Chicago – Instead of playing one of the most anticipated games of the last few years, “Resident Evil 5,” fans of one of gamings most influential franchises are being asked to watch what is essentially a 96-minute cut scene that serves as a prequel or appetizer for what is to come in 2009.
Not as much fun as the Milla Jovovich movies and not nearly as well-conceived or written as the games, “Degeneration” feels like an afterthought, stuck between the world of the movie trilogy and the world of some of the best games ever made. Without the B-movie charm of the former or the blockbuster action of the latter, “Resident Evil: Degeneration” ends up as the last thing fans of the “Re” movies or games usually think of their beloved franchise, forgettable.
The most remarkable thing about “Degeneration” is how disposable the entire affair feels from the very beginning. The CGI visuals...

Resident Evil: Degeneration, the first full-length feature in the franchise to be created via CG, is also the first one to stay true to its video-game roots. Unlike the three live-action movies that came before it, Degeneration (hitting DVD, Blu-ray and Umd December 30 from Sony Pictures) moves the game’s plot forward and takes place after the zombie outbreak in Raccoon City and the fall of the Umbrella Corporation.
As the movie opens, pharmaceutical company WilPharma has taken up the reins where Umbrella left off. The story begins in an airport, where we meet game heroine Claire Redfield, who is there to pick up a young Indian girl who has survived a zombie attack in her home country. Claire is part of an organization that helps survivors of biological terrorism—and it’s fortunate she’s there, as shortly after her arrival, a zombie outbreak begins. All hell breaks...

The results are in! Experts conclude that too much video-game playing featuring violence against zombies leads to an unquenchable desire to see and perpetrate even more violence against zombies!
At least, that’s what Sony Pictures and game maker Capcom are hoping for when they release Resident Evil: Degeneration, their full-cg film based on the seminal zombie shooter, on DVD December 30. For those in the advanced stages of the aforementioned zombie-aggression sickness who simply can’t wait until then, you can catch a Fango-sponsored preview screening of the film next Tuesday, November 18 in Los Angeles (see details here).
Although Resident Evil is a well-established live-action film series, Sony believed that the thirst for further adaptations was far from tapped out. “That’s how the production came about,” says Degeneration director Makoto Kamiya during a recent chat with Fango in Tokyo. “They felt a market was there for a film...
