- He was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1960 Queen's Honours list before being awarded the K.C.V.O. (Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order of the British Empire) in the 1969 Queen's Honours List for his services to music.
- He was Director of Music for the Portsmouth Division of the Royal Marines from 1931 to 1953. He was Principal Director from 1953 to 1968.
- He was awarded the Member of the Royal Victorian Order of the British Empire in the 1939 King's Honours List and Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 1954 Queen's Honours List for his services to the military and music.

- He was a Founding Member of the International Military Music Society. He was also President of the International Military Music Society from 1977 to 1995. In 1988, he was installed as the Master of the Worshipful Company of Musicians.

- In 1931, he was commissioned as Lieutenant of the Royal Marines and appointed Director of Music for the Portsmouth Division of the Corps and directed the Royal Marines Band aboard the Royal Yacht. In 1947, he joined the HMS Vanguard for a Royal Tour in South Africa and in 1949 toured in Canada and the United States with the band.
- He was appointed the position of Principal Director of Music of the Royal Marines and Lieutenant Colonel and elected as a Fellow to the Royal Academy of Music in 1953.
- He was awarded the EMI Golden Disc Award in 1969 for the sales of over 1 million Royal Marines Band records.
- He was guest conductor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
