Christopher Nolan is getting a big endorsement for Oppenheimer from Paul Schrader who is praising his latest film.
In a post on Facebook, the Taxi Driver screenwriter and American Gigolo director shared a photo alongside Nolan giving high marks to the movie about the atomic bomb.
“Oppenheimer. The best, most important film of this century,” Schrader wrote. “If you see one film in cinemas this year it should be Oppenheimer. I’m not a Nolan groupie but this one blows the doors off the hinges.”
Oppenheimer has already been getting positive reactions from film critics following its multiple screenings.
The film stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist credited as the “father of the atomic bomb.” The film is directed and written by Nolan and is based on “American Prometheus” by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin.

Christopher Nolan kicked off Universal’s CinemaCon presentation today in Las Vegas, taking the stage to talk about his thriller Oppenheimer, which releases in July. Cillian Murphy stars as the titular J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist whose work on the Manhattan Project led to the creation of the atomic bomb.
“I’m here with a story in the story of J Robert Oppenheimer,” Nolan said. “I know of no more dramatic tale with higher stakes, twists and turns and ethical dilemmas. … The finest minds in the country were in a desperate race against the Nazis to harness the power of the atom in World War II. Picture those same minds realizing the possibility that they might set fire to the entire world, yet they went ahead and pushed the button. I wanted to be there and see what that might be like.”

Back in October 2019, before the pandemic, we brought you news about American Civil War movie Freedom’s Path.
The feature, which charts the friendship between a Union soldier and a runaway slave who is helping facilitate the Underground Railroad, stars Ewen Bremner (Trainspotting), Rj Cyler (Me And Earl And The Dying Girl) and Gerran Howell (Catch 22). Post-production has just wrapped.
As it turned out, the project would mark the final stops on the journey of two veteran actors who died while the movie was in post-production: Thomas Jefferson Byrd, a frequent Spike Lee collaborator, and New Orleans native Carol Sutton, both of whom had supporting roles.
Both actors died in sad circumstances. Tony-nominee Byrd was murdered in Atlanta and Sutton died of complications from Covid.
Today, the production has chosen to release two images of the admired actors in their final film, marking the first official stills from the movie.

"There are times vengeance is all we have." Goldwyn Films has released an official US trailer for film titled Measure for Measure, a contemporary update of Shakespeare's play of the same name. This premiered last year at the Melbourne and Busan Film Festivals. An unlikely love ignites between a modern Muslim girl and a local musician amongst the background of racial tension, amphetamines and gang culture in the city's notorious housing estate. Inspired by the play and influenced by the gritty realism of films like Amores Perros, the social conscience of Fish Tank, and dynamic aesthetic of Un Prophete, Measure for Measure questions the notion of justice, the ability for redemption, and examines the idea that "we can never escape our true nature or where we are from despite our attempts." The film stars Daniel Henshall, Harrison Gilbertson, Megan Smart, Mark Leonard Winter, and the great Hugo Weaving. Looks damn good.

While some distributors are cutting back, Umbrella Entertainment plans to release approximately 18 titles in cinemas this year, up from 14 in 2019.
The distributor has high hopes for its Australian acquisitions which run the gamut of genres from drama, horror and Western to sci-fi.
“We’re passionate about overcoming the cultural cringe that Australian audiences still have a tendency to display and are dedicated to fostering new Australian talent,” Umbrella head of acquisitions Ari Harrison tells If.
“As a small, close-knit team, we aim to concentrate our efforts on films that we love and can support from the ground up. We want to work hand-in-hand with the filmmakers with the goal of getting their film ‘out there’ so that it finds its audience.
“Essentially we aim to ensure that the films we acquire have the capacity for national theatrical success in Australia and New Zealand, with potential for continued growth via their ancillary platforms.

Based on a story by Stephen King and Joe Hill, In the Tall Grass doesn’t really grow on you.

Legendary horror novelist Stephen King and his son, the acclaimed horror and comic book author Joe Hill, have collaborated twice on the page, each time coming up with something memorably creepy and squarely in what one could probably call the family tradition. The second of those two tales, “In the Tall Grass,” has now been made into a feature-length film for Netflix by director and writer Vincenzo Natali, the Canadian director who first got on the map in 1997 with the mind-twisting Cube.
Cube was about six random people trapped in a massive, labyrinthine structure for reasons unknown who must solve its deadly mysteries to escape. So on paper it kind of makes sense that he would adapt a story about another half dozen characters caught in another eerie maze-like scenario,...

