Eli Roth just kicked off a new horror franchise with his slasher movie Thanksgiving (read our review Here), as it was recently announced that Thanksgiving 2 is on track for a 2025 release. But while Roth is currently focused on holiday slashing, two franchises he previously created – the Hostel and Cabin Fever franchises – came up while he was sitting down for an interview with CinePOP. And during this interview, he said he hopes to revisit and revive those franchises someday!
Roth told CinePOP, “Hostel, there’s a lot more to do. I’d love to go back to Hostel at some point. And Cabin Fever as well. They’re a part of me, like my children, and I feel like I’ve been ignoring them for too long. I’d love to go back to them, in some way. I have ideas.“

New Trailer for The Blackening: "The Blackening centers around a group of Black friends who reunite for a Juneteenth weekend getaway only to find themselves trapped in a remote cabin with a twisted killer. Forced to play by his rules, the friends soon realize this ain’t no motherf****** game. Directed by Tim Story and screenplay and screen story by Tracy Oliver & Dewayne Perkins, The Blackening skewers genre tropes and poses the sardonic question: if the entire cast of a horror movie is Black, who dies first?

When Black Adam dropped its first trailer Wednesday, viewers saw Dwayne Johnson trade barbs with a team of heroes that may be unfamiliar to general audiences. That superhero team, the Justice Society, will rise to new levels of public consciousness when the film opens in October, and DC is hoping to capitalize on that high-profile debut.
Thus, DC is launching The Justice Society Files, a four-issue series debuting in July. The main cover will be from artist Kaare Andrews, and each issue will have a variant cover featuring the likeness of the four actors who make up the Justice Society — Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell), Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo — though his face is obscured) and Dr. Fate (Pierce Brosnan).
Cavan Scott, known for his work on Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The High Republic initiative, penned the four-issue series and collaborated with a roster of artists.

I want to open this week by reporting on the recent success of my Hero Initiative Auction on eBay. First off I want to thank the four buyers who made it possible to make a £20 donation and from a personal point of view they all left positive reviews to add to my growing seller status. As it averaged out I sold one item for every week the auction ran. While I did have plenty of interest in other listings the buyers pulling the trigger just weren’t there. I feel the auction is something I will revisit yearly. After this years mild success I would have more confidence to start listings lower, especially if they are going to pick up viewers. They may be more inclined to bid with lower starting prices. I think my obvious thought was to start slightly higher so as to make as big a donation as possible.

Firstly, what a stunning cover. Reminds me of the Frank Brunner stuff from the 1970’s. If that’s what Kaare Andrews was shooting for, it’s a bullseye. If not, a damn good unintended tribute. So, it’s another Marvel event, albeit a mini-one this time. Doctor Strange gets a 5 issue mini-series, with a few on-shots sprinkled in for good measure. This was an easy pick up for me. I love Doctor Strange as a character, and feel he’s not always given the respect due to him. I know a former top surgeon/sorcerer supreme is not the most relatable character in the world, but the circles Doctor Strange can, and does, move in make for some fantastic stories. Treat him as a normal superhero, then meh. Make use of all the possibilities his abilities and personality allow,...

You know the drill by now. Whenever there is a holiday or celebration of some sort, DC whip up a fresh helping of their 80 Page Giants. They usually consist of ten or so stories, by a mix of top name creators and some unknowns obviously given a short story assignment to bed them in gradually in readiness for greater things down the line. Story quality is usually as mixed as you would expect, some great stuff, some average, and some filler. Overall, though, you get good value for your money. So, February being Valentines, this time round we are in the mood for love….
First story up is the obvious I suppose, being that Batman and Catwoman have one of the longest on and off romances in comics, and basically DC put Batman in everything at the moment. ‘Perfect Matches...

It’s somehow almost 2021, which means the DC Universe is about to enter its Future State, the big two month crossover that kicks off the new year by pausing its regular line, and diving deep into the wild, varied timelines and parallel universes for new angles from fresh creators. And we are happy to have your exclusive first look at the February covers and solicitations for the Justice League family of books.
Since half the fun of solicits is trying to piece together what’s happening in the book from the 50 words and a cover, we decided to engage in some wild, semi-informed speculation on what might be coming from DC’s event.
Let’s get right to it: Future State has a very strong Seven Soldiers of Victory vibe.
The original Seven Soldiers were briefly a superteam from the ’40s, brought back sporadically whenever a comic needed a nostalgia boost,...

Billy Batson rounds out the Shazam Family for his battle with Black Adam and the Deadly Sins.
Shazam is turning in one of my favorite villain team ups of all time. I can think of other rogues galleries that might make me lose my mind harder, but pound for pound, putting the Seven Deadly Sins, Dr. Sivana, Mr. Mind, and Black Adam on the same page is almost guaranteed to make me excited.
Dr. Sivana is pretty much my ideal mad scientist. He’s as arrogant as any other villain in comics, and when that’s done well, it’s perfection. If you peel away Sivana’s self regard, he can actually be a pretty capable villain, but his ridiculously high opinion of himself always gets in the way and leads to his defeat.
Black Adam is surprisingly one of my favorite characters in all of comics because of his versatility.

