When you’re an independent filmmaker, there are a few different ways of working within the TV/streaming space. You could be a TV repairman (of any gender!) or work for the cable company. Those are pretty good. But! If you’re reading this blog, chances are your ambitions run a little more toward creating the content actually populating these devices and platforms. In that case, you could A) create a brand-new series and become its ruthless, dictatorial showrunner, or B) step into an already-existing series as the director of an individual episode.
For the former, there’s always our Episodic Lab. But for the latter, there’s the Film Independent Episodic Directing Intensive–where in just three whirlwind days, a diverse cross-section of veteran directors, showrunners, actors, executives and cinematographers provide a heavy-duty brain dump to six up-and-coming filmmakers, sharing their experiences and knowledge of the episodic directing landscape.

Exclusive: National Geographic is wading into one of psychology’s most debated studies from the past 50 years. The network has given a green light to The Stanford Prison Experiment: Unlocking The Truth (wt), a three-part docuseries from Juliette Eisner, Alex Braverman and Muck Media, the producers behind Nat Geo’s Emmy-nominated Trafficked: Underworlds with Mariana van Zeller.
Led by Stanford psychology professor Dr. Phillip Zimbardo, the six-day Stanford Prison Experiment was Zimbardo’s attempt to understand the power of situation over human behavior. In 1971, Zimbardo paid two dozen college-aged participants to live in a mock prison, observing how randomly assigned “prisoner” and “guard” roles influenced behavior. What started out as a self-contained university experiment turned into a media spectacle that captured the imagination and attention of the world, defining our understanding of human nature and forever changing the course of psychology.

Movies and TV shows regularly come and go from streaming services; we all know this, but the trend has taken a disturbing turn in the past year, with content being pulled, sometimes permanently, just to save a few bucks. I know, it’s just business, but for the hundreds of creatives who have had their hard-work yanked from existence, it hurts. Disney+ has taken things to a new level as they have pulled Crater from the service, a movie which was released on May 12th… less than two months ago.
There’s no official word on why Crater was removed from Disney+, but The Independent believes that it’s “an attempt to cut costs relating to licencing deals.” The decision has sparked an outcry on social media, with some wondering why they’re paying for the service that can’t even keep their own content.

The biggest strength of Crater has to be its final ten minutes, which feel like savoring a great dessert after what was a decent meal at best. To a great extent, it feels like a silly attempt at a Stranger Things recreation in a different setting, especially the way the five main characters are written. Sure, kids are all the same, but these five are an awful lot like Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas, and Max. There is no Eleven, though, and no demogorgon mind flayer stuff, either. For a movie that is set entirely on the moon, the villains here are rather wordly: class struggle, capitalism, and the exploitation of the poor.
But seamlessly integrating all these in the narrative of a Disney movie, whose target audience is mainly kids and teenagers, is a herculean task. And the movie couldn’t exactly pull off Oscar Martinez explaining “what does surplus...

A bunch of nosy kids get into trouble looking for things they shouldn’t be in Disney’s latest sci-fi adventure film Crater. Directed by Kyle Patrick Alvarez and written by John Griffin, the film follows five friends as they travel to a moon crater to find treasure in the 23rd century.
The film starts with Caleb (Isaiah Russll-Bailey), Addison (Mckenna Grace), Dylan (Billy Barratt), Borney (Orson Hong), and Marcus (Thomas James Boyce III) trying to hijack a space rover in the middle of a lockdown due to an oncoming meteor shower. As the group argues why their plan isn’t working, Caleb thinks about how his deceased father, Michael (played by Scott Mescudi). The wonders are small but mighty enough in “Crater,” a sincere Disney+ adventure from “Stranger Things” producer Shawn Levy, featuring some of that Netflix series’ pains about coming-of-age. For all that’s knowingly familiar in this crowd-pleaser, “Crater” wins out with craftiness and a mature heart, as director Kyle Patrick Alvarez guides a young cast of rising stars through that great unknown that’s getting older.

Within the first four minutes of Disney+ Original film “Crater,” we already have a cavalcade of movie tropes to contend with: dead parents, spaceships, and a 72-hour ticking clock for one newly-orphaned tween to say farewell to his friend group. At least we know Disney hasn’t shied away from its classic storylines.
Part “Guardians of the Galaxy” and part “Goonies” with a dash of “Outer Banks,” “Crater” centers on Caleb Channing (a well-cast Isaiah Russell-Bailey), who was raised on a lunar mining colony by his single dad (Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi). After the death of his father, Caleb becomes a ward of the state, poised to reap the “death benefits” from his father’s work contract with the colony. As part of said benefits, Caleb is supposed to be put in a cryosleep and transported to distant planet Omega, which takes 75 years to reach.

