Maternal instincts and emotions make for a strong foundation in horror movie narratives, and when paired with well-crafted religio-cultural subtext, they can give birth to timeless classics. Perhaps a common primal tone allows a seamless assimilation of themes of maternity and religion, as is seen in a number of acclaimed titles through the years. Bangladeshi-American director Asif Akbar’s latest venture, Skeletons in the Closet, tried to recreate that magic by drawing upon legends of Mexican folk Catholicism within the Latinidad familial heritage. Instead, an atrocious and convoluted plotline, non-existent characterization, and poor visual effects make this movie a horrible mess, which only serves to malign the late phases of the career of its prolific cast. The gulf between intention and application is so vast in the moviemaking effort with this one that even the most hard-core horror fans who have grown tolerant of the worst of B-movies will find it a tepid,...

Death and Other Details Episode 3 added a few more twists and turns to the murder investigation of David/Keith, Rufus’ assistant. Imogen helped Rufus as much as possible before she had to get others involved lest Interpol be notified about her covert activities. We can expect the case will have some more twists and turns, considering it’s just the third episode. There is a lot more hidden in Varuna, and Imogen discovers secret passageways, confirming exactly that. But before all that happened, a few secrets came out in the open, and the facade of a righteous life was shattered. How that would impact the case is yet to be determined. Rufus, meanwhile, had the pleasure of working with Interpol’s ‘best man,’ a woman named Hilde Erikson, as she bulldozed her way into the investigation, trying to get to the truth as quickly as possible.

It isn’t just you. We’re two weeks into the new year and every show on TV has become a murder mystery.
There are reality murder mysteries (Traitors) and animated murder mysteries (Grimsburg) and British murder mysteries (Criminal Record) and occult murder mysteries (Sanctuary: A Witch’s Tale). There are murder mysteries without daylight (True Detective: Night Country) and adapted recent murder mysteries (Fool Me Once) and adapted characters in original murder mysteries (Monsieur Spade).
Those are just January premieres. So far. There’ll be at least one more new murder mystery before the end of the week (The Woman in the Wall).
It’s easy to point to the blockbuster success of the two Knives Out movies and the steady success of the Kenneth Branagh/Michael Green-steered Hercule Poirot movies as a business-driven cause.
Sociologically, it’s easy to point to a decade of distrust of institutional policing...

Netflix announced in March 2022 that it's producing a movie version of the bestselling novel "The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo" by Taylor Jenkins Reid. The book, released in 2017, became a major bestseller, thanks in part to amazing word of mouth on social media. On June 29, the streamer announced that "Russian Doll" co-creator Leslye Headland will direct the film with Liz Tigelaar handling the script, so it seemed like a casting announcement was surely imminent.
However, there still isn't an official cast, so we have a lot of ideas about who we'd like to see star as the titular lead and her seven husbands.
As readers know, in the book, Evelyn Hugo, now 79, asks magazine writer Monique Grant to help her write her life story. Monique is suspicious as to why a famous actor wants to work with her, but she agrees to listen. Evelyn recounts her life, from growing up...

How did Latin culture inspire your drag?
Alexis Mateo: My mom was a fanatic of Miss Universe, and it’s a huge event in my house in Puerto Rico. When she was younger, she used to train people for pageants. I competed in pageants since I was a little boy. And of course, when I became a drag queen, Miss Universe was an inspiration.

Graham Nash got to know John Lennon relatively well over the years. He understood that the Beatle’s personality was relatively caustic at first, but he managed to break through and establish a friendship. Because of this, Cass Elliot asked Nash about what Lennon was like. Nash answered honestly, which brought Elliot to tears.
Graham Nash told Cass Elliot that John Lennon might be mean to her
Nash was a fan of The Mamas and The Papas and was interested in Michelle Phillips, so he went to Western Records to meet the band. He wound up speaking to Elliot, though, who wanted to know about British rock music.
“Inside the studio, Michelle, John, and Denny were huddled around a microphone, putting an overdub on ‘Dancing Bear,'” Nash wrote in his book Wild Tales. “Michelle was every bit as advertised: gorgeous and sexy — but otherwise engaged — so I wound up talking with Cass.

