Sci-fi adventure 2067 has proven to be a standout among local audiences, with Netflix revealing Seth Larney’s film has spent the most days as the most popular movie in the country since the streaming platform added ranking lists to the service.
Starring Kodi Smit-McPhee (X-Men: Apocalypse), Ryan Kwanten (True Blood), and Deborah Mailman (The Sapphires), 2067 is set in a not-too-distant future, where Earth has been ravaged by climate change and humanity is forced to live on artificial oxygen.
When survival is threatened by a fatal “oxygen sickness”, the only hope for a cure comes in the form of a message from the future: Send Ethan Whyte. Suddenly Ethan (Smit-McPhee), an underground tunnel worker, barrels into the future in search of a cure. As he draws closer to the truth, he uncovers a terrifying conspiracy and faces the possibility of never returning home.

It still amazes me to this day that Jason Stackhouse is none other than lifeguard Vinnie from Home and Away. So apart from utterly useless trivia about who an actor played years back, I am also a bit of a sci-fi nerd and when Chronical: 2067 (or just 2067 outside the UK) crossed my table and was billed as a timey-wimey, post-apocalyptic sci-fi with that young lad from The Road who is all grown up now and True Blood’s Jason Stackhouse (aka actor Ryan Kwanten). Writer/director Seth Larney's 2067 is an entertaining time-travel tale that also happens to feature an important message.
The story arose from Larney's worries about the impending environmental catastrophe and is inspired by genre films from the 60s and 70. The film stars Kodi Smit-McPhee and Ryan Kwanten (“True Blood”) as two men living in a future where humanity has destroyed the earth. The pair are tasked with jumping to the future to find out if and how to save the planet and then bring that knowledge back to the present.
We want to give you an opportunity to discover it for yourself.

Tagline: "The Fight for the Future has Begun." 2067 is a sci-fi thriller. Building on fears of climate change, the future is ravaged by the toxification of the environment. Then, a message is sent from the future to the present, with hope for humanity. This title has been developed by visual effects artist and director Seth Larney. As well, Kodi Smit-McPhee ("Interrogation"), Ryan Kwanten and Leeanna Walsman star in this feature, which will release on DVD this November 17th. Larney has been working on the script for 2067 since 2005. He says of the development process: "it took about 10 years to get the draft to a point where it was really financeable and ready to shoot (AintitCool)." Filmmaking requires patience. Also, Larney talks of his inspiration for this sci-fi drama, which revolves around fears of the changing environment: "we're going to wait until the sign is so obvious that we've kind of missed the boat,...

By now the term “dystopian future” almost seems redundant, at least at the movies — when was the last time you saw a film in which the future wasn’t dystopian? Audiences can swan-dive down that familiar sinkhole once again in “2067,” an Australian sci-fi adventure that’s the first directorial feature from Seth Larney, whose visual-effects background is evidenced in a good-looking production that gets a lot out of its design aspects for the buck.
In the realms of storytelling and character interest, however, this stock “can our protagonist save the planet that humanity already wrecked?” tale proves less resourceful, bogging down in convoluted, low-boil intrigue despite taking place in both the titular year and 25th century. Though Larner gets sole screenplay credit, publicity materials note involvement of at least four other writers. The result is a movie that seems unaware just how generic the should-be-distinguishing details of its earnest eco-cautionary tale have turned out.

Rarely have sci-fi/fantasy flicks embraced the “chosen one” trope as enthusiastically as Seth Larney’s 2067, in which a world on the brink of extinction invests every ounce of hope in a time-machine experiment, and, once it’s running, a message from the future comes back: “Send Ethan Whyte.”
And so a nobody who fixes power plants for a living becomes humanity’s hope in this clunky sci-fictioner, which has a couple of interesting ideas up its sleeve but doesn’t know how to reveal them. A more skillful filmmaker could have made this ride less jarring, but ...

