enjoy! Then go read all Dave's reviews. Let’s say you’re stranded in the middle of the ocean on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger. We will say that. But if we spoke that first sentence out loud while standing within observable distance of you and the tiger, we’d see you get eaten by the time the last word was uttered. Tigers do that. They eat you. Unless, somehow, by some miracle of maneuvering, you’re able to avoid that fate. Then you crash your lifeboat up against a deserted island. That means...

It's no surprise based on his comprehension of Christmas cinema alone that Duralde wrote the...

This week sees the end of one of moviedom's most popular franchises ever: The Twilight Saga. In case you didn't know, Breaking Dawn Part 2 is now in theaters, and our sister site Movies.com has it more than covered. Check out A Movie Fan's Eulogy to 'Twilight' and find out when you can watch it with your kids; debate who's the tougher heroine, Bella or Katniss; and lots more. The site's notoriously finicky critic Dave White agrees with other resounding statements around da interwebs...Bd Part 2 is indeed the best of the entire saga. Read his review, and let him know if you agree. Of course, Bd Part 2 wasn't the only movie to open this week--there was also Daniel Day-Lewis's Oscar-baiting performance in Lincoln. Here, 10 other historical figures...

The moviegoing world was all abuzz over this week's news that George Lucas sold LucasFilm to Disney, and over on our sister site Movies.com, they took that conversation a few steps further to ask what Disney should do with Indiana Jones, and which LucasArts games should be made into movies. Check out those stories, and these others that are worth your while. Judgment Dave: Mad Monster Party and Why Stop-motion Doesn't Suck -- In his brand-new regular column, resident Movies.com film skewerer critic Dave White takes on a blogger at the U.K.'s Guardian and comes to the defense of stop-motion movies like Frankenweenie. Jane Lynch on Going Disney for 'Wreck-It Ralph' The Wreck-It Ralph (and Glee!) star talks about her "uber-sexy" animated character,...

Dave White, our resident film critic, doesn't just have opinions on new movies coming out; he's got plenty to say about older movies too. Each month he'll be bringing a past movie to light as it relates to current movies and movie-related issues. Enjoy! I believe in the presence of an exclusive, frozen room in the Hot Place Where Bad People Go. And I believe it's reserved for film writers who make a special point of wholesale trashing an entire genre of filmmaking. One of those people recently penned a piece for the U.K.'s Guardian newspaper, petulantly titled: "Stop admiring Frankenweenie! Why stop-motion doesn't move me." The writer, David Cox, reasons that stop-motion requires too much effort to produce, is aesthetically inferior to digital...

Editor’s note: Critical Consensus is a biweekly feature in which two critics from Indiewire’s Criticwire network discuss new releases with Indiewire’s chief film critic, Eric Kohn. Here, The Wrap critic Alonso Duralde joins his husband, Movies.com contributor Dave White, to discuss "Celeste and Jesse Forever," which opens this Friday. The couple also co-host a podcast, which you can find here. Alonso, in your review of the movie for The Wrap, you predicted that the eventual buyer would take it back to the editing room to clean up the final act. Did it seem like any of that happened when you watched it again recently? Alonso Duralde: I think that was just wishful thinking on my part (laughs). Apparently, they changed a few music cues but apart from that the version that you see now is the version that they showed in our sitting. I thought...