We don’t know much about what to expect, other than Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid will be showing up on the Enterprise as Mariner and Boimler, and the Strange New Worlds cast was hesitant to reveal anything when TV Insider asked — but the consensus was it will be very fun. “Strange New Worlds is so serious, but there’s also a lot of room for levity and smirks and winks,” Ethan Peck (Spock) noted. “Our showrunners Henry Alonso Myers and Akiva Goldsman do such a great job of maintaining that balance between the dark and the light. Elizabeth Perkins is high on reprising her role as Celia in Showtime’s possible Weeds revival.
In May, it was reported that the premium cabler — on which all eight seasons of the Og series aired from 2005 to 2012 — is developing a sequel series that would feature the return of Mary-Louise Parker’s Nancy Botwin. (The project had previously been in the works at Starz.)

Nancy and Celia may be back in business. Elizabeth Perkins, who starred as Celia Hodes on the Showtime series “Weeds” from 2005-2009, tells Variety she’d gladly step back into the role now that a revival of the show is reportedly in the works.
“It’s just that— it’s talking,” Perkins said when asked about talk of a reboot. “I’d be on board. I loved working with Mary-Louise Parker. I love those two characters together, Nancy and Celia!”
Deadline reported in May that a “Weeds” reboot was in development at Showtime with lead star Parker attached to star and executive produce. (Variety first exclusively reported the reboot was in the works at Starz in 2019). Lionsgate, the studio behind the production, declined to comment at the time.
Perkins revealed her interest in a potential reboot as she walked the carpet for Apple TV+’s “The Afterparty” Season 2 on Wednesday night in Los Angeles.

Paul McCartney and John Lennon met as teenagers and quickly grew close. They discovered they had a solid musical connection and were both serious about their craft. Not everyone in McCartney’s life viewed Lennon this way, though. He recalled one of his girlfriends who — understandably — felt a bit put off by the fact that Lennon joined them on a date. McCartney had to defend Lennon and his rudeness to her.
Paul McCartney said John Lennon rubbed some people the wrong way
When McCartney was a teenager, he began dating an art school student.
“I remember I had a girlfriend called Celia,” he said, per the book Paul McCartney: Many Years From Now by Barry Miles. “I must have been sixteen or seventeen, about the same age as her. She was the first art-college girl I’d ever been out with, a bit more sophisticated. And we went out one...

Crime thrillers centered on scams are hard to watch, especially if the con is complicated and many people are affected by it. But The Pregnancy Scheme comes nowhere close to the above-mentioned description. Directed by Ann Marie Fleming and written by Ansley Gordon, The Pregnancy Scheme is about a scam being carried out by two women who are in desperate need of money, until one of them finally develops a conscience.
Spoilers Ahead
Julia’s New Life As A Single Woman
The Pregnancy Scheme begins with an aftermath of a chase where a woman is pleading with another person to consider her unborn child as well. This sets up the tone of the movie, which will have a pregnant woman facing issues and fighting hard to make sure her nine months go smoothly. Julia just broke up with her long-term boyfriend, Drew, and she is trying to make her professional...

Kitty Spencer, Princess Diana‘s niece, married Michael Lewis in 2021. However, one iconic piece of family jewelry, the infamous Spencer tiara, stayed home. Kitty, daughter of Diana’s brother Charles, the 9th Earl Spencer, chose not to wear Diana’s most iconic statement piece on her wedding day due to “painful memories,” claims a jeweler.