Mat Kesting.
In planning this year’s Adelaide Film Festival, creative director and CEO Mat Kesting and his team put together not just one event, but five.
Covid-related contingency plans – each with its own financial framework – included an entirely virtual festival, a hybrid event, a festival in mini-theatres to keep numbers down and minimise infection risk, and even a festival at the drive-in.
Yet Kesting is both relieved and thrilled they’re able to go ahead with “plan A” – that is, a physical festival in cinemas.
Of course, this will look still different than previous iterations, with chequerboard seating and social distancing in place. Venue partners have been flexible enough to loop in multiple screens and other cinemas in order to maximise audience attendance for sessions. Gala events will also see people “partying like it’s 2020”.

For his sophomore effort, writer/director Seth Larney is turning his attention to a personal story though one that has all the trappings of science fiction.
2067 stars Kodi Smit-McPhee (no longer the little boy in The Road) as Ethan Whyte, a tunnel worker in a future world where humanity has irreversibly damaged to the Earth to the point that what's left of humanity is forced to live on artificial oxygen but this is a temporary solution since the man-made oxygen is slowly poisoning the last remnants of humanity.
Ethan, a lowly tunnel worker, is dumped into the middle of the action when the powers that be receive a message from the future asking for him. Desperate, they send Ethan, along with a companion, played by Ryan Kwanten, in hopes that the pair will find some...

"What if I told you that you could save all of us?" Rlje Films has released an official trailer for a futuristic save-the-world sci-fi project tiled 2067, from Australian filmmaker Seth Larney. After working in the VFX industry for years, he is jumping into directing - this is his second feature film. In the year 2067, people are living on artificial oxygen, but this synthetic O2 is killing humanity. A time machine sends a message back - send Ethan Whyte to save the world. But how? Only one way to find out. Kodi Smit-McPhee and Ryan Kwanten star, with Leeanna Walsman, Deborah Mailman, Sana'a Shaik, Finn Little, Damian Walshe-Howling, and Aaron Glenane. This looks really cool, definitely has some stunning visuals and that always gets my attention. But this trailer seems to give away the typical time travel reveal that you can't actually use time travel to save the past/future? I'm...

While insurance companies and other financiers worldwide have excluded Covid-19 from their policies, Melbourne-based Elevate Production Finance (Epf) is stepping into the breach.
Backed by Australian and international institutions and private equity, Epf is prepared to immediately provide debt funding to film and television productions in Australia and New Zealand despite the pandemic.
Managing director Craig McMahon, who founded Epf in 2018, tells If: “We have the ability to take on a significant amount of work. We are excited to re-open our doors to producers seeking debt finance for their productions.
“The landscape has significantly changed, producers have had to adjust to new working environments and as a lender, we have responded swiftly by reviewing our lending protocols.
“These new protocols will enable us to consider projects impacted by the lack of Covid-19 coverage within insurance policies and completion guarantees, which is a crucial first step in redefining our lending conditions.

Exclusive: Xyz Films has signed on to handle worldwide sales rights to Oz sci-fi thriller 2067, starring Kodi Smit-McPhee (X:Men) and Ryan Kwanten (True Blood). Previously with Content Media, the film marks writer-director Seth Larney’s (Tombiruo) English-language directorial debut. The movie takes place in a world plagued by a disease after climate change has forced the adoption of artificial oxygen. With his wife sick and little hope for survival, Ethan (Smit-McPhee) is forced to travel to the future in search of a cure for the mysterious illness. Not knowing who to trust, he has to navigate a future filled with imminent danger and the possibility of never coming home. [
Producers are Lisa Shaunessy for Arcadia, Jason Taylor for Futurism Studios and Kate Croser for Kojo Entertainment.
Xyz Films is planning to market the film virtually over the coming weeks, in lieu of a traditional film market due to the Covid-19 crisis.
Content Media’s parent company Kew Media collapsed earlier this year meaning the film needed a new sales home. The feature received major production funding from Screen Australia, in association with South Australian Film Corporation (Safc), Adelaide Film Festival Investment Fund and Screen Nsw (New South Wales) and was financed with support from Elevate Production Finance, Grumpy Sailor, Spectrum Films and Cumulus VFX.
Xyz’s recent slate of sales titles include Rza’s Cut Throat City, The Silencing, Sion Sono’s Prisoners Of The Ghostland and Stowaway.
Larney is repped by Rgm Artists. Smit-McPhee is repped by ICM Partners. Kwanten is repped by Rgm Artists, Wme and Link Entertainment.

