"F9" and "Star Trek: Beyond" director Justin Lin is heading to Amazon.
The producer-director is developing the series "Infinite Thread," a sci-fi crime drama written by Julius and Alston Ramsay. The Ramsay brothers and Byron Balasco ("Kingdom") will showrun the project together, which promises to be a mashup of sci-fi and true crime.
The Ramsay brothers wrote "Infinite Thread" on spec, and the script caught the attention of Lin and Andrew Schneider, Lin's colleague at their production company, Perfect Storm. Deadline describes the story as follows:

Amazon Studios has put into development Infinite Thread, described as a series that blends true crime and science fiction, from the Ramsay brothers (Into the Dark), Kingdom creator Byron Balasco, Justin Lin and his Perfect Storm Entertainment and Universal TV, where Lin is under a deal.
Infinite Thread began as a spec script written by Julius and Alston Ramsay, who also serve as co-showrunners alongside Balasco. In it, after a pair of twins are abducted, a determined sheriff deputy embarks on a quest into the unknown that will alter the course of human history. Infinite Thread blends true crime and science fiction in its depiction of one man’s epic investigation into a crime that breaks the boundaries of time and space.
The Ramsays executive produce with Belasco, along with Lin and Andrew Schneider for Perfect Storm. The project is co-produced by Amazon Studios and Universal TV, a division of Universal Television Group.

Ah, Netflix. The streaming service has reached a near-ubiquitous status in our current culture, finding its way into more than 200 million homes around the world and driving discussion about TV on a weekly basis. By now, it’s not a question of whether or not you have access to Netflix. It’s not even a question of if you’re going to watch Netflix. It’s merely a question of what you’re going to sample on the service this month.
In 2021, the query is growing all the more variable. Acquired staples like “The Office” and “The West Wing” are gone, forcing viewers to replace their perma-loop series, and the pandemic disrupted Netflix’s routine release of many favorite recurring originals. (When will we see “Ozark” Season 4? Not in April!) Netflix itself seems focused on new shows anyway, whether it’s the constant sampling of experimental content (like docuseries that...

1. “The Baby-Sitters Club” Season 1 (available now)
Why Should I Watch? Netflix’s adaptation of Ann M. Martin’s ’90s era novels have been wooing plenty of viewers well-outside its young adult demographic — this critic included — without abandoning its most important fanbase. “The Baby-Sitters Club” is a rich, warm-hearted story about a group of middle-schoolers who band together, not only to make a little extra money and give themselves an excuse to hang out, but to provide a much-needed service for parents; the titular baby-sitters have an earnest yet relaxed investment in the kids they care for, and that same casually compassionate attitude buoys the series itself to lovable heights. Adult viewers may come for a pastel-dipped piece of nostalgia, but they — and younger audiences — will stick around for a savvy, inclusive, and rewarding update on “Bsc.”

“Kingdom,” Byron Balasco’s excellent drama series on Audience Network, came to a stunning close Wednesday night. After confirming a painful loss alluded to the week prior and ending on the bruised and battered body of Alvey Kulina (Frank Grillo), post-fight, fans may be struggling to cope with a devastating ending that encouraged introspection more than it provided easy answers.
“The conclusion of the show is about having done the work,” Jonathan Tucker said in an interview with IndieWire. “We have bled, we have cried, we have laughed, and now it’s about allowing the work to find itself; the magic to find itself; the authenticity to find itself.”

TV shows get cancelled all the time, and it’s the brutal nature of the business that some series will end before the creators are ready to say goodbye.
But “Kingdom” wasn’t supposed to end now, and not like this. The Audience Network’s flagship drama about a family of Mma fighters will air its series finale tonight, August 2, after three seasons, 40 episodes, and quite a few rounds in the cage.
Byron Balasco’s drama is only available to DirecTV subscribers, so it didn’t earn great ratings. However, sources told IndieWire that audience share wasn’t the problem. Wednesday’s ending wasn’t written as a series finale; Balasco turned in the script months ago, before it was announced Season 3 would be the last. (The production company, Endemol Shine Group, and distributor, DirecTV, declined to comment.)

