Impeach My Bush: Menon’s Debut a Spirited Period Road Trip
Exploring a provocative dark chapter in the voting tendencies of the United States general public by revisiting the 2004 presidential elections, where incumbent George W. Bush defeated Senator John Kerry for a second term, director Meera Menon’s debut, Farah Goes Bang is clearly not meant to appease denizens of those red states. Instead, it perhaps recalls a distinct moment in time for those that valiantly fought against a tide of regression to support an unlikely candidate, as seen through the eyes of a woman of Iranian heritage on a spirited road trip to garner last minute votes in the swing state of Ohio. Much more than a mere political statement, Menon crafts a low-key character arc around an impressionable two week period that feels much less detrimental in retrospect.

Read More: Watch: Exclusive Trailer for 'Farah Goes Bang' Has Double Entendres to Spare The first time is always an awkward and clumsy moment, so it seems Farah (Nikohl Boosheri) is just like the rest of us when it comes to taking this very big first step. In the exclusive clip from "Farah Goes Bang" above, the eponymous twentysomething can't quite set the mood during one of her many attempts to lose her pesky virginity. Directed and co-written Meera Menon, the film follows Farah and her two best friends, hotheaded Kj (Kandis Erickson) and political junkie Roopa (Kiran Deol), as they road trip across Ohio while campaigning door-to-door for John Kerry. While the crux of their journey is for politics, the three embark on the ultimate quest to kick Farah's virginity to the curb. Michael Steger, Lyman Ward, Samrat Chakrabarti and Kate French also star. The comedy-drama won...

The year is 2004. Three weeks before the presidential election, Farah (Nikohl Boosheri) leaves Los Angeles with her two best friends K.J. (Kandis Erickson) and Roopa (Kiran Deol) to hit the campaign trail for John Kerry. But there is a lot more going on than political idealism on this cross-country road trip, and all three young women will learn some life lessons before Election Day.
Farah Goes Bang, the funny and sometimes touching new film directed and co-written by Meera Menon, follows the conventions of the typical road movie while also perfectly capturing the sense of disenchantment that much of the country’s youth felt during the war in Iraq. Farah is a first-generation American of Persian heritage. Overly focused (some would say obsessed) with her face and body image, Farah has two main goals at this point in her young life: to help end the war by getting Kerry elected,...

Tribeca Film Festival 2013 Nora Ephron Prize goes to first-time filmmaker Meera Menon for ‘Farah Goes Bang’ First-time writer/director Meera Menon has received the inaugural Nora Ephron Prize, which includes a $25,000 cash prize, for Farah Goes Bang, playing in the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival’s Viewpoints section. The Nora Ephron Prize is handed out to "work and talent that embody the spirit and vision of the legendary filmmaker and writer." (Photo: Meera Menon’s Farah Goes Bang.) As described in the Tribeca festival’s press release, Farah Goes Bang "follows an awkward twenty-something who hits the road with her buddies to stump for John Kerry in the 2004 presidential election, hoping the trip will also be her opportunity to finally shed the long-unwanted virginity that still clings to her despite her best—and most uncomfortable—efforts. "A film that, even if you hate hipsters, you may fall in love with, just like me." Yep, that's what I'm quoted as saying (from this review) in this new and, likely, final trailer for Destin Cretton's I Am Not a Hipster, a film that premiered at Sundance last year as one of my favorites of the fest. Despite that title and what it sounds like, it's not a film about hipsters, it's an emotional, entertaining, heartfelt and easily lovable indie musical drama about a struggling family. Dominic Bogart stars as Brook, with Tammy Minoff, Lauren Coleman and Kandis Erickson as his three sisters, and Alvaro Orlando as his friend. I re-watched this recently and really enjoyed it again, such a great film, it's worth seeing when possible. Fantastic final trailer. Brook (Dominic Bogart) is not a hipster – he may wear deep V-neck t-shirts, plaid and have an overwhelmingly self-deprecating attitude, but a hipster he is not (or so the title of this film claims.) Brook is an aspiring musician and while he is having a good amount of success on the San Diego indie music scene, he seems bitter and angry. Brook hates compliments and recognition, which is slightly ironic considering his best friend, Clarke (Alvaro Orlando), is his biggest fan (a fact he announces daily.) While doing a local radio interview Brook seems incredibly disinterested, almost laughing at himself for even being there, but this feeling quickly devolves into combative when the host (Brad William Henke) asks him about his mother (who passed away two years earlier.) Brook flips out and leaves the studio and it is in this moment that we begin to realize what may be the real root of Brook’s behavior. Brook...

Here is a trailer for I Am Not a Hipster, which is premiering at Sundance this year. It was written and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, and follows a group of characters in the indie art and music scene. The Canines have provided the indie soundtrack for the film, which stars Dominic Bogart, Alvaro Orlando, Brad William Henke, Tammy Minoff, Kandis Erickson, and Lauren Coleman.
I Am Not a Hipster is “a character-driven story exploring themes of love, loss and what it means to be creative in the face of tragedy.” The film is part of Sundance’s NEXTsection, which focuses on “pure, bold works by promising filmmakers distinguished by an innovative, forward-thinking approach to storytelling.”
Watch the trailer below and share your thoughts:
This may not be geeky, but it looks pretty cool and definitely has a nice soundtrack. Visit the movies official site for more information and to stream the soundtrack.