Some straight-to-streaming offerings inspire viewers to bemoan the movie’s fate, wishing it had received a proper theatrical release — to be seen the way movies are meant to be seen, and by the widest audience possible. “Crater” isn’t one of those, but neither is this Disney+ original mere algorithm-created dross. Kyle Patrick Alvarez’s lunar adventure follows five young friends as they hijack a rover to visit an enigmatic crater for one last hurrah before one of them leaves the moon forever. It’s sci-fi informed by a Gen-z sensibility, with a particular focus on those Zoomers who can’t imagine a bright future on the planet they actually inhabit — an ever-expanding demographic, one imagines.

Penn Badgley’s production company Ninth Mode and producer Raven Tahzib have acquired the rights to the David Sedaris short story “Jamboree,” in order to develop it into a feature film. “Jamboree” was part of Sedaris’ 1994 book “Barrel Fever,” his first published collection of short stories and essays. In the story, a 16-year-old boy who lives in his older sister’s garage ends up being the caretaker of her baby.
“Jamboree” would be only the second time that Sedaris’ work has been adapted for film: 2013’s “C.O.G.,” from Kyle Patrick Alvarez, was based on an essay from the 1997 collection “Naked.”
Badgley recently wrapped the fourth season of “You,” which will be released on Netflix in two parts next year: The first batch of episodes will premiere on Feb. 10, with the rest dropping a month later, on March 10.

On the first season of Homecoming, director Sam Esmail set a lofty template with a notably lengthy one-take sequence in the cinematic tradition of Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles and Robert Altman. For the distinctly more expansive second season of the Amazon series, director Kyle Patrick Alvarez picked up the baton, staging a complicated and mesmerizing single-shot scene for the second episode in which amnesiac "Jackie" (Janelle Monáe), desperate to uncover her own identity and real name, follows clues leading to the home of Audrey Temple (Hong Chau), one of the few returning characters from the previous season.

Stepping onto the set of Amazon Prime Video’s “Homecoming” to direct all seven episodes of the second season, Kyle Patrick Alvarez had a big task at hand. The first season had been entirely helmed by executive producer Sam Esmail, who created a very specific visual look for the show, including the use of long, tracking oners and different aspect ratios to denote different time periods within the story. And although the second season started with a central new character in Janelle Monáe’s Jackie (née Alex), Alvarez did not want to completely change the vibe of the show.
How does your personal aesthetic align with the shot style of “Homecoming”?

The first season of Homecoming was deliberately claustrophobic, set largely in the Homecoming Transitional Support Center with nods to All the President’s Men and The Parallax View. Season 2 of the Amazon Prime Video drama is a little bit less Alan Pakula and a little more Brian De Palma, according to director/executive producer Kyle Patrick Alvarez.
“One of the draws to me was, having loved Season 1 so much, and having loved Sam [Esmail]’s aesthetic approach, the challenge was how do we translate that feeling when so much of that feeling was the Homecoming facility set,” Alvarez said during Deadline’s Contenders Television virtual event. “That was so meticulously designed to fit that tone, but now we’re going to be in forests and lakes so we have to re-conceive how to technically approach the scenes so that it felt like Homecoming but on a larger canvas. “Homecoming” ends its second season much less ambiguously than the Sam Esmail-directed freshman run. And in much, much deadlier fashion, thanks to Walter Cruz (Stephan James).
It turns out Cruz wasn’t the mellowed out, seemingly-happy guy that Heidi Bergman (Julia Roberts) believed him to be when she caught up with him in that diner three years after he was experimented on at the Homecoming facility. It turns out, according to director Kyle Patrick Alvarez, that having parts of your mind wiped has some long-term consequences, especially when you find out who is responsible.
“I always saw and felt Heidi understood that Walter had become this idealistic version of himself. That he was here, he was in his happy place in a way,” Alvarez told TheWrap. “I think what the season does, it says ‘No,...

