Open City Documentary Festival has announced the full programme of its seventh edition, which will open with Taste Of Cement on September 5 and close with Purge This Land on September 10.
The line-up includes 36 UK premieres (21 features and 15 shorts) and events will span 13 London venues.
Michael Stewart, Founder of Open City Docs, said: "We’re excited to reveal the details of this year’s eclectic programme. We are living through a time when a cloud of unknowing seems to have enveloped us.
"The role of documentary cinema is not, in our view, to provide answers, rather, to hold an eye askance at the shape of the world and to show us things we do not normally see. Pick a film from each day of the festival and I trust you will find six diverse visions of what it means to be a human today."

A very famous and talented man of the theater once remarked that “Hello, Dolly!” set the Broadway musical back 20 years. Or maybe he said it was only a 10-year setback. One of the many charms of the new “Dolly!” revival is that the 1964 musical appears to be taking place on Broadway 80 years ago. Director Jerry Zaks and designer Santo Loquasto treat the Michael Stewart and Jerry Herman show as an antique, but cover its frayed seams with a crackerjack cast. Of course, the big news is the return of Bette Midler. Playing the matchmaker, she does not disappoint...

If you haven't seen Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing in a while, you might not remember that the boom-box-toting Radio Raheem (Bill Nunn) got killed the same way Eric Garner did — by a New York City police chokehold. That a real man in 2014, Garner, could be killed the same way as a fictional character in 1989 (and other real men, Michael Stewart in 1983 and Anthony Baez in 1994, with Baez's death coming a year after the NYPD banned strangulation as a way to subdue suspects) became the inspiration for a cold reading of Lee's original script this Black Friday. The idea began with Fruitvale Station director Ryan Coogler. He's part of a network called Blackout for Human Rights that formed in the wake of Garner's death as a way to, he says, "put an end to human-rights violations being committed by public servants, men and women being...

A major studio has not produced an original live-action movie musical since 1992's Newsies, starring little kid Christian Bale. I am talking wholly original, here. Moulin Rouge! in 2001 counts in that it was original story, but it only featured one and a half original songs. Therefore, it does not fit the criteria. Well, Fox is taking a chance on The Greatest Showman on Earth centered on P.T. Barnum, legendary co-creator of Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus. Hugh Jackman, who is now getting pretty good reviews on Broadway in Jez Butterworth's The River (though, the play itself is being met with a bit harsher criticism), is set to play Barnum in the film, which plans to start production in New York next summer. Bill Condon penned the latest draft of the screenplay. Michael Gracey, a former animator who has lined up a few projects to direct but has not started them yet,...

Andrew Garfield's role as Spider-Man has garnered him tons of popularity with kids and adults alike, but we especially love seeing the actor use his Spidey senses to appeal to the little ones. Most recently, as Andrew embarked on the worldwide press tour for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, he hammed it up and shared lots of sweet moments with children, both by himself and with girlfriend Emma Stone. Andrew taught kids with autism how to surf in Australia and planted trees in the park, and he and Emma posed with a group of youngsters in Shanghai. We've rounded up some of the cutest pictures of Andrew spending time with his smallest, most excited fans in honor of his 31st birthday on Wednesday. Keep reading to see them all now. DJ Snake and Lil Jon's "Turn Down For What" was released late last year and, in the months since, has sold millions of copies, been playing on repeat at college parties across the country, and, perhaps most impressively, birthed a whole new pop-culture catchphrase. Urban Dictionary defines it as such: "Rhetorical question used by teenagers. 'Turn up' is the act of getting drunk and high and being reckless so 'turn down' would mean sobering up. Turn down for what is really saying I am f*cked up and will continue to be all night no matter what. The only appropriate answer to this question would be 'nothing.'" One might think that the man behind those words would agree with this, but in an interview with the rapper, Rolling Stone's Simon Vozick-Levinson found out that there actually are a few times Lil Jon turns down. "Two things: Turn down for sleep and the police.

For six seasons of The L Word, Mia Kirshner played one of the most polarizing lesbian characters of all time. At the end of her run on the show, queer women might have been divided on Jenny Schecter's likability, but one thing we could all agree on was that Kirshner was a remarkable actress. She embraced every incarnation of Jenny, from the manatee-conversing depressed artist to the gum-spitting, manic movie-maker, and infused her own affection for the character into her portrayal. After The L Word, Kirshner wrote a book called I Live Here, a four-volume anthology about vanishing communities around the world. Her travels even inspired her to raise funds for a juvenile boys' prison Malawi. These days, Kirshner can be seen on Syfy's new post-apocalyptic drama, Defiance, where she plays Kenya, the owner of the town's brothel, as well as the mayor's sister.

Today, it seems audiences know "Bye Bye Birdie" only from the prominent mention of it on "Mad Men," when the Sterling Cooper agency tried to copy Ann-Margret's minimalist opening number for a diet soda commercial. But when the movie musical premiered 50 years ago (on April 4, 1963), it was a huge smash. It made an instant star out of the Swedish-born actress, as well as boosting the fame of co-stars Dick Van Dyke and Paul Lynde. Based on the Broadway hit musical, "Bye Bye Birdie" was seen as a trenchant pop cultural satire at the time. Everyone knows that Conrad Birdie, the hip-swiveling rocker who is drafted into the Army, and who stages a publicity stunt on the Ed Sullivan show by agreeing to kiss a teen fan before reporting for duty, is inspired by Elvis Presley, who had to put his career on hold in 1958 when he was drafted. In the new feature release Hello I Must Be Going, Lynskey wows us again with her subtle yet beautiful performance of Amy but that should come as no surprise since we know what she’s capable of from seeing her in such projects as Heavenly Creatures, But I’m A Cheerleader, The L Word and the upcoming Perks Of Being A Wallflower.
