Doug Jones, an independent film programmer with almost three decades of experience in film exhibition, contributed to the development of film culture across the U.S., and a former contributor to IndieWire, died November 2.
The news was announced on Instagram by Vidiots, the Los Angeles non-profit video store and cinema where Jones had worked as a buyer and programmer since May. On November 3, the video store announced that its screenings would be canceled through November 5, due to losing “a dear member” of its team. On November 4, it paid tribute directly to Jones.
“It breaks our heart to share that we have lost the great and wonderful Doug Jones, a beloved and indispensable member of the Vidiots family and a cornerstone of the global film programming community,” reads that statement posted on Vidiots’ Instagram account. “Doug is forever loved by his beautiful son and family, and an enormous network of devoted friends and colleagues.

Writers Blast Paramount for Putting ‘Mean Girls’ on TikTok: ‘Another Way Not to Pay Us for Our Work’
Paramount angered writers, producer and fans of “Mean Girls” on Tuesday by sharing the entire 2004 comedy on TikTok in 23 parts.
“As the WGA strike comes to a close, studios find another way not to pay us for our work,” wrote “It Follows” producer Rebecca Green on Tuesday.
“Every filmmaker dreams about cutting up their film into 23 parts. Congrats!” said “The Tale” producer Mynette Louie.
Like Spotify, TikTok does pay royalties to musical artists, labels and distributors with licensing contracts. However, the amount of money being shared directly with artists has been criticized by musicians including Snoop Dogg.
The rapper voiced his support for the WGA strike in May, saying, “Some of these artists are streaming millions and millions and millions and millions of f—king streams and they don’t got no millions of dollars in the pot.”
“Another thing that occurred to me about the whole Mean Girls Tiktok thing.

Alongside the diminishing returns of “Fantastic Beasts” and the hype for the staggering Viking epic “The Northman,” this week’s news cycle brought news of potential cinephile goldmines, aka the Cannes Film Festival lineup. Already it looks like a vintage year, with new movies from David Cronenberg, Claire Denis, Cristian Mungiu, and Park Chan-wook.
Still, in terms of pure red-carpet optics, Cannes locked its ace-in-the-hole two years ago when it planned to screen “Top Gun: Maverick” out of competition at its canceled edition. At long last, Tom Cruise will walk the red carpet of the Lumiere Theatre for the first time since 1992, when he appeared for Ron Howard’s “Far and Away.” The Cannes launch (which follows a world premiere at CinemaCon) means even people for whom the pronunciation of “Cannes” is as mysterious as its program will catch a whiff of the media excitement around May 18.

This beguiling and disturbing film is full of secrets and definitely bears repeat watching, but just in case you need a little extra persuasion, this package includes a fantastic array of extras. It includes an in-depth audio commentary, with director Carlo Mirabella-Davis and producers Mollye Asher and Mynette Louie struggling to fit in everything they want to say, plus a selection of interviews looking at the film from the different perspectives of various members of the creative team. All of these are substantial, with Mirabella-Davis reflections on the film's inspirations particularly poignant. Editor Joe Murphy offers some fascinating insights into how the film was assembled (and what was left out), and composer Nathan Halpern places it in the context of other work he has done, such as his score for Chloé Zhao's The Rider.
In addition to this, there's 27 minutes of extra film: Mirabella-Davis' breakthrough short Knife Point,...

During a lively discussion about popular online review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, two critics and a movie producer were, well, about 50% fresh on sharing the critic’s microphone with an algorithm. On a panel moderated by TheWrap’s Diane Haithman, indie producer Mynette Louie said she has long been a fan of Rotten Tomatoes, joking, “Because most of my films are Certified Fresh, I love it, it’s great.” She also praised how Rt has “democratized” the critical playing field to include critics of color, as well as more female reviewers. However, Louie remained skeptical about a “binary approach” to assessing a movie’s quality. “I have a great respect for film criticism and nuance,” she said, lamenting that “nuance, in general, is missing from our world, thanks to Twitter and social media … Everything is kind of reduced to an algorithm nowadays.” Claudia Puig, a critic for Kpcc and president of L.

Megan Ellison, the CEO of Annapurna, slammed producer Scott Rudin in a tweet Wednesday for his “abusive, racist and sexist” behavior following an exposé that detailed some of the producer’s alleged treatment of his assistants and staff.
Ellison, who worked with Rudin as an executive producer on the 2010 film “True Grit,” said the piece published in THR on Wednesday “barely scratches the surface” of his behavior. She also compared the hesitation of people to speak out against Rudin to the Harvey Weinstein situation that kicked off the #MeToo movement.
“This piece barely scratches the surface of Scott Rudin’s abusive, racist, and sexist behavior. Similarly to Harvey, too many are afraid to speak out. I support and applaud those who did. There’s good reason to be afraid because he’s vindictive and has no qualms about lying,” Ellison wrote.

Virtual cinema platforms that sprung up in response to the challenges posed by the Covid-19 lockdowns are set to remain a part of the landscape after theaters and film festivals reopen.
That was the consensus of participants taking part at an IFFR Pro conference on the growing possibilities for film distribution at the Rotterdam Film Festival on Tuesday.
Wendy Lidell, senior VP at Kino Lorber, joined Eve Gabereau, founder of London-based distrib Modern Films, producer Mynette Louie (“Swallow”) and Jovan Marjanović, the Sarajevo Film Festival’s head of industry, for the talk.
Lidell said exhibs would continue the practice in view of the fact that so many theaters had already launched their own platforms.
Kino Lorber launched its Kino Marquee digital service last year in an effort to ensure the continuity of its own distribution business and provide a means of support for shuttered arthouse cinemas.

