The title of Waylon Payne’s upcoming second album is a mouthful. The Nashville-based singer-songwriter’s Blue Eyes, the Harlot, the Queer, the Pusher, & Me derives its name from a bleak period in Payne’s life when he was in the grips of a debilitating drug addiction and grieving the death of his mother, “Help Me Make It Through the Night” singer Sammi Smith. One of Payne’s friends in their self-described “drug den” would regularly sing Kris Kristofferson’s “The Silver Tongued Devil and I,” prompting Payne to spit...

On February 7th, Aubrie Sellers will unveil Far From Home, the follow-up to her 2016 debut album New City Blues, which was released four years ago this week. Sellers continues to cover a wide range of musical and emotional territory with the advance tracks from the forthcoming LP — the latest, “Lucky Charm,” finds the often-contemplative singer-songwriter in a sweet, light, and romantic mood.
Buzzing with swirling rock guitar and pounding rhythm, “Lucky Charm” turns negatives into positives as Sellers finds herself relentlessly followed by a sure sign of bad luck — a black cat.

Three weeks away from the release of her sophomore LP, Far From Home, Aubrie Sellers showcases the tender, yet tenuous aspects of budding romance with an intimate acoustic performance of “Haven’t Even Kissed Me Yet.” Halting and poignant, the lyrics offer an uneasy, yet brutally frank assessment of where a burgeoning relationship may or may not be headed, as Sellers vulnerably sorts out the details of a conversation that’s happening only in her mind at the moment but still feels inevitable.

“Doesn’t the sun ever shine here?” cracks Lee Ann Womack, spiking the last word with her bright Texas twang. She’s been in Brooklyn for the better part of a December week, the skies a mostly unremitting gray, and with a storm now on the way. “It’s so gloomy! But it’s good for making country music — my kind of country, anyway.” Frankly, it makes her want to drink. But it’s early afternoon and there’s work to do, so she heads for the cooler filled with bottled water and kombucha.

All Aubrie Sellers wants for Christmas is to beat her family in a game of “Nertz.”
Work commitments mean the singer-songwriter is hosting Christmas in L.A. this year instead of going to see the family in Texas, but despite the location change, some traditions will stay the same.
“Everyone cooks and we play a lot of music and have guitars all over the house,” she says, over the phone in Los Angeles on a recent afternoon, “but what we really love is playing games.”

It’s been three years since Miranda Lambert released The Weight of These Wings, a double-disc examination of the regrets, rebounds, and emotional resets that follow a divorce. At 24 tracks, the album’s running time gave her more than enough room to indulge her musical whims, from impressionistic Americana — a sound that nodded to the moody murk and woozy, water-colored production of Emmylou Harris’ Wrecking Ball — to raw, rough-edged roots-rock. The result was a supersized record that didn’t consolidate her strengths as much as emphasize their full, unabridged scope.

Miranda Lambert continues to shake off the emotional heaviness of 2017’s The Weight of These Wings, releasing the uptempo rocker “Mess With My Head” on Friday as the latest preview of her upcoming album. Channeling the plainspoken toughness of Pink along with the sleek, new-wave power pop of the Cars, the song — which Lambert wrote with Luke Dick and the Highwomen’s Natalie Hemby — pits the immediacy of Jay Joyce’s inventive production against a relatable theme of ignoring one’s instincts.

It’s early evening on Friday at Chicago’s Country LakeShake Festival, and in a few minutes Miranda Lambert will perform her first full set in eight months, headlining the day’s all-women lineup. But prior to taking the stage, she’s watching Maren Morris’ set from the wings, tapping her white boots along with the rhythm.
It’s an appropriate way for Lambert to make an official reentry to the touring circuit. She’s made it routine to boost other up-and-coming female artists and will be taking only women — including Morris,...

For the record, Lee Ann Womack does not smoke, despite the fact that the artist is holding a lit cigarette on the cover of her new album. And yes, she says, she knows “it’s not cool to smoke.”
But then if Womack had cared about what is and isn’t cool, she probably wouldn’t have made The Lonely, the Lonesome, and the Gone – one of the year’s most fearless and soulful albums to come out of Nashville this side of Chris Stapleton.

Nashville, Tenn. — The Band Perry has performed something like 15 times over the last 10 days, finishing an 18-month saga that was the making of their second album with a grueling appearance schedule.
The brother-sister trio glammed it up at the Academy of Country Music Awards and headlined a charity concert in Las Vegas. They hit "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" and taped a segment for "Dancing With the Stars" in Los Angeles, got a shoutout along the way from Justin Timberlake and landed "Pioneer" at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. The album sold 129,000 copies this week, exceeding estimates by 20 percent or more.
Talk about landing the dismount.
"In this day and age of the music business to get a chance to even allow us to have the opportunity to record again is not something lost on us," Kimberly Perry said.
"Pioneer" will be one of the most talked about albums on Music Row this year.
