Washington — The inconveniences of the daily routine in the nation's capital will be a selling point as Washington, D.C., makes a push to host the 2024 Olympics.
"We are the safest and most secure city in the world," said Bob Sweeney, president of DC 2024. "The largest expense of any Olympic Games is security, and the fact that we've got it pretty built in to our everyday life here in Washington, we would leverage that asset tremendously to put on this high-profile event."
Sweeney announced Tuesday the formation of a nonprofit group aimed at making D.C. the first American city to host the Summer Games since Atlanta in 1996, and the first to host an Olympics since the Winter Games were held in Salt Lake City in 2002.
The bid has a long way to go. Washington was one of 35 U.S. cities to receive a letter from the U.S. Olympic Committee to gauge interest,...

One of the most eagerly anticipated films of the season is about to be released on Blu-ray/DVD, and if you live in or around Burbank, California, you can meet members of the cast and crew of Silent Night at Dark Delicacies on December 4th to celebrate the mayhem.
A very loose remake of Silent Night, Deadly Night, the new film’s stellar cast includes Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange, Rob Zombie’s Halloween, Easy A), Jaime King (Sin City, My Bloody Valentine 3D), Donal Logue (Shark Night 3D, Blade), Lisa Marie (Sleepy Hollow), Brendan Fehr (Final Destination, X-Men First Class) and Ellen Wong (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World).
McDowell and King star as a small-town sheriff and deputy on the hunt for a murderous Santa Claus terrorizing their community on Christmas Eve. But with the streets full of Santas for the annual Christmas parade, the killer is hiding in plain sight.

The Movie Pool wanders into The Barrens Blu-ray!
The Movie Pool's Eric Shirey has also reviewed The Barrens on Blu-ray. You can click here to read his review.
The Set-up
A father (Stephen Moyer) takes his family on a camping trip to the dense forests of New Jersey, and comes to believe that the Jersey Devil is stalking them.
Directed by: Darren Lynn Bousman

Is it too much to ask for a little more Jersey Devil in a Jersey Devil movie?
That's the question I kept asking myself throughout this disappointing film. Part of the problem here is the film's structure does not leave the viewer much to remain interested in as things slowly, and I do mean slowly, unfold. The setup inserts the Jersey Devil legend into a Shining-style premise, with lackluster results. Stephen Moyer plays Richard, a father who hopes to reconnect with his kids by...

Writer/director Darren Lynn Bousman isn't one to sit still for very long; after helming three successful Saw sequels from 2004 to 2007, he's gone on to direct a string of genre flicks, and his latest thriller, The Barrens, is now available on Blu-ray and DVD from Anchor Bay Films.
Recently Dread Central caught up with the ever-busy Bousman on the phone to chat about his Jersey Devil-inspired project that stars Stephen Moyer, Mia Kirshner and Shawn Ashmore. During our interview we heard more from him on his experiences making the film, his thoughts on collaborating with Moyer and how he pushed the "True Blood" star to his limits, and much more.

I hate when I put a movie in I was excited to see and it fails to meet my expectations. That's exactly how I felt when the credits rolled on Darren Lynn Bousman's The Barrens. This is the perfect example of a film whose beginning and end shine but the middle just drags on for too long. After seeing what Bousman did with Mother's Day, I really expected more from his next outing.
Richard Vineyard (Stephen Moyer) needs a little time off from his busy life and the trappings of modern civilization. He takes his family on a camping trip to the pine forests of New Jersey called the Barrens. His father used to take him there as a boy. Richard wants to honor his father's wishes by scattering his ashes throughout the area. Upon arriving at their campsite, they are bombarded with stories about a creature spawned from Satan named the Jersey Devil.

It was announced that Darren Lynn Bousman’s latest film, The Barrens, will see a Blu-ray/DVD release this October. We’ve seen very little content from the film up to this point, but the official trailer has been released and have it for you to watch.
Synopsis: “It’s known as the Jersey Devil, the winged beast spawned 400 years ago by Satan himself. Some say this creature still inhabits the dense pine forests of southern New Jersey, where Richard Vineyard (Stephen Moyer, True Blood) takes his family for a rustic weekend camping trip. As the Vineyard family ventures further into the woods in search of the perfect campsite, Richard teeters on the edge of sanity. And it seems that the blood-crazed demon called The Jersey Devil may no longer be just a myth. With Steven C. Miller’s slasher Santa flick Silent Night having wrapped last month in Winnipeg, we chatted with the director regarding the feature, as we also did with makeup guru Vincent Guastini, both of whom gave us the lowdown on the FX-heavy flick, its slated release date, and more.
“We shot it in seventeen days,” Miller, whose feature The Aggression Scale released earlier this week to video via Anchor Bay, told us of Silent Night, which stars veteran actor Malcolm McDowell, Jaime King (Sin City), Jamie Kennedy (Scream), Brendan Fehr (Final Destination), Lisa Marie (Sleepy Hollow), Donal Logue (Shark Night 3D) and Ellen Wong and serves as a loose remake of Charles E. Sellier, Jr.’s controversial 1984 slasher film Silent Night, Deadly Night. The originator revolved around an unhinged teenager who embarks on an axe murder spree while dressed as Saint Nick.