While some distributors are cutting back, Umbrella Entertainment plans to release approximately 18 titles in cinemas this year, up from 14 in 2019.
The distributor has high hopes for its Australian acquisitions which run the gamut of genres from drama, horror and Western to sci-fi.
“We’re passionate about overcoming the cultural cringe that Australian audiences still have a tendency to display and are dedicated to fostering new Australian talent,” Umbrella head of acquisitions Ari Harrison tells If.
“As a small, close-knit team, we aim to concentrate our efforts on films that we love and can support from the ground up. We want to work hand-in-hand with the filmmakers with the goal of getting their film ‘out there’ so that it finds its audience.
“Essentially we aim to ensure that the films we acquire have the capacity for national theatrical success in Australia and New Zealand, with potential for continued growth via their ancillary platforms.

Hollywood seems to be the most significant film industry in the world, but the Asian movie industry has been blossoming with content over the years. Blockbuster films like ‘The Raid’ (2011) or ‘Train to Busan’ (2016) are trendy among the Asian entertainment industry. The popularity of such movies has not been locally bound; they have gained recognition and mainstream success with Australian audiences, and even the Americans and Europeans. The traditional classics of K-Drama, Anime, even Manga Comic Series are thriving all over the world today.

The box office results for the Australian films and feature docs released in cinemas this year underline yet again the deep polarisation in the indie film market between the higher earners and the also-rans.
The top five titles – Wayne Blair’s Top End Wedding, Shawn Seet’s Storm Boy, Anthony Marais’ Hotel Mumbai, Damon Gameau’s 2040 and Richard Lowenstein’s Mystify: Michael Hutchence – accounted for $15.8 million or 93 per cent of the Oz releases’ takings.
The Aussie films plus holdovers racked up nearly $17 million through the end of July, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.
That’s a long way below the $40.6 million generated in the same period last year, led by Peter Rabbit’s $26.6 million, Breath’s $4.4 million (finishing with $4.6 million) and Sweet Country’s $2 million.

‘2040’.
Five months into the year, 18 Australian films and feature docs released in cinemas since the start of the year, plus holdovers, have racked up a modest $14.3 million.
That compares with $37.6 million generated in the same period last year, led by Peter Rabbit’s $26.4 million, Breath’s $3.6 million in four weeks (finishing with $4.6 million) and Sweet Country’s $2 million.
Shawn Seet’s Storm Boy is the top title with nearly $5 million, a creditable result. But almost certainly that would have been rather higher if Sony Pictures had been able to use Geoffrey Rush in the publicity campaign.
Wayne Blair’s Top End Wedding has grossed $4.7 million through Sunday, its sixth weekend, and could finish with $5.5 million.
Anthony Maras’ Hotel Mumbai collected $3.3 million, knee-capped by the dreadful co-incidence of opening on the same weekend as the Christchurch massacre.

Damon Gameau’s 2040 has earned $568,000 after its second weekend and, buoyed by word-of-mouth, distributor...

‘Top End Wedding’.
It’s been a quiet start for the year for Australian films at the national box office, particularly compared to last year when Peter Rabbit and Sweet Country were drawing crowds.
However exhibitors are very optimistic about the outlook for the rest of the year, including Wayne Blair’s Top End Wedding which opened yesterday, Rachel Ward’s Palm Beach and Kriv Stenders’ Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan (both August 8) and Rachel Griffiths’ Ride Like a Girl (September 26).
Ten new releases plus holdovers collectively racked up $9.06 million through April 30, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.
That’s way below the first four months of 2018, which generated $32 million, with Will Gluck’s Peter Rabbit making $25.4 million en route to a final total of $26.7 million and Warwick Thornton’s Sweet Country $2 million.
Shawn Seet’s Storm Boy pocketed nearly $5 million, not a bad result,...
