“The gatekeepers are gone,” Colin Jost told a roomful of journalists at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on April 27, before pivoting to the punchline: “Did you know that 90 percent of people now get their news exclusively from social media? And that must be true because I saw it in a random guy’s TikTok.”
For those (ever fewer) media gatekeepers who have major reach, trust is currency. And there’s still a halo effect for those TV stars with broadest viewership — i.e., network TV hosts — particularly evening and morning show anchors for NBC and ABC, a new THR/Morning Consult poll shows. The survey, conducted May 4-5 among a sample of 2,239 U.S. adults, asked opinions about 40-plus major TV news stars, as well as surveyed trends about America’s fractured media diet during a presidential campaign year.

CNN will make its June 27 presidential debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump available for simulcast by other networks, a spokesperson said Friday.
ABC News, which is planning a Sept. 10 debate, has said that it will provide the feed to other networks.
The debates between the presidential contenders, which came together this week, promise to be a viewership juggernaut. But the ultimate reach of both events has been a lingering question, as it could have an impact on its total audience.
By making the debate available to rivals, CNN is giving up exclusivity, and perhaps the chance at a larger audience. But the debate overall may end up garnering a larger overall viewership if it is widely available across networks, albeit it will be with CNN talent.
Since 1988, the Commission on Presidential Debates has hosted the general election debates and they have aired across networks, cable outlets and streaming platforms.

Now that the upfronts are over, it’s time to hand out much-deserved accolades to those who made this year’s presentations truly unforgettable.
Just remember, everyone’s a winner here. But these folks made the week extra special in New York.
Most Ominous Overture: Kelly Clarkson kicking off a week of upfronts that used to be the sole proprietorship of broadcast networks with tunes like “Whatever Makes You Stronger” and “Since U Been Gone.”
Best Dressed Code Breakers: Men like Bob Iger, Casey Bloys, Mike Hopkins and Rob Wade for appearing without ties. Nothing says we are hemorrhaging money more than a nude neck.
Earworm Award: Beyoncé’s Texas Hold ‘Em and Miley Cyrus’ Flowers that were played on a loop.
Best Joke of the Week: “NBC is launching the new adventure Destination X,” said Seth Meyers at the NBCU upfront. “It was originally titled the Linda Yaccarino story.

ABC News’ David Muir and Linsey Davis will moderate the second presidential debate on Sept. 10.
Joe Biden and Donald Trump said that they would participate in the event, to be their second matchup this cycle. CNN is hosting the first debate, scheduled for June 27 at its Atlanta headquarters, with Jake Tapper and Dana Bash moderating.
ABC News has not announced the format for its debate, although one source said that it will be in studio as well. The announcement of the moderators was made on World News Tonight, which Muir anchors. Davis anchors the streaming newscast ABC News Live Prime.
This will be the first time that Muir or Davis has moderated a general election debate. The last ABC News personality to do so was Martha Raddatz, who co-moderated a debate with CNN’s Anderson Cooper in 2016.

Sheryl Lee Ralph and Lisa Ann Walter from Abbott Elementary got to call roll at the start of the Disney Upfront Tuesday, which allowed many of the stars from the studio’s movies and networks to sound off (in a video) before the presentation kicked off at the North Javits Center.
And what’s an ABC upfront without the voice of Walt Disney? Yup, he was (heard) there, too. Here’s what else happened at the afternoon shindig:

ABC News is parting ways with longtime meteorologist, Rob Marciano as the reporter has been let go from the network. According to Puck, the ABC World News Tonight with David Muir and Good Morning America meteorologist has been fired. The booting comes after multiple complaints against Marciano over the years to the point where he was temporarily banned from the Good Morning America set. ABC/Heidi Gutman In March 2023, a report from Page Six detailed reasons why Marciano hadn’t reported from the GMA studio because, according to an unnamed source, “He was found to have done something… that was improper, but he was punished for it, and they still haven’t let him return.” Details surrounding the situation weren’t defined, but it was said, “He made people feel uncomfortable.” It’s uncertain what led to Marciano’s dismissal now, but his appearances on ABC News have been spottier in recent months.

“TV doesn’t do it any justice.”
That’s what ABC News Live anchor Linsey Davis said, standing alongside “World News Tonight” host David Muir on the edge of Lake Champlain as the 2024 solar eclipse was just emerging from totality.
She’s right of course — as odd as it is to hear a TV anchor downplay the experience of watching TV. But with its two-hour live afternoon broadcast April 8, ABC News and National Geographic captured a sense of beauty almost completely foreign to the TV news landscape today, and found a way to preserve this moment of time with a pristine clarity and brilliance that technology’s made possible only recently.