The BBC first announced it was making six-part comedy thriller Black Ops back in June 2021 – and boy is it worth the wait.
Created by Famalam’s BAFTA-winning duo of Gbemisola Ikumelo and Akemnji Ndifornyen, it follows two inexperienced Community Support Officers – Ikumelo plays Dom alongside The Wheel of Time’s Hammed Animashaun as Kay – who get recruited into a perilous undercover Met Police operation infiltrating a London drug gang.
There are so many elements that combine to make Black Ops a joyous must-watch:
1. You’ll Instantly Love The Characters
The sibling-like partnership between Dom and Kay makes us feel immediately at ease in their world. So when the enigmatic Di Clinton Blair covertly approaches them to join his “off the books” undercover operation in episode one, we’re invested in their story from the off.
Dom is smart, quick-thinking but also ultimately immature and quite spoiled – she lives at home...

Jessica Chastain has responded to a viral TikTok video in which she declined to sign a fan’s copy of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.”
A fan-backed campaign has pushed to get Chastain to star as Celia St. James in an adaptation of the novel — penned by the same author whose “Daisy Jones & the Six” was adapted into the Prime Video series starring Riley Keough. Outside of her Broadway run of “A Doll’s House,” a fan approached her with the book asking for her signature, but she refused, saying, “I can’t sign that — just because I’m not doing it.”

Jessica Chastain is sharing her autograph policy. The Oscar winner was recently captured in a viral video turning down signing a copy of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” novel following her performance in Broadway revival of “A Doll’s House” at the Hudson Theatre, outside of which she regularly greets fans.
“I can’t sign that, just because I’m not doing it,” Chastain says to the fan in the video. The “Molly’s Game” star later took to Twitter to explain her reasoning for declining to sign books such as these.
“I’ve been asked multiple times by fans, to sign books that I’m not attached to contractually. Because it feels wrong, and like I’m taking credit for someone else’s work, I’ll say I can’t sign because I’m not doing it,” Chastain wrote. “That doesn’t mean I’ve read a bad script.

This post contains spoilers for season 1 of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds."
The first season of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" has a Blu-ray set to be released into the universe, which includes (among other things) a gag reel of the cast breaking down on set. Jess Bush, who plays Nurse Chapel on the show, especially loves that gag reel. "I get all warm and fuzzy watching it," she told me in a recent interview. "There's the story and then there's behind the scenes moments that touch a special place in your heart."
I talked with Bush about that gag reel (including who the actor was that made her laugh more than everyone else) as well as what we might see of Chapel in season 2 of the show, particularly in her relationships with M'Benga (Babs Olusanmokun) and Spock (Ethan Peck).
Note: This interview has been lightly edited for clarity and brevity.

There are many beloved literary universes, from Middle Earth, brilliantly woven by Jrr Tolkien, to Cs Lewis's Narnia, a world accessible through a wardrobe. But how about a totality that completely hinges on one man's philandering ways? Ask, and Taylor Jenkins Reid delivers.
The beloved author - who's the mind behind bestselling books like "The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo" and "One True Loves" - anchors many of her books around those in the spotlight. In particular, her four most recent novels all investigate the plights of fame and feature cameos (for the most part) from a fictional singer in the vein of Rod Stewart. That man's name? Mick Riva.
Mick is introduced, first, in "Evelyn Hugo" - a minor character, at best. He pops up again, albeit briefly, in "Daisy Jones & The Six," which was just adapted into a Prime Video streaming series starring Riley Keough and Sam Claflin.

Exclusive: Julie Walters has pulled out of Clarke Peters-starring Channel 4 drama Truelove due to ill health and is being replaced by Lindsay Duncan.

If you thought the PG-13 version of "M3GAN" was mouthy, you might want to cover your ears for the unrated cut, now available on Peacock. Shortly after the surprisingly touching horror comedy hit theaters, director Gerard Johnstone and screenwriter Akela Cooper both made it known that the original script was gorier than what was shown in theaters, and teased the possibility of an unrated cut as much of the original gore was already filmed but edited out for a PG-13 release. Luckily, Blumhouse and Universal Pictures made the brilliant decision to release the gorier cut of "M3GAN" on Peacock, which is now available to stream.
There are some definite differences between the two films, some more noticeable than others, and may help make your decision whether to go with the theatrical cut or the new, unrated release. Obvious spoilers ahead, but there are the all of differences between the two versions of "M3GAN.