Given the strength of its pedigree and the intrigue of its premise, . Adapted from a recent piece of short fiction that Stephen King and his son Joe Hill co-wrote for Esquire Magazine, the film opens by introducing us to another of the shifting nightmare spaces that Natali first explored so effectively in 1997’s “Cube.” This time around the location isn’t an inescapable prison full of horrifying death traps, but rather a deep and disorienting field of — you guessed it — tall grass that’s located somewhere in the American Midwest (where exactly in the American Midwest is something of a plot point in a movie that only has something of a plot).
If that sounds like a less frightening scenario than just about anything the director has started with before, that’s because it is, but viewers familiar with the source material know that evil loves to disguise itself in the mundane.

The latest Stephen King adaptation is the horror thriller In the Tall Grass. Based on King and Joe Hill's 2012 novella, this film takes place in a rural field. Here, several people lose themselves in a supernatural trap. In the Tall Grass has been shot by director Vincenzo Natali. Shot in Toronto, Netflix has just released the first trailer for the film, which stars: Patrick and Rachel Wilson, Harrison Gilbertson and Laysla De Oliveira. The trailer is a good one and can be viewed below. Natali spoke about this project back in 2015, during the film's early production. The director said of the film and its thrills: "who would think that grass could be frightening. Trust Stephen King and Joe Hill to find a way. They have transformed an otherwise innocuous Kansas field into a stage for some of the most disturbing horror fiction (Uhm)." There are no exits, in the film's first trailer.

The year of Stephen King continues. After Pet Sematary and It Chapter Two and before Doctor Sleep, another one of his adaptations will be arriving–this time on Netflix. In the Tall Grass, based on the 2012 novella by King and his son Joe Hill, is written and directed by Vincenzo Natali. Ahead of a Fantastic Fest premiere, Netflix has now unveiled the first trailer and poster.
The story centers on a group who enter a large field to rescue a boy only to find more sinister forces at work. With touches of the disorientation found in Annihilation and no shortage of frightening imagery from the twisted mind of Natali, hopefully this is a horror stand-out this fall. Starring Harrison Gilbertson, Laysla De Oliveira, Avery Whitted, Will Buie Jr., Rachel Wilson, and Patrick Wilson, see the trailer and poster below.

Stephen King’s very good year is still in full swing. The master of horror’s oeuvre has been mined for countless screen adaptations over the years, to varying degrees of success. But these days, with horror more popular than ever, anything with King’s name on it is the closest thing to a surefire success Hollywood has. This month saw the release of “It: Chapter Two,” the sequel to last year’s surprise blockbuster “It.” November brings rising horror star Mike Flanagan’s “Doctor Sleep,” a sequel to “The Shining” which pulls from the eponymous 2013 King novel and sets Ewan McGregor as a grown-up Danny Torrance.

"You think this was just chance? We're all here for a reason." Netflix has launched an official trailer for the indie horror thriller In the Tall Grass, adapted from the novella by Stephen King and Joe Hill. Another new Stephen King adaptation this year! After hearing a young boy’s cry for help, a sister and brother venture into a vast field of tall grass in Kansas but soon discover there may be no way out... and that something evil lurks within. This is the latest from the director of Cube and Splice, Vincenzo Natali, and it looks like he's the perfect person for this since it seems like a trippy mess-with-your-mind contained thriller. All the shots of everyone in the grass are super eerie, perfect atmosphere. Starring Harrison Gilbertson, Laysla De Oliveira, Avery Whitted, Will Buie Jr., Rachel Wilson, and Patrick Wilson. It’s just a field, right? That’s the entire premise to “In the Tall Grass,” a horror movie based on a Stephen King novella in which a group of people get lost in a massive, dense, grassy prairie and find themselves unable to escape.
King wrote the novella originally published in two parts in Esquire magazine in 2012 along with his son, Joe Hill. It’s the story of two inseparable siblings who hear the cries of a young boy lost within a tall field of grass. But when they venture in to rescue him, they find themselves ensnared by a sinister force that quickly disorients and separates them.
In the trailer for “In the Tall Grass,” we see the grass slicing into their ankles and the mud trapping them where they stand. And that little boy isn’t all he seems either.