“The Defiant Ones”
Season 1, Episode 3
Written by: Allen Hughes, Lasse Jarvi, Doug Pray
Directed by: Allen Hughes
Allen Hughes’ well-cut music documentary is populated with enough industry giants that just listening to them babble for four hours would’ve been well worth the time. But Hughes skillfully incorporated historical footage with those fascinating reflections, and never is the combination more captivating than in Episode 3.
Taking us back to the release of Dr. Dre’s “Chronic” album, Episode 3 features vital discussions about free speech, how rap was a misunderstood tool of rebellion, and why Jimmy Iovine and Dre persevered despited persecution. It’s not just about overcoming censorship and catering to the demand of customers: “The Defiant Ones” shows and tells us why this was a make-or-break moment for the most popular music in the country (especially as coastal rap battles turned deadly).

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the best TV show airing in 2017 that people may have missed this year? This could be a new show that debuted or a returning show that aired a new season this year.
Allison Keene (@KeeneTV), Collider
There have actually been two “forgotten” shows in 2017 that I’ve stumped for pretty hard. The first is “Hap and Leonard’s” second season, “Mucho Mojo,” on SundanceTV. It’s nearly a sea change from its first season, as it tells a difficult and complicated racial story that’s balanced with its trademark wit and quirky sensibilities. It’s a tale that isn’t being told anywhere else right now — of neglected neighborhoods,...

On this week’s Audience Network Mma drama Kingdom, a crushing blow is delivered to Jay Kulina, played by Jonathan Tucker. Kulina is the son of Mma legend and Navy St. Gym owner Alvey Kulina, played by Frank Grillo, on the show. The series is from showrunner and executive producer Byron Balasco, and thanks in great part to Balasco’s top-notch writing and the performance Tucker has turned in for three seasons, Kingdom never fails to deliver heartbreaking and edge of the seat realistic fight action with memorable scenes. In the first few episodes of “Kingdom” Season 3, the excellent final season of Audience Network’s flagship drama, there are moments that are hard to watch. No, it’s not the cage-fighting, where grown men pummel each other with unsparing precision. Those are obviously painful, but just as obviously essential to the Venice-set Mma series.
As Alvey (Frank Grillo) and his gym of fighters work toward professional and personal glory, the difficult scenes sneak up in subtle asides that speak to the nuance of a great human drama. It’s just a word or two, really, fit within scenes geared toward something else entirely. They’re trigger words that make progressive-minded TV fans’ hair stand up; their guts turn; their minds uncomfortably shift as they’re reminded that the world they’re watching has its own set of rules.

Jonathan Tucker has basketball on his mind.
The actor is reflecting on a magazine profile of lauded NBA player Stephen Curry, whose childlike essence may be a distraction, the article says, but is also his greatest asset. Tucker finds himself drawn to a quote from Curry's coach: "When Stephen Curry is joyful, he is an assassin."

It came as little surprise that Frank Grillo would be returning for the third film in "The Purge" series when it was announced last week. The talented actor has garnered a sizeable fanbase in recent years for his committed performances, and the actor was easily the shining light of the sequel.
What may surprise you to learn though is that writer/director James DeMonaco didn't even have a script for the third "Purge" and wasn't going to do it without Grillo back onboard - unexpected considering the series is seen are more of anthology style deal with only the concept carrying over between entries. Speaking about it at the Television Critics Association tour yesterday, Grillo tells Slashfilm:
"They didn't have a script. They just called and said, 'Would you be interested if we had a great script?' DeMonaco called and said, 'If it's with you, I'll do it.
What may surprise you to learn though is that writer/director James DeMonaco didn't even have a script for the third "Purge" and wasn't going to do it without Grillo back onboard - unexpected considering the series is seen are more of anthology style deal with only the concept carrying over between entries. Kingdom has yet to air its second season, but DirecTV is already thinking ahead to a potential fourth season. Such was the sentiment expressed today by DirecTV’s Chris Long, moderator of the Endemol Shine Studios-produced show’s TCA panel attended by series creator Byron Balasco, along with stars Frank Grillo, Keile Sanchez, Jonathan Tucker, Matt Lauria, Joanna Going, and Jessica Szhor. After a successful, ten-episode first season, the Mma fighter drama returning for…...