The White House is continuing a tradition of hosting major network TV news anchors for a lunch with the president on the day he delivers the State of the Union address, according to sources.
The lunch is typically off the record, but in the past parts of the conversations have been allowed to be used. In 2022, for instance, Biden allowed a comment about NATO and the “unity of the west” to be used.
The three broadcast anchors were among those dining, including NBC News’ Lester Holt, ABC News’ David Muir and CBS News’ Norah O’Donnell. Also there: MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell and Fox News’ Shannon Bream.
This will be Biden’s final State of the Union before the November election. The broadcast anchors all planned to do their evening newscasts from D.C. this evening, and then will anchor coverage starting at 9 p.m. Et.
C-span cameras captured some of the participants.

In the pre-coverage of Joe Biden’s State of the Union address, the speech is being billed as the most important of his presidency, what with his dismal approval numbers and what is shaping up to be very difficult campaign for reelection.
Moreover, so much attention has been paid to the president’s age — at 81, he is the first octogenarian on a major party ticket — that any kind of slip up will be seized upon by his rivals.
Then again, Biden’s most memorable moment last year was an exchange with House Republicans over Social Security, showing that the president had command of the stage. That’s why it’ll be interesting to see if GOP members restrain themselves so as to not give the president the opportunity this year.

Following today’s announcement that CBS has renewed “The Young and the Restless” for four additional seasons, which will take the show through its 55th season and keep it on the air through at least the 2027-2028 TV season, many have wondered what that meant for sister soap “The Bold and the Beautiful.” It turns out the show will also continue, albeit for at least one additional season.
According to a report by TV Line, during the half-hour soap’s last renewal order, CBS included an additional option year, which means that when the network ordered two additional seasons back in March 2022, it also had the option to extend that order to a third season. TV Line notes via a CBS insider that the network “will” exercise that option, which means the show will continue through at least the 2024-2025 TV season and makes a formal renewal announcement a moot point.

After tonight’s Iowa caucuses, networks are planning for a packed week of political events — but the events hinge on the race remaining one between former President Donald Trump and his two main rivals.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is scheduled to do a CNN town hall on Tuesday evening at New England College in Henniker, Nh.
On Thursday, ABC News and Wmur-tv are scheduled to hold a New Hampshire primary debate, moderated by David Muir and Linsey Davis. Those who finish in the top three in Iowa or reach a 10% polling threshold in multiple polls will qualify.

Have you heard it’s cold in Des Moines? The subzero temperatures are making Monday’s caucuses in Iowa the coldest on record, a running theme of coverage throughout the day and into this evening. It’s not trivial, as the frigid weather may very well impact turnout.
As Iowa’s first votes of the 2024 presidential race come in, expect a lot of analysis, punditry and prediction, even if the results represent just a sliver of the primary electorate. The Hawkeye state’s primacy as the first-in-the-nation often obscures the peculiarities of the caucus system, unless there is some kind of glitch, which is what happened four years ago with the Democrats.

The Hawkeye state’s primacy as the first-in-the-nation often obscures the peculiarities of the caucus system, unless there is some kind of glitch, which is what happened four years ago with the Democrats.

Nothing marks a new year quite like the annual Times Square ball drops. This year was no exception, as partygoers gathered live in New York City and families and friends huddled in their living rooms across the country to toast 2024. The televised tradition topped the most-watched telecasts in all of broadcast, according to the Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report for the week of Dec. 25 to Dec. 31.
Dick Clark’s show on ABC has reigned as the top-rated New Year’s Eve special for over 30 years. This year’s rendition, “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2024” carried on the tradition, edging out all other programming for the week. Live from New York’s iconic Time Square, with co-host Rita Ora, the broadcast featured a star-studded lineup of musical performances by Megan Thee Stallion, Jelly Roll, Sabrina Carpenter, Green Day and more.

Former “Good Morning America” hosts Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes have addressed their ouster from the ABC News morning show for the first time — on a new podcast that debuted a year to the day after the network suspended them.
“The best way to sum us up, Amy and T.J., is that we’re the folks who lost the jobs we love because we love each other,” Holmes said on the premiere episode of the podcast, “Amy & T.J.”
Robach — who conceded on the podcast that she was “nervous” in speaking out — said that the couple have “gone through a year of hell” since they were dismissed from “GMA.” “Relationships are hard, they’re messy, they’re not perfect,” she said. “We have fought for love, and I can say I have never been happier. I am with my best friend.”

Walt Disney Co. CEO Bob Iger told employees of the company that his second turn as CEO has been more challenging than he anticipated, but that he is nonetheless “optimistic” about the entertainment giant’s future.
“I knew that there were myriad challenges that I would face coming back,” Iger said at an employee town hall Tuesday afternoon. “I won’t say that it was easy, but I’ve never second guessed the decision to come back, and being back still feels great.”
The veteran executive went on to say that “I had spent the year with the team fixing a lot of things … but I feel that we’ve just emerged from a period of a lot of fixing to one of building again, and I can tell you building is a lot more fun than fixing.”
He added that, with the fixing behind him and the building ahead,...