Night Gallery: Season 3 DVD Available Now
The third and final season (1972–73) of Rod Serling’s underrated series finally comes to DVD. Season 3 (with episodes downsized to half an hour) is generally considered inferior to the first two years, but it still contains several classic episodes. Best of all, Jim Benson and Scott Skelton, co-authors of Rod Serling’s Night Gallery: An After-Hours Tour, helped put together a “lost” episode featuring four segments that were heavily altered for syndication. Guest stars this season include Mickey Rooney, Vincent Price, Burgess Meredith and gorgeous Joanna Pettet (The Evil).

I became a fan of Steven C. Miller several years ago after watching his $30,000 zombie flick Automaton Transfusion and I've watched him and his projects ever since. Most recently is the cool Syfy/After Dark Originals film Scream of the Banshee which was freaking amazing for this horror fan and I've even requested a sequel to said director earlier today!
Anyway, what do you get when you team up Miller with Brad Miska from Bloody-Disgusting and company? You get the next horror offering entitled Under The Bed. From what I've been told is I'm going to love this so I know all of you horror fanatics will too! Read on below and dig on the cool image up top Siska sent over.

With the acclaimed Automaton Transfusion filmmaker Steven C. Miller burst onto the horror scene and made lots of folks take notice. His last effort, the After Dark Original Scream of the Banshee, showed how he's grown as a filmmaker. Word has just come down about his latest project, and it sounds as if the best is yet to come.

If you've been following along with Darren Bousman's blog, you already know that the filming of his next movie, 11 11 11, has been ... well ... eventful to say the least. The weirdness continues.
In a conversation with Bousman on Twitter, cinematographer Joseph White talks about some of the unexplained things they caught on camera.
"[Darren Bousman] just showed me some footage from 11-11-11 - something strange happening in the background of a shot that I cant explain...," writes White. "Like I was there - and there's something happening in the windows of the house - which was empty - that I didn't see on set."
How we love stuff like this!
Timothy Gibbs (Witchboard 2), Michael Landes (Final Destination 2, Possession), Wendy Glenn ("Nip/Tuck"), Lluis Soler, Ángela Rosal, Brendan Price (Dagon), Salomé Jimenez, Benjamin Cook, and Montse Alcoverro star.

Nothing ever goes according to script in Hollywood, of course -- and that includes the Academy Awards.
Every year pundits huffily tout their predictions only to be flouted on Oscar night by upsets. Just over the past decade, for example, there were jawdroppers achieved by 'Crash' in the Best Picture race and, in the acting categories, Alan Arkin ('Little Miss Sunshine'), Jim Broadbent ('Iris'), Adrien Brody ('The Pianist'), Marion Cotillard ('La Vie en Rose'), Marcia Gay Harden ('Pollock') and Tilda Swinton ('Michael Clayton'), among others.

HollywoodNews.com: Last week, Supporting Actress nominee Melissa Leo (“The Fighter”) took out her own trade ads touting her more glamorous side. The character actress, who is the frontrunner at the Oscars, wanted to show the industry her versatility. Instead, she set off an on-going debate about the propriety of such self-promotion.
Pete Hammond (Deadline) spoke to her last Thursday, as the campaign ran timed to coincide with ballots arriving for Oscar voters. Leo told Pete that, frustrated after failing to land talk show gigs and magazine covers, “I took matters into my own hands. I knew what I was doing and told my representation how earnest I was about this idea. I had never heard of any actor taking out an ad as themselves and I wanted to give it a shot.”
Tim Appelo (THR) followed up with Leo at Monday’s Academy Awards nominee luncheon.

I'm not going to alert you every time the man writes a word there, so I'm playing selective with the updates, especially if he's got something really juicy to share. Today, from Spain, he detailed about his experiences going on a tech scout with his director of photography Joseph White. It seems they're shooting in a house full of bad mojo. No one likes it. It's got secrets and Darren talks about it all right here . 11-11-11 's story goes like this: After the tragic death of his wife and child, famed American author Joseph Crone travels from the United States to Barcelona, Spain to reunite with his enstranged brother Samuel and dying father,...

It’s not very difficult for a producer or director to pitch a comedy or drama, a family or science fiction flick. The rules are pretty much already in place and only a small percentage of what’s seen in theaters does much to move beyond these categories—for better or worse, most entertainment is largely the same. Where there are no rules, though, is in the world of cult films. What makes John Waters’ movies cult classics is so different from what makes Eraserhead or Donnie Darko revered by midnight spectators that it’s a mug’s game figuring out what will find its audience. Thinking along these lines, Repo! The Genetic Opera is unique,...