Boardwalk Empire, “Devil You Know”
Written by Howard Korder
Directed by Jeremy Podeswa
Aired October 12, 2014
After four seasons of deliberately paced, character-based storytelling, Boardwalk Empire wasn’t going to change its approach in its final truncated season. Instead of introducing new intrigues or foes, the series used much of its time to reflect on the paths that brought Nucky and the other main characters to this point and to say an extended goodbye to the people and world of the show. With Nucky facing off against well known historical figures, an air of doom pervades much of the final episodes before they reach their poetic, but inevitable conclusion. More intriguing is the antepenultimate episode, “Devil You Know”, which says goodbye to two of the series’ most colorful characters and powerful actors, Michael Shannon’s George Mueller/Nelson Van Alden and Michael K. Williams’ Chalky White. Shannon’s intense and frequently...

Kingdom, Season 1, Episode 10: “King Beast”
Written by Byron Balasco
Directed by Tim Iacofano
Airs Wednesdays at 9pm Et on the Audience Network
The first season finale of Kingdom, appropriately titled “King Beast”, is more interesting for what it doesn’t do than what it does. Namely, the episode contains no overreactions to the events of fight day. There is a complete lack of build up to the fights both Ryan and Jay have been preparing for for months. Both fighters are loose at Navy Street during final preparations, if not totally relaxed. Jay is his usual sarcastic self throughout the entire day, keeping everybody around him in good spirits as the fights inch closer. Even in the stew room, surrounded by nervous family and friends, the tension doesn’t overwhelm the excitement of the battle. Ryan is visibly coiled up inside, ready to burst, but not in a way...

In Kingdom's season 1 finale, Ryan Wheeler and Jay Kulina both began their comebacks, Nate gave into temptation, Christina might have returned to her old ways, Lisa changed her life, and Alvey realized that sometimes getting everything you want leaves you, well, nowhere. All in all, it was an hour full of beautifully executed fight scenes and even more powerful drama. We talked with creator Byron Balasco about the final hour and what fans can expect moving forward.

The world of mixed martial arts is brutal enough, but DirecTV's freshman series Kingdom throws something else into the ring: family. The show, executive produced by Byron Balasco (Without A Trace, Detroit 1-8-7), centers on Alvey Kulina (Frank Grillo), who owns an Mma gym and attempts to take care of his fighters while also maintaining a relationship with his sons (Jonathan Tucker and Nick Jonas). DirecTV has already ordered a 20-episode second season of Kingdom, which wraps up Season 1 Wednesday night. Balasco took time to answer our TV Guide Magazine showrunner survey and explain why viewers should tap in.

Byron Balasco: We will fill your void.

Kingdom, Season 1, Episode 7: “Animator/Annihilator”
Written by Byron Balasco
Directed by Dennie Gordon
Airs Wednesdays at 9pm Et on the Audience Network
At the very least, Kingdom uses the questionable decisions made last week to its benefit during “Animator/Annihilator”, leveraging the Keith cliffhanger and the Joanna situation into more believable character moments, which is what it does best. The episode still feels incredibly disjointed and aimless, but watching the characters struggle through issues that have been building throughout the season offers focus on an individual level if not a broader one. Even so, there isn’t enough of a cornerstone in each of the existing plots to make either the escalation of conflicts or the resolution of issues feel momentous. Ryan’s struggles on the road to being ready for a fight is only as interesting as his most recent breakdown thus far, and his manic episode in...