[1] As a former resident of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, a.k.a. The Hipster Capital of the World, one joke I've heard (and, okay, repeated) a lot is that you can always tell a hipster by how vehemently he insists he's not a hipster. By that standard, the Sundance 2012 flick I Am Not a Hipster could just be the hipster film to end all hipster films. Whatever that means. Written and directed by first-time feature helmer Destin Daniel Cretton, I Am Not a Hipster follows characters in the indie art and music scene. Appropriately enough, given the material, the movie also features a melancholy indie rock soundtrack by the Canines, with several of their tracks from the movie already available for streaming or downloading. Watch the trailer and find out where to get the music after the jump. Following up their initial competition announcement the folks at the Sundance Film Festival have released the names of thirty additional 2012 selections, in the Spotlight, Park City at Midnight, Next, and New Frontiers sections.
Although these sections tend to focus more on young and up-and-coming filmmakers (particularly the Next sidebar, which was created just a few years ago with that specific mandate), you might find a few names you recognize in the full list of invited films below. Next is where you'll find the new film from "Great World of Sound" director Craig Zobel; it's called "Compliance" and it's described as the (based-on-a-)true story of what happens "when a prank caller convinces a fast food restaurant manager to interrogate an innocent young employee." Lynn Shelton, director of "Humpday," will premiere "Your Sister's Sister" starring Emily Blunt, Rosemarie DeWitt and "Humpday"s Mark Duplass. Duplass also wrote his wife Katie Aselton...

Hipsters. Everybody hates them and nobody knows exactly what they are. Without a trailer, I’d have no idea what to expect from a film titled I Am Not A Hipster. That movie, which was selected as part of Sundace’s new Next <=> program (yes, that’s the real logo), does have a trailer, and it looks like it’s about a hipster. Check it out below.
From the program notes:
I Am Not A Hipster / U.S.A. (Director and screenwriter: Destin Daniel Cretton) — Set in the indie music and art scene, this is a character-driven story exploring themes of love, loss and what it means to be creative in the face of tragedy. Cast: Dominic Bogart, Alvaro Orlando, Brad William Henke, Tammy Minoff, Kandis Erickson, Lauren Coleman.
I may not be an expert on hipsters, but I know you’re not going to pull a hipster audience without hipster music.

Now in its third year, Sundance's Next section (which describes its works as "bold", and "innovative" (think more accessible than and just as low budget as the stuff we find in the New Frontiers section) grabs our attention because of its inclusion of Craig Zobel's latest effort, Compliance a true story drama perhaps in the same budget range as Great World of Sound. Other alumni embedded in this group of nine include: Helmer Destin Daniel Cretton (who one in Park City a couple of years back for Short Term 12) returns with his feature debut, I Am Not a Hipster and the Zellner bros. are back again with their latest, Kid-Thing (the teaser on Kickstarter seriously rocks). Worth noting: actress Carrie Preston brings her feature bromance-like comedy (That's What She Said) with the unlikely trio of actresses in Anne Heche, Marcia DeBonis, Alia Shawkat while Matt Ross (I'm sure...

Yesterday The Sundance Film Festival released their list of In-Competition films, today they have released their line-up of Non-Competition films. Now we've got a lineup of films that will play out of competition in the Spotlight, Park City at Midnight, Next <=> and New Frontier schedules. There are a few films in here with which you might be nominally familiar, like The Raid, Grabbers and Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie, not to mention Andrea Arnold's new version of Wuthering Heights. But many are new announcements. While the competition lineups are always a good place to look for some of the films that will be the most talked-about in the year following each Sundance fest, these schedules are where some of the more unique and provocative films live. There are still some big premieres to be announced next week, but if I was making a big Sundance wishlist,...

Following yesterday's announcement of the titles lined up for the four programs of the Competition, the Sundance Film Festival has unveiled the lineups of its out-of-competition sections: Spotlight, Park City at Midnight, Next <=> and New Frontier. This time, I'm going to go ahead and copy-n-paste the release nearly in full because, well, these are, potentially at least, the more interesting batches.
We'll cut in just as Trevor Groth, Director of Programming for the Sundance Film Festival, is saying, “In many ways, the extremes of the Festival’s program are most readily apparent in our out-of-competition sections, which showcase the wildest comedies, the most terrifying horror films and uncompromised visions from singular voices springing up from around the country and the world. We hope audiences experiment with their film selections to an equal degree as these filmmakers have experimented with their storytelling.”

Trail Of Blood may be presented by Joe Dante – who is attached as a producer – but it is written and directed by Joseph and Justin Guerrieri, marking the duo’s feature directorial debut.
The story follows Jim Lerner, a young U.S. Marine, and his six friends as they go on a weekend camping trip. Deep in the woods they stumble upon, of all things, the mutilated corpses of another vacationing couple. They then meet the “Angel of Death” – really just a disturbed war veteran – who mistakes them for the killers, takes them hostage, and forces them into a series of traumatizing mind games that push them to, and possibly over, the edge.