We’re bereft. Happy Valley has ended for good. No more Catherine and Clare having mugs of tea on the back step, no more Sgt Cawood dressed like RoboCop, no more Ryan, no more Tommy Lee Royce. It went out with a bang, but still we’re bereft. What could possibly fill that gap?

Angus MacLachlan burst onto the Sundance scene as the screenwriter behind the Phil Morrison-directed “Junebug” in 2005. That drama is best known for what became a star-making performance from then-unknown Amy Adams and since then MacLachlan graduated to directing self-written features like “Goodbye to All That” and “Abundant Acreage Available.”
His latest feature, “A Little Prayer,” concerns a close-knit family that threatens to collapse when a father (David Strathairn) discovers that his adult son (Will Pullen) may be having an affair.
MacLachlan was joined by Pullen and fellow cast members Jane Levy and Celia Weston, at TheWrap’s Portrait and Video Studio at The Music Lodge for a conversation with Executive Awards Editor Steve Pond.
When asked why he chose to make another family drama set in North Carolina, MacLachlan noted it was the region in which he grew up.

In January, studios typically dump their less-than-stellar movies in theaters, hoping to make a little bit of money back, or to take the tax write-off and move on. When the "M3GAN" trailer dropped, it looked promising, but alarms started ringing after the studio slapped it with a PG-13 rating. Luckily, "M3GAN" is that rare January release that delivers on its premise and then some. It's a crowd-pleasing sci-fi, thriller, and comedy hybrid that leans a little more on laughs than scares, but that's precisely what makes it so much fun.

Warning: contains spoilers for The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself.
Just weeks before it arrived on Netflix, YA fantasy adaptation Half Bad was given a new name. The eight-part take on Sally Green’s popular book series about 17-year-old Nathan’s struggle to emerge from the shadow of his notoriously evil father, dropped the original book title in favour of a bulkier option. The change to The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself “was a Netflix thing quite late in the day,” writer Joe Barton tells Den of Geek.
“We’d finished and I think because it’s a spiritual adaptation of the book, I think they [Netflix] wanted to give it a sort of additional identity on top of that. It was quite a fun process. Trying to come up with a new title. We had a long list of options.”

The title’s a bit of a mouthful but it’s very much worth getting your teeth into this Netflix show, based on Sally Green’s Half Bad trilogy of books. This is nominally a YA series, but it really leans into the ‘A’ of that – it’s a coming of age story, just but one that involves sex and drugs and a massive body count with the gore dialled up to the max.
It’s also about witches, but not the nice kind. The Bastard Son follows Nathan (Jay Lycurgo), a 16-year-old whose father, Marcus Edge (David Gyasi), is the most hated and feared ‘Blood witch’ in the whole of the Fairborne witch community. Nathan’s mother was Fairborne, and when Nathan turns 17 he will discover what his power is (Fairborne have just one each) but also whether or not he is a blood witch. Jay Lycurgo, who plays Nathan in upcoming Netflix series “The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself,” finds himself interrogated by witch Celia (Karen Connell) in a new clip from the show, shared exclusively with Variety.
In the series, which is based on the Half Bad YA series by Sally Green, Lycurgo plays the teenage, illegitimate son of Marcus, considered the world’s most dangerous witch.
At the beginning of the series, with the witch community fearing Nathan takes after his father, he is constantly monitored. In the tense scene above a witch called Celia interrogates him, asking him how he is sleeping at night, whether he has violent dreams, if he is quick to anger and whether he feels any negative feelings towards other witches – at which point she notices a bleeding cut on Nathan’s hand appear to heal up.