Andrea Sorrentino was already incredible, but he brings it to a new level on Joker: Killer Smile with Jeff Lemire.
I feel like everyone has a Jack Kirby. Every artist working at a consistent, Big 2-level in comics, when asked to contribute something that looks like Jack Kirby art, can submit a piece that looks similar to what the King did, even if only two or three people can make something that could plausibly pass as Kirby art (for the record: Walt Simonson and Keith Giffen Omac does the trick). Andrea Sorrentino, the artist on Joker: Killer Smile, did it himself on Legion of Super-Heroes: Millenium. His Kamandi story was up to his typical high standards for art, but it was also really surprising in how much Kirby there was in it. And while it's not especially surprising that he can do a great Kirby impression, it...

To say that 2018 will be a big year for Superman is a massive understatement. Not only will Action Comics #1000 be hitting stands in a couple of months and a special hardcover will see release in order to celebrate his 80th anniversary in publication, but we also have the matter of Brian Michael Bendis becoming the guiding hand behind Big Blue for the foreseeable future.
To quickly recap, Bendis will pen a Man of Steel, a six-issue weekly miniseries set to launch in late May, before taking over the flagship books in July with a freshly relaunched Superman #1 and Action Comics #1001. Having taken that in, you probably couldn’t help but notice a three-month gap separating Action Comics #1000 from #1001.
As it turns out, DC actually does have a plan for that, for they’ll allow the current creative teams to conclude their runs with special oversized 48-page one-shots in May. Personally,...

Synopsis:
Special double-sized first issue! The One% own more than half the world’s wealth. They’ve crashed economies, bought governments, and have amassed more power than any other group in history, but they still don’t have enough. With this kind of power how can anyone make them pay? Who will make them pay? Enter Renato Jones, a mysterious vigilante out to even the score. When he enters the fray The Super-rich Are Super F***Ed.
Review:
What happens if you were to mix Bruce Wayne and Frank Castle together, but instead of just any criminals the hybrid vigilante targets the super rich 1%? Well, then you’d have Renato Jones! I wasn’t sure what to expect from this series but it had Kaare Andrews, so I knew I was in! It’s completely his baby, and that leaves so much room for insane storylines and fantastic artwork!

Variant covers are something of a tradition in American comics--usually superhero comics. While I generally abhor the tradition for two reasons (one, the covers never represent the actual content in the books, and two, I hate that it preys on the completionist's Ocd), even I have to admit that they tend to get some quality cover designs out of it, and if this first series of covers is any indication, this will be no exception.
In celebration (and promotion) of the upcoming Batman v Superman, DC will be producing three variant covers for ten issues of comics. The first issue to get this treatment will be Detective Comics #50, with the cover being done by Rafael Grampa.
You can check out these covers below!
Below is the full list of comic issues that will be receiving the treatment:

There are very few film makers working today who have the same filmic sensibilities as me, whose work resonates with me the most – be it because I can see influences in their work that inspired me or be it that they’re just as demented as me (and I mean that in a good way). In fact I can count them on one hand: The Astron-6 guys, Dustin Mills, Kaare Andrews, Pearry Teo and Jason Trost. These are the film makers whose work I will watch no matter what the subject matter, no matter the budget and no matter what the opinion on a particular film is…

We all remember the controversy that surrounded the production of Cabin Fever 2, where director Ti West was met with overwhelming studio-interference, to the point that he tried to have his name removed from the project. I don’t have the second film, but there is no denying that it is “bad”. Still, though it had a somewhat entertaining quality, even if it was a bastardized version of what it was originally intended. After that, there was always talk of a new sequel, and even a reboot, and now that a sequel has actually been produced, it seems as though, instead of making a film that connections to Patient Zero, like they originally intended, they’re going with a reboot of the series instead. Nevertheless, Patient Zero exists, so how does it stack up against the first two films? Well, it is definitely better than Spring Fever, but there is a catch.

Each of the “Cabin Fever” films have thus far been directed by genre filmmakers with a very specific vision. That may seem like a low bar to set until you glimpse the history of horror franchise-building. The first “Cabin Fever” revealed a certain fiendish sense of humor courtesy of horror merrymaker Eli Roth, who thus far keeps making more and more of a failed effort to maintain a straight face. “Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever” was a film reportedly compromised in the editing room, but what footage remained reveled in Ti West's more misanthropic worldview. But, and this is not meant to shade him, only the talented Kaare Andrews has actually used the material to make an honest-to-god horror film. The delightfully dumb and spooky “Cabin Fever: Patient Zero” is that movie. The set-up, like the rest of the film, is familiar: the flesh-eating strain from the first films...

