Technology is awesome, and technology sucks, it both connects us and disconnects us, it makes us feel a part of the global society while simultaneously increasing our individualism, and as a result of all this, technology is the sharpest double-edged sword maybe of all-time.
Under that technological umbrella, social media is its own separate black hole, a virtual construct that has almost entirely replaced old forms of socialization. The people with whom I interact most in a week — my Fsr/Ops colleagues — are people I have never been in the same room with, and until we started the One Perfect Podcast a few weeks ago, I had never even heard most of their voices.

Leave it to one of the youngest film companies to bring back an old-school movie tradition. Neon, the distribution shingle launched by Tim League and Tom Quinn, has started a short film division, reviving the practice of screening shorts before feature film releases. The initiative will kick off with writer-director Peter Huang’s “5 Films About Technology”, which will premiere alongside Nacho Vigalondo’s “Colossal,” starring Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis and hitting theaters Friday.

A heavyweight roster of world premieres from the leading lights of Canada’s film industry will grace the Toronto International Film Festival next month.
New work from Deepa Mehta, Bruce McDonald and Chloé Robichaud are among the Canadian features set to receive their world premieres, while Xavier Dolan and Kim Nguyen earn North American premieres for their latest films following their Cannes debuts.
Wednesday’s announcement included the slate of Canadian short films, the festival’s four Rising Stars, and participants in the Talent Lab and Telefilm Canada Pitch This! programmes.
Talent Lab alumnus Andrew Cividino is named the 2016 Len Blum Resident. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that 19 scientific and technical achievements represented by 52 individual award recipients will be honored at its annual Scientific and Technical Awards Presentation on Saturday, February 15, at The Beverly Hills Hotel.
In addition, visual effects supervisor and director of photography Peter W. Anderson will receive the Gordon E. Sawyer Award (an Oscar® statuette) for technological contributions that have brought credit to the industry. Post-production and distribution executive Charles “Tad” Marburg will receive the John A. Bonner Medal of Commendation for outstanding service and dedication in upholding the high standards of the Academy.
For the first time in the history of the Scientific and Technical Awards, a large number of individuals, collectively, will be recognized with an Academy Award® of Merit (an Oscar statuette). The award is dedicated to “all those who built and operated film laboratories, for over a century of service to the motion picture industry.

The awards will be presented separately from the Oscars, and are, indeed, awarded through a different process. The technologies honored do not need to have been invented in the year 2013 to win, rather, they need to have been proven to be vital contributions to filmmaking.
“This year’s honorees have in a myriad of ways enabled today’s moviegoing experience. Their efforts have advanced not only the art and science of motion pictures, but the work of countless global industries,” proclaimed Richard Edlund, the Scientific and Technical Awards Committee Chair, himself an Oscar-winner for his work in visual effects.