(The following story contains spoilers for the second season of Amazon’s “Homecoming”)
Despite Amazon leaving the door open, Julia Roberts does not show up during the second season of “Homecoming,” which debuted on Friday. However, there was one brief window where Roberts’ Heidi Bergman could have made an appearance.
But it would have been a literal background role for Roberts, jokes Kyle Patrick Alvarez, who took over as director this season from Sam Esmail.
Toward the end of the third episode, the show picks up Walter Cruz’s (Stephan James) story at the exact place it left off in the Season 1 finale, where Heidi catches up with him in a diner. His first words, “Just a half a day left,” were also the last words he said at the end of last season, before showing him walking out of the diner. There’s a scene where the diner is in the background,...

There’s very little that can be said about “Homecoming” Season 2 without venturing into spoiler territory, so let’s start with this: Anyone who loved the ambiguous ending of Amazon Prime’s first season, especially if you were taken by the profound connection between Walter Cruz (Stephan James) and Heidi Bergman (Julia Roberts), should enter into Season 2 with caution. It’s not that podcast creators and series showrunners Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg provide a definitive answer as to what or who Walter remembers after his “treatment” at the Homecoming facility (though they kinda do), or even that they’re dismissive toward that poignant final moment so beautifully composed by Season 1 director Sam Esmail — far from it.
Everyone involved in crafting Season 2, including new full-time director Kyle Patrick Alvarez (“The Stanford Prison Experiment”), seems hellbent on telling a story that exists on the periphery of what came before. That helps...

It’s one thing for an actor to replace a superstar in the second season of a TV series. For Amazon Prime’s “Homecoming” that meant Janelle Monae effectively needing to fill the shoes of one of the few real movie stars left in the world, Julia Roberts. It’s another thing for a filmmaker to replace the original director who brought a very distinctive style to the first season. That was the task for Kyle Patrick Alvarez.

Homecoming was one of my favorite shows of 2018. It made my Top Ten List for 2018.
It was quirky and original (even if based off of a popular podcast), and you could tell Sam Esmail poured his heart into the venture.
Julia Roberts starred (and executive produced), turning in one of her best performances to date.
Fast-forward to 2020 and the release of Homecoming Season 2.
I knew it would look different because Roberts would no longer lead (although she's still executive producing), and Esmail, while still on board, would no longer direct.
But the change is so significant as a result of their diminished roles that there's not much story to tell.
Season 2 centers around a new character named Alex (or Jackie), played by Janelle Monáe, who appears in a rowboat -- much like the protagonist in the original Friday the 13th movie -- with a confused look on her face.

It’s been a particular frustration of this era of TV to watch shows that demanded no amplification — self-contained limited series that ended elegantly — contort themselves into new and unnatural shapes to keep the applause going. The key example of this so far has been “Big Little Lies,” a show that made a crystalline one-season-long case for the power of collaboration and friendship, then fractured its central group in season 2 simply for conflict’s sake.
But the second outing of “Big Little Lies,” at least, retained key talent in front of and behind the camera, ensuring some familiar pleasures remained. Not so with Amazon’s “Homecoming,” whose superlative first season was fueled both by the chemistry between Julia Roberts and Stephan James and by Sam Esmail’s direction, with its self-conscious debts to Hitchcock. (The something-more-than-homage was forgivable in part because of the sheer panache with which Esmail carried it off.

Seen any good movies lately? Chances are you haven’t, at least not in theaters. But as our new stay-at-home normal stretches out into another month, some films once destined for the multiplex have started to show up in other locations. Remember that comedy that reunites Kumail Nanjiani with Michael Showalter, the director of The Big Sick, and co-stars Insecure‘s Issa Rae? That’s coming to a home theater near you in May. Ditto a controversial documentary about sexual harassment in the music industry and the final installment of...

Homecoming season 2 is on the way for another year of mystery and pelicans.
Homecoming is based on a podcast of the same name and is produced by Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail through his Anonymous Content production label. Season 1 of the show told the story of the Homecoming Transitional Support Center, a private facility working to treat veterans arriving home from war (and score a fat government contract in the process). Through caseworker Heidi Bergman’s interviews and interactions with young veteran Walter Cruz (Stephan James), it is slowly revealed that Homecoming’s mission seems more nefarious than previously realized.
Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg will continue on as co-showrunners for Homecoming season 2. Kyle Patrick Alvarez will direct all episodes.
At first glance Homecoming Season 1 appeared to tell a very complete story, rendering any future seasons unnecessary. But a second season has always been in the cards for Homecoming. Amazon...