Grippingly making an independent movie filled with harrowing visual effects that are fueled by a frighteningly realistic subject matter about the perils of science can be a horrifying prospect for some filmmakers. But ambitious director Kaare Andrews drew on his expansive artistic experience, including illustrating such comics as ‘The Incredible Hulk’ and ‘The Amazing Spider-Man,’ for his helming effort on the new horror sci-fi thriller, ‘Cabin Fever: Patient Zero.’ The elaborate production design and make-up of the prequel to ‘Cabin Fever’ and ‘Cabin Fever: Spring Break’ helped infuse the origin story of the virus outbreak with an ominous feeling and foreshadowing of what was terrifyingly set to come. ‘Cabin Fever: [ Read More ]

When Cabin Fever came out in 2002, it was a sensation among fans of freaky frights. The film packed more than a little punch with its own version of the karate kid, a leg shaving scene that set disposable razor sales back for a year, and a German Shepherd who made Cujo look like a lapdog.
Eli Roth’s Cabin Fever left a legacy hard to live up to, but of course a dumbed-down sequel was released. It was directed by Roth’s Bff Ti West, but one would never guess that after the studio heads got hold of it in the editing room and butchered it.
Regardless, the Cabin Fever name still carries weight so there is a prequel that's out now on demand and will be in theaters on August 1, 2014.

How much does Sean Astin know about disgusting infectious diseases? A lot more now than he did a few years ago, probably.
The Lord of the Rings actor can currently be seen in FX’s vampire-virus drama The Strain and is also one of the stars of Cabin Fever: Patient Zero, the third movie in the flesh-eating virus horror franchise which Eli Roth kicked off back in 2002 with his directorial debut Cabin Fever. Patient Zero itself is directed by Kaare Andrews and concerns a Caribbean vacation which goes (as is the tendency in films whose title features the words “Cabin” and “Fever”) badly awry.

I used to watch any horror movie I could put my hands on, back in the good old days of VHS. Going to the different tape rental outlets in St. Louis, (remember Mom and Pop video rental stores? St. Louis used to be full of them.)
Getting to see movies like Re-Animator or Scanners in a theater was a very special treat. I could even enjoy the by-the-numbers of a Friday the 13th or Halloween entry. Blood and gore never bothered me, the more the better. If the movie wasn’t really scary maybe it might have been funny or so bad it was good.
Now, I don’t know, maybe it’s from getting old and having so little time to waste on these kinds of films. I find more of my time taken up with rediscovered silent films,...

“Does this look infected?”
Your ol’ pal (well, I guess for the readers here at Famous Monsters I’m your new pal, seeing as this is my first review here!) Daniel Xiii really digs a flick that piles on the gore, a preference that has existed in me since the glory days of 80’s splatter shockers; so any new release that harkens back to those more extreme, over-the-top days of gallons o’ grue is always welcome in the crypt of Xiii.

Review & Interview by Daniel Xiii.
“Does this look infected?”
Your ol’ pal (well, I guess for the readers here at Famous Monsters I’m your new pal, seeing as this is my first review here!) *full disclosure: a theatrical screening of this film was provided by Sinister Cinemas and Raven Banner Entertainment. Director: Kaare Andrews. Writer: Jake Wade Wall. Cast: Sean Astin, Currie Graham, Ryan Donowho, Brando Eaton and Jillian Murray. Cabin Fever 3: Patient Zero was originally developed as a prequel. This film would be the first in the franchise, followed by Eli Roth's Cabin Fever (2002) and Ti West's Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever (2009). Later, the script was reworked and the film is the second sequel in the franchise. And really, this is a standalone film as this title has only the loosest connections with the previous two films. This second sequel uses several standard indie horror features, which will be recognizable to most fans. However, actor Sean Astin as Porter offers a few deadly surprises along the way. Also, a few slower moments threaten to derail the momentum of the film,...

The good news is, that a “prequel” to Cabin Fever is hitting VOD outlets in less than a month. The bad news is, Cabin Fever 2 left such a bad taste in some viewers’ mouths, that I have no idea if there is even any public interest in such a thing. I was one of the ones that was initially shocked by the badness of Cabin Fever 2, because it had a young but strong cast, and one of my favorite up-and-coming directors attached to the project. The studio intervened so much, though, that Ti West exited before it was even finished, and fought really hard(and...

Our friends at Raven Banner Entertainment and Cineplex Entertainment will present Cabin Fever: Patient Zero this Thursday, May 29th, as part of their Sinister Cinema series. And Raven Banner wants to give five lucky winners across Canada one of five double passes for a screening near them. On top of that, here in Toronto, they want to give away two double passes and an invite to the Cabin Cocktail to meet director Kaare Andrews before the screening. Fangoria's Chris Alexander will be hosting a Q&A with Andrews after the screening. All you have to do is head on over to Raven Banner's Patient Zero page and watch the trailer. Then e-mail me the answer to my skill testing question here with the subject "I've got Cabin Fever" and...