An all-Stephen King edition of the Hero Nation this week…
It’s good to be the King. The human content machine that is Stephen King continues to churn out stories and characters that scare up huge success as screen entertainment. In fact, King is casting a bigger shadow than ever (check out the long list of upcoming project below) but that’s no surprise to Frank Darabont, the three-time Oscar nominee who remains one of King’s most ardent fans in Hollywood.
“The real underlying thing is a secret superpower, but now not-so-secret, is he always really makes you care about the characters,” Darabont said. “You really become invested and that’s a tremendous skill for a writer to have and I don’t think anybody does it quite as well as Stephen does.”
Darabont’s masterpiece, The Shawshank Redemption, returns to 700 theaters at the end of the month to mark the film’s 20th anniversary. Based on King’s novel about wrongly convicted inmate’s transformation behind bars, the movie represents only part of Darabont’s interaction’s with King material. There was also The Green Mile and The Mist.
How did Darabont become one of King’s men in Hollywood? Here’s how he recounts the story:
“I was aware of Stephen King because of the movie Carrie, which I loved, but hadn’t really gotten into his actual books yet, not until The Shining. Which is kind of a funny story because you know, I was in high school then when The Shining came out and it was sent to me by mistake from the book club because I neglected because I was a flaky teenager, I neglected to send the card back. I don’t know if you remember the book club, how that used to work, they would have their main selection and they would send you a notice about what the next book is, right, and if you didn’t want it delivered you had to mail the card back, you know, to prevent them from shipping it and I forgot to do that, and usually I did have to send the card back because even though I loved to read, I still do, I seldom had the money to actually buy a book.”
Darabont continued: “So, one day the book arrives in the mail, I pull it out, and it’s The Shining by some guy named Stephen King — Stefan, as I thought it was pronounced at first, and I thought, ‘Aww, dog-gone it, I forgot to send the card back, I’m going to have to, you know, put it back in the box and send it back to them with a note saying I’m sorry, but I can’t afford to buy this book right now.’ I flipped the book open as I was about to put it back in the box, but my eyes landed on the paragraph where the dead woman sits up in the bathtub, and scares the hell out of Danny Torrance, and I froze and I thought, ‘Ooh, that’s really right up my alley, I’ve got to read this book.’ So, I sat down and read it, and of course I found the money to actually pay for it, and I think I got it from my mom, I probably wrangled it out of her because I read that book in a white heat, and it’s one of the rare times I got to the end of the book and I flipped back to the first page and read it a second time. That’s how much that book had an impact on me. The writing was just of a caliber that blew my mind. It’s still one of the greatest novels in the genre, I think, written in the 20th Century.”
And no, the postmark on the book club parcel wasn’t from the Overlook Hotel in Colorado. King has written more than 60 bestsellers at this point but its some of his earliest works that are connecting with viewers in new adaptations right now Here’s a look at some of the many King projects on the way now.
It (New Line Cinema/Warner Bros) New Line and director Andy Muschietti brought back Pennywise the Dancing Clown after the first film finished its theatrical run in 2017 as the highest-grossing horror release in history. The sequel was No. 1 for the second weekend in a row and has gone north of $322 million in global box office already.
Doctor Sleep (Warner Bros) Director Mike Flanagan’s sequel to The Shining (1980) opens Nov. 8 and stars Ewan McGregor as Danny Torrance, the grown-up survivor of the Overlook Hotel massacre. The movie is an adaptation of the namesake novel by King which was released in 2013.
In the Tall Grass (Netflix) premieres on the streaming service on Oct. 4. Directed by Vincenzo Natali (Splice), the film adapts the horror novella written by King and his son, Joe Hill, and stars youngsters Laysla De Oliveira and Avery Whitted and also features Patrick Wilson, Rachel Wilson, and Harrison Gilbertson. In the Tall Grass was first published in 2012 in Esquire magazine.
The Stand (CBS All Access) True Blood and Big Little Lies star Alexander Skarsgard was just cast as Randall Flagg. The ensemble also features James Marsden, Whoopi Goldberg, Amber Heard, Greg Kinnear, and Marilyn Manson. Created by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars), the 10-episode premiere season will be next year on the CBS subscription streaming site.
Castle Rock (Hulu) is returning for Season 2 on Oct. 23 and a new trailer was just released. In it, Lizzy Caplan portrays budding psychopath Annie Wilkes, the nurse from Misery, who has a prescription for trouble as she arrives in the small town of Castle Rock, which is where characters from different King novels meet in a shared universe. The series also stars Tim Robbins, Paul Sparks, Yusra Warsama, Barkhad Abdi, Elsie Fisher, and Matthew Alan.
Mr Mercedes (AT&T Audience Network) Season 3 is now underway for the Tuesday night series from executive producer David E. Kelley. Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges) stars as a grizzled detective taunted out of retirement by a serial killer.