Anthology series are the name of the game with scripted television at the moment. It’s far easier to start fresh and retain the spirit of a series than continue a story that might have already run its course. Such is the case with Amazon Prime Video’s series “Homecoming.” The show, an adaptation of the podcast of the same name, saw Julia Roberts engage in a Hitchcockian tale of paranoia and government corruption during its first season.
Now, the first teaser for Season 2 shows us the sense of unease remains even if we aren’t clear on what the story is, exactly. Amazon has dropped a new teaser for Season 2 of “Homecoming,” and it opens to find star Janelle Monáe alone in a rowboat in the middle of a lake — with no oars.
In the new season, which premieres May 22, Monáe’s character has no memory of how she wound up in the middle of a lake — or even who she is. “Her ensuing search for identity will lead her into the heart of the Geist Group, the unconventional wellness company behind the Homecoming Initiative,” according to Amazon.
Stephan James reprises his role as Walter Cruz, “who is trying to build a new life following the traumas of war and the Homecoming Initiative, when he begins to realize that there’s an even more insidious version of the program underway — if only he can remember,” Amazon adds.

Janelle Monáe is one of the busiest entertainers working today. But the Grammy-winning artist said that getting the chance to star in the Amazon series “Homecoming” was an opportunity worth prioritizing.
“When I saw Season 1 and I listened to the podcast, I was a fan. When I had the opportunity to be a part of the show, I said, ‘Hell yeah!’ I moved my schedule around and I made it happen,” Monáe said at Tuesday’s Television Critics Association press tour. “It’s just been an honor to join this family and to push myself as an artist to give the best performance that I possibly can.”

The second season of Amazon drama Homecoming will be more expansive than the first with much of the action taking place outside of the Homecoming Transitional Support Center.
The cast and crew of the psychological thriller, including new star Janelle Monáe, talked up the differences between season one of the show, which starred Julia Roberts, and the forthcoming season, which airs later this spring, at the Winter TCA press tour.
In the second season, Monáe’s character wakes in a rowboat adrift a lake, with no memory of how she got there — or even who she is. Her ensuing search for identity will lead her into the heart of the Geist Group, the unconventional wellness company behind the Homecoming Initiative.
Co-creator and exec producer Eli Horowitz admitted that the team, which also includes co-creator Michael Bloomberg, Kyle Patrick Alvarez and exec producer Sam Esmail learned a number of lessons between the two seasons.

Janelle Monáe doesn’t “live [her] life in a binary way.” Therefore, she doesn’t look at her body of work as being a musician first and an actor second, or vice versa. Instead, she just wants to “tell stories that need to be told,” she said at the Television Critics Assn. press tour panel for her upcoming season of “Homecoming” on Amazon Prime Video.
“I consider myself a storyteller and when I saw Season 1 and I listened to the podcast, I was a fan,” Monáe said of her new gig. “I’ve always tried to get rid of all of those things — any labels — and work on my journey, wherever that may be. I do feel like I am an experience, I am on self-discovery, and I just want to continue to show love to everyone who continues to live outside of the binary.”

Amazon is adding another new character for the second season of “Homecoming,” casting Chris Cooper as the head of The Geist Group, the shadowy conglomerate backing the Homecoming Transitional Support Center that’s at the center of the series.
Cooper will play Leonard Geist, an eccentric botanist, more at home in his greenhouse than in the boardrooms of the company he created. He joins previously announced “Homecoming” season two stars Janelle Monáe, Stephan James, and Hong Chau. The later two are returning from Season 1.
Geist Group was the company backing the Homecoming project, which ends up developing an experimental drug that “cures” veterans of Ptsd by physically erasing painful memories. While it’s initially stated that its purpose is to help veterans transition back to civilian life, the twist is that Geist is doing this in order to send them back out into the field.

Last year, Amazon Prime Video had Oscar-winning actress Julia Roberts headlining her first major TV work with “Homecoming.” The psychological drama might not have been the awards beast that everyone was anticipating, but the series was well-received and apparently a hit for the streaming service. However, when the series was renewed for Season 2, it was clear that major changes were coming, as both Roberts and the director of the entire first season, Sam Esmail, were departing.

Stephan James and Hong Chau are coming back for more, as far as “Homecoming” is concerned.
