Exclusive: Justin Calen-Chenn, a staff writer on Netflix’s recent crime action series The Brothers Sun from creators Brad Falchuk and Byron Wu, has signed with M88 for management.
Starring Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh, Justin Chien and Sam Song Li, the show watched as Charles Sun (Chien), a Taipei gangster who’d settled into his life as a ruthless killer, headed to L.A. to protect his mother and younger brother after his father was shot by a mysterious assassin.
Calen-Chenn drew on much of his own personal life experience in the writers’ room, having been homeless as a teenager and fallen into a life of crime before departing that life many years later after a severe tragedy occurred.
Previously serving as an executive story editor on the second season of Peacock’s Bel-Air, from EPs including Will Smith and Malcolm Spellman, the Taiwanese-American creative is a writer and co-producer on the forthcoming third season.

Basketball idol Michael Jordan played hardball with Carmelo Anthony at the negotiating table in 2011. It inspired the younger NBA star on a business journey that has led him this week to forming a 750 million private equity fund, Isos7 Growth Equity.

It’s easy to forget that in 2008, basketball fans wondered if LeBron James — years away from the first of his four NBA titles — was clutch enough to win the big one. Kobe Bryant was considered a selfish player who’d influenced the departure of star center Shaquille O’Neal from the Lakers. And the USA Basketball team, made up of top pros, languished as an also-ran that hadn’t made the 2006 world finals. As the stirring doc, The Redeem Team, shows, that changed when Bryant joined fellow stars training for a chance to win in the 2008 Beijing Games. His reason? As player Carmelo Anthony hilariously recalls, “He said, ‘I’m tired of watching y’all lose.’” Their historic rise as a true team under the magic touch of Duke University’s Coach K, Mike Krzyzewski, thrills because, “They all had things they needed to prove,” says director Jon Weinbach. And along with Beijing gold for Bryant,...

Two of the subjects of the new Netflix sports documentary The Redeem Team, Dwyane Wade and Dwight Howard, appeared at a special screening of the film. This film will tell the story of the 2008 US men’s Olympic Basketball team, which included the late basketball legend Kobe Bryant and came back from behind to win Gold in a massive comeback after a bitter loss in 2004.
Other former members of the team besides Bryant included Wade, Howard, Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James. This feature-length documentary has some of the same filmmaking talent behind it as The Last Dance, the hugely successful sports documentary miniseries about the career of Michael Jordan and his final season with the Chicago Bulls.

There was a moment late in the 2008 men’s basketball gold medal match in Beijing — a tense matchup between a superstar-filled United States team and reigning world champions Spain — when Dwyane Wade drives with the ball past a defender, stopping short just as his feet hit the paint. Wade then kicks the ball out to Kobe Bryant, open and just beyond the three point line.
“I found him across the court, he jabbed, raised up and hit a three. It was at that moment that we realized it was over,” recalled Wade Thursday night while standing on the red carpet for the Netflix documentary The Redeem Team outside Netflix’s Tudum Theater in Hollywood. He knows the play well because it’s one of his favorites from the game, one that ended with gold medals around the necks of Wade, Bryant, LeBron James,...

Colin Kaepernick. Cher. George Clooney. Charlize Theron. Sherry Lansing. Dwyane Wade. Barbara Broccoli. Jennifer Hudson. This may seem like a disparate group of powerful people in the fields of entertainment and sports. And all these people have entrusted the same organization to help them run their charities, the Entertainment Industry Foundation.

A potentially awkward changing of the guard is looming when and if LeBron James becomes the all-time leading scorer in the National Basketball Assn. That’s because the person he will surpass is fellow Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who used an occasion today to once again knock James.
Abdul-Jabbar was handing out the new Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Trophy to James’ teammate, Carmelo Anthony, as the NBA’s Social Justice Champion for the 2020-21 season before today’s game against the Denver Nuggets.
That’s when he once again took public issue with James. Abdul-Jabbar has already gone on the record against James several times this season.
James is in second place on the NBA’s all-time leading scorer list. It’s anticipated he’ll become the all-time leader at some point next season unless injury intervenes.
While Abdul-Jabbar said he has no problem with James beating the record on the court.