The seven films include:
Director John Sheedy’s H is for Happiness, which as previously announced, will form the festival’s Family Gala. Megan Hajjar in ‘M4M’
Since graduating from Waapa in 2016 Megan Hajjar has built an impressive resume with roles in Breath, Love Child, The Secret Daughter, Harrow and the upcoming movies M4M and The Naked Wanderer.
You may not recognise the name because, until recently, she was known as Megan Smart. The actor has decided to use Hajjar, her mother’s maiden name, to more closely identify with her Lebanese heritage.
“I wasn’t being considered for some Middle Eastern roles because the producers did not recognise my heritage,” she tells If.
While she does play a Lebanese woman in Paul Ireland’s M4M, she mostly portrays characters whose nationality is incidental. For example, she had fun playing a serial killer named Charlotte in the ABC/Hoodlum Entertainment’s Harrow and troublemaker Anna Hennessy in Screentime/Seven’s The Secret Daughter.

Standards are pretty high for horror movies in 2019. Despite what some mainstream movie websites might tell you, there have been many, many, great horrors in the last five years. Every year there seems to be more original and fantastic films. So it’s great to watch something like Look Away with no idea what it is about and no expectations; because more often than not, I’m impressed.
Look Away is one of those clever films that clearly has plenty of influences and it wears those influences on its sleeve but still manages to feel very fresh. Those influences mainly coming of age movies, from Carrie to Ginger Snaps to Let The Right One In – you can probably see the link. There...

After his wife is killed during a brutal mugging that also leaves him paralyzed, Grey Trace is approached by a billionaire inventor with an experimental cure that will “upgrade” his body. The cure–an Artificial Intelligence implant called Stem–gives Grey physical abilities beyond anything experienced, and the ability to relentlessly claim vengeance against those who murdered his wife and left him for dead…
Writer/director, and regular James Wan collaborator, Leigh Whannell puts the reigns of horror on hold and surprisingly turns his attention to the action genre with the effective, intellectual and engaging Upgrade.
This fast-paced, inventive, sci-fi thrill-ride, swirling together RoboCop, Death Wish and The Terminator and numerous Cronenberg body horror influences, is set in the near future, where technology controls nearly all aspects of life. But when self-identified technophobe...

While Look Away might dive into a lot of teenage-minded subjects, the themes of isolation and insecurity at the center of the psychological thriller’s narrative are easily relatable to anyone at any age. Starring India Eisley as the film’s protagonist Maria, we watch as the awkward and overly shy teen grapples with her identity when she decides to let her doppelgänger take control of her life, which ends up resulting in some tragic circumstances.
Written and directed by Assaf Bernstein, Look Away also stars Jason Isaacs, Mira Sorvino, Penelope Mitchell, and Harrison Gilbertson, and it arrives in limited theaters this Friday, courtesy of Vertical Entertainment.
Earlier this week, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with Bernstein, as well as with co-stars Eisley and Isaacs, about working together on Look Away as well as how the film’s story taps into the everyday isolation most of us feel...

Damian Hill and Ty Perham in ‘West of Sunshine.’
Shooting of M4M began in Melbourne on Monday as the cast and crew regrouped following the death on September 22 of Damian Hill, who co-wrote the crime drama/romance with the director Paul Ireland.
Ireland has dedicated the film inspired by Shakespeare’s ‘Measure for Measure’ to Hill, his best mate who was to co-produce and play Angelo, a character the director described as a fallen angel.
“After Dame died we got together and decided the best thing to do is carry on and make this for Dame,” says Ireland, who first collaborated with the actor/producer/writer in Pawno in 2015.
“Everyone has been amazing and very stoic. Dame and I were like a married couple. We worked together every day. He was so humble, a beautiful person. I feel like I have lost a part of me, but I’m determined to get through this.

"Why are you doing this!?" Vertical Entertainment has released an official trailer for a horror thriller film titled Look Away, the latest feature from director Assaf Bernstein (of The Debt). The twisty, not-so-clever concept involves a disconnected, insecure high school teen who switches places with her "supportive, but evil, twin that she discovers in the mirror's reflection." Who then acts out on other impulses and feelings. Look Away stars India Eisley as Maria and "Airam", as well as Jason Isaacs, Mira Sorvino, Harrison Gilbertson, Penelope Mitchell, Adam Hurtig, and Kristen Harris. Looks like it will all play out exactly as expected, of course she's going to learn her lesson. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Assaf Bernstein's Look Away, direct from YouTube: A lonely 18-year-old high schooler named Maria (India Eisley) opens up to her reflection because of the lack of support she has from family and her peers.

The cause of death was not immediately reported and may not be confirmed until the police file a report for the coroner.
Known to his friends as Dame, today he was due to start shooting M4M, an unlikely love story set against the background of drugs, racial intolerance and crime in Melbourne, which stars Hugo Weaving, directed by Ireland and co-written and produced by Hill and Ireland.