It didn’t take long for big studio filmmakers to push back when Warner Bros. announced on Dec. 3 it would debut its entire slate of 2021 movies concurrently in theaters and on HBO Max — the so-called “day-and-date” plan. Now leaders in the independent film community are stepping forward to say Warner’s approach — and even a hybrid release model by Disney — raises particular issues when it comes to their films. Art-house producers and distributors worry that the day-and-date approach will inevitably siphon attention away from their films in theaters — which already struggle for attention compared to megabudgeted blockbusters. And that having blockbuster films on streaming platforms make it harder to grab attention there too. “In the past, if independent films in their first window were day-and-date, they weren’t competing with ‘Wonder Woman’ at first window, they were competing with ‘Wonder Woman’ in a home video window,” Arianna Bocco, president of independent film distributor IFC Films,...

Carlo Mirabella-Davis's Swallow is showing exclusively on Mubi in many countries starting October 31, 2020.I am profoundly honored to be introducing my film, Swallow, to the viewers of Mubi’s iconic programming. Swallow follows a woman in a controlling marriage who has pica, the urge to eat dangerous objects. I think of the movie as a tiramisu of genres: body horror, dark comedy, and a domestic drama all rolled into one. Swallow is a film that will frighten you, make you laugh, and make you cry, hopefully fostering a psychologically cathartic experience. The film was inspired by my grandmother, a 1950s homemaker who, as a response to a difficult marriage, developed various rituals of control. She was an obsessive hand washer who would go through four bars of soap a day and 12 bottles of sanitizing alcohol a week. I think she was looking for order in a life she felt increasingly powerless in.

To honor the legacy of beloved filmmaker Lynn Shelton, Seattle’s Northwest Film Forum and Duplass Brothers Productions have today announced the launch of the Lynn Shelton “Of a Certain Age” Grant. The $25,000 unrestricted cash grant will be awarded each year to a U.S.-based woman or non-binary filmmaker, age 39 or older, who has yet to direct a narrative feature.
Shelton, who passed away in May, was among the leading voices of American independent film, working on all sides of the camera on such films as “Humpday,” “Your Sister’s Sister,” “Outside In,” and “Sword of Trust.” Like the filmmakers the grant is intended to help, Shelton didn’t direct her own first feature (“We Go Way Back”) until she was 39. In the 15 years that followed, Shelton built a prolific and respected canon of both feature and television work.

A grant fund has been set up in honor of the late “Humpday” filmmaker Lynn Shelton that will provide a $25,000 unrestricted cash grant to U.S. based women and nonbinary filmmakers, age 39 or older, who have yet to direct a narrative feature.

“This grant seeks to reinforce that great filmmakers can emerge at any age, and to elevate the voices of a segment of the filmmaking community who have precious few resources dedicated to supporting them yet plenty of stories to tell,” Megan Griffiths, Shelton’s longtime friend and collaborator who is working in her capacity as a member of the board of Northwest Film Forum to help establish the grant, said in a statement. “Lynn was 39 when I met her on her first feature,...

IFC Films is set to release Carlo Mirabella-Davis’ haunting psychological drama Swallow into select theaters and onto VOD and various digital platforms this Friday. Starring Haley Bennett, the film is centered around a housewife named Hunter who seemingly has it all, but after she begins to exhibit unseemly behavior in the eyes of her husband and his family, Hunter begins to reclaim aspects of her life in very unconventional ways.
Daily Dead recently spoke with Mirabella-Davis about Swallow, and he discussed how his grandmother inspired him to write this story about a woman struggling with Pica and how he convinced Bennett to take on the role of Hunter in the first place. The up-and-coming filmmaker also talked about the steps he took to subvert his male gaze while working on Swallow, the film’s visual style, and more.

Haley Bennett was 19 when she made her film debut as pop star Cora Corman in 2007’s “Music and Lyrics.” About nine years later, after appearing in about a dozen more movies, she was hailed as Hollywood’s next big starlet for her starring role opposite Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt in the 2016 remake of “The Magnificent Seven” and for her work as the mysterious Megan in “The Girl on the Train,” the adaptation of the novel of the same name.
Despite the success and the spotlight, the now-32-year-old actor says she never felt particularly welcome in the full filmmaking process until “Swallow,” her new drama from first-time feature film writer-director Carlo Mirabella-Davis, in theaters March 6. Not only does Bennett star in the movie, but the indie also marks her producing debut.

IFC Films has shared a new clip from their highly anticipated film “Swallow” which is already generating a ton of buzz across the film festival circuit and early critical praise. On the surface, Hunter (Haley Bennett) appears to have it all. A newly pregnant housewife, she seems content to spend her time tending to an immaculate home and doting on her Ken-doll husband, Richie (Austin Stowell). However, as the pressure to meet her controlling in-laws and husband’s rigid expectations mounts, cracks begin to appear in her carefully created facade. Hunter develops a dangerous habit, and a dark secret from her past seeps out in the form of a disorder called pica – a condition that has her compulsively swallowing inedible, and oftentimes life-threatening, objects. A provocative and squirm-inducing psychological thriller, Swallow follows one woman’s unraveling as she struggles to reclaim independence in the face of an oppressive system by whatever means possible.