Setting a scripted television show in the world of mixed martial arts means accurately portraying a very physical subculture of society. So when Byron Balasco created Kingdom, he made sure to craft every detail, from the setting down to the individual tattoos each of the characters would wear with pride. It was a job Balasco took very seriously, because he knew that through Kingdom, he was not only introducing many fans to a new world, but he was also creating an accurate portrayal for those already familiar. With that in mind, Balasco decided he had to focus just as much...

We have great news for Nick Jonas and his own Mma drama Kingdom. The show that follows his character’s Mma craeer got a double dose renewal with a two season order. The first 10 episode season was l ordered by DirecTV for their Audience channel. The show was not expected to do as well as it did, but the brand was quick to renew it before season 1 ended. Season 2 an 3 will premier 10 episode seasons in 2015 and 2016 respectively. Here was what DirecTV had to say about the nice surprise.
DirecTV could not be more thrilled by the response that last week’s premiere of Kingdom elicited from both critics and our viewers, he series very clearly resonated with DirecTV’s subscribers, and we eagerly anticipate sharing these additional 20 episodes with them and further exploring the compelling world that Byron Balasco has created

DirecTV's newest original show Kingdom has only aired two episodes of its 10-episode first season, and it's already made its mark on the network. DirecTV has ordered 20 more episodes of the Mma-centric series from creator Byron Balasco. Although DirecTV hasn't released ratings, it said in a release that Kingdom "has proven to be one of Audience Network’s most popular shows of all time." Production on the new episodes will begin in spring 2015, with the first round of 10 episodes airing that fall. The following 10 episodes will then air in 2016.

Kingdom, Season 1, Episode 2, “Glass Eye”
Directed by Adam Davidson
Written by Byron Balasco
Airs Wednesdays at 9pm Et on the Audience Network
After a premiere where every storyline invariably came back to Nate’s comings and goings, the second episode of Kingdom, “Glass Eye”, offers a look at everyone connected to Navy Street, with Nate mostly out of the picture post-hospitalization. The audience’s curiosity about his condition is satisfied early, but besides a wordless sequence with a dummy in the backyard, he doesn’t have much else to do. Everything is still tangentially related to Nate’s status because the show is still in too nascent a stage to truly spin anyone’s doings off to something unrelated, but even when Jay or Alvey are doing things on his behalf, it is without his permission or even his knowledge. He prefers not to talk to the cops even if...

Kingdom Season 1, Episode 1, “Set Yourself on Fire”
Directed by Adam Davidson
Written by Byron Balasco
Airs Wednesdays at 9pm on the Audience Network
Kingdom is a different beast for the land of pay cable shows. Byron Balasco — he of such procedurals as Without a Trace, Detroit 1-8-7, and FlashForward — wrote the script on spec. DirecTV’s third scripted series ever (not counting their role as savior of Friday Night Lights) and only the third show out of Endemol Studios, the show is very much a mix of experience and newer hands both behind the camera and in front of it. Balasco’s expertise in the world of Mma is sketchy at best, and before now he was better know as an executive producer or co-producer than a show runner. Even after taking all of this into account, the pilot is a more cohesive look at the damaged and problematic Kulinas...

When Byron Balasco tells people that his new show Kingdom is about Mixed Martial Arts, their response tends to be, "Oh, so it's a reality show?" It's not a wild notion, considering that we live in a world with very few (if any) scripted shows about Mma. But for Balasco, the idea never seemed far-fetched. "I had been a fan of Mma for years and years and years, way back even before it became what it is, like 10-12 years ago even," Balasco said. "And it always seemed like a great place to set a show because it's such an interesting cross-section of characters.

There's so much machismo coursing through DirecTV's “Kingdom,” you could get testosterone poisoning just from watching it. Characters brawl, ball women and kick the crap out of each other in this new series from creator Byron Balasco, a long-time fan of Ufc-style mixed martial arts. Set in Venice, not far from Muscle Beach, it shows a grittier side of that seaside community than most Hollywood concoctions. Let's just say it's a world Gloria Steinem would not like to inhabit. But if you can handle a pounding first episode — and a seedy demimonde rife with drug use and casual misogyny — there's.
