Loosely based on the comic series by Mark Millar and J. G. Jones, Timur Bekmambetov’s Wanted was a stylized action movie starring James McAvoy, Angelina Jolie, and Morgan Freeman. The film was a critical and commercial success upon its release in 2008, grossing over $342 million worldwide, so it came as no surprise when the studio got the ball rolling on Wanted 2; But here we are, sixteen years later, and there’s no sequel in sight.
Michael Brandt, one of the co-writers of the original movie, told MovieWeb that while a script for Wanted 2 exists, he fears that the momentum to get it made has been lost.
“We had an idea for a sequel. We pitched it, wrote it. And it seems like there was some real interest in the studio to make it,” Brandt said. “And then Timur, who directed the first one, absolutely was interested as well.

In a recent article in The Hollywood Reporter, writer Devin Grayson and artist J.G. Jones described the insidious battle they had to fight with the lawyers and contract writers at Marvel in order to be paid for the film rights to a character they had created. The character, Yelena Belova (played by Florence Pugh) first appeared in "Inhumans" #5 in March of 1999, when she had adopted the mantle of Black Widow from Natasha Romanoff (played in the movies by Scarlett Johansson). Yelena plays a major part in "Black Widow," and, being part of the MCU, would go on to appear in at least one additional installment...

“I made macaroni.” That line, from Hawkeye episode 5 “Ronin,” launched one of the most exciting developments in the MCU’s phase four: the friendship between Kate Bishop and Yelena Belova. Played with irreverent pluck by Florence Pugh, Belova was not only the breakout character in Black Widow, but also a key part of Marvel’s future plans, joining Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine’s team of misfits. If early reaction to Yelena is any indication, then the Marvel Cinematic Universe can continue its popularity, even as it loses original heroes like Tony Stark and Steve Rogers.
Like every other part of the MCU, Yelena Belova has her roots in the comics. First introduced in 1999’s Inhumans #5, Yelena was created by writer Devon Grayson and artist J.G. Jones as an antagonist and eventual ally to Black Widow Natasha Romanov. Given the important role that Belova played in Black Widow and Hawkeye,...

In July 2021, Scarlett Johansson stunned Hollywood with a lawsuit accusing Disney of breach of contract for sending Black Widow day-and-date to Disney+, a move her lawyers said diminished its box office (and the star’s backend compensation). As that legal battle stretched into the summer, two other Black Widow stakeholders were quietly seeking what they believed they were owed. The comic book creators behind Yelena Belova, the character played by Florence Pugh, spent months in a back-and-forth with Marvel to receive payment for her appearance in the film.
Writer Devin Grayson and artist J.G. Jones believed they would take home 25,000 each for her appearance in Black Widow thanks to paperwork they signed outlining how much they would receive for films, TV shows, video games and action figures featuring Yelena. Spoilers follow for the ending of "Wanted."
Few movies can claim to end with a character cursing directly at the camera, but "Wanted" fits the bill. This is that other Morgan Freeman comic book movie from the summer of 2008. "Wanted" hit theaters three weeks before "The Dark Knight," and some of its cast members — James McAvoy, Angelina Jolie, and Chris Pratt — would go on to star in Marvel movies in the years to come. However, this film deviates from its comic book source material, jettisoning the supervillain aspect of the plot.

When you really think about it, Justice League is probably one of DC’s marquee titles to have seen the fewest changes in scribes over the course of this decade. After Geoff Johns set the bar with his now legendary run during the New 52 days, Bryan Hitch ran with the ball upon the start of Rebirth. And, now, it’s Christopher Priest who’s tasked with handling the publisher’s premier superhero team.
While none of us can be too sure of the selection process that allows someone to land such a gig, a personnel shift makes a lot of sense at this point. After all, with the Justice League movie having debuted in theaters not long ago, what better way to create a friendly jumping on point for new readers than with a new creative team?

Some of the best Christmas gifts I received as a youth were graphic novels. Strange Fruit #1
Writers:J.G. Jones and Mark Waid
Artist: J.G. Jones
Letterer Deron Bennett
Publisher Boom! Studios
Strange Fruit # 1 deals with racism during the 1920s. The title of the comic makes reference to a famous Billie Holiday song “Strange Fruit”, which dealt with the lynching and death of blacks. On that note, Strange Fruit dives straight into racism and tension head first. Jones and Waid produce a strong premise, but weak writing. The writing suffers from a lack of in depth characterization for the characters and a continuous jumping about in the plot. However, the artwork from Jones is priceless in its exquisiteness and attention to detail. The comic is issue one of four and leaves a lot of space to grow.
The story opens in 1927 Chatterlee, Mississippi. A great trouble faces Chatterlee as the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 is coming, and levees need to be built to protect the town.

On the surface, the title of Final Crisis feels like a misnomer. How can there even be a “final” crisis? There will always be a DC Universe, there will always be earth-shattering dangers, and there will always be heroes to ensure the end is never really the end. But the strength of Final Crisis lies in that it recognizes this, and uses this fact as the crux of the entire event: the promotional tagline was, after all, “Heroes die. Legends live forever.” The characters and stories of the DC Universe are timeless, never-ending, and very much alive in the way that language can be said to be alive. It’s from this angle...

So as you can tell I’m pretty excited about what Lemire and Kindt are doing in recent happenings in Valiant comics, but before the current Valiant universe one of, if not the the major player in the original universe from the ’90s, one Jim Shooter, was ousted and went on to create Defiant comics. Among those that went with him was David Lapham, an artist/writer who would go on to win Eisners for his independent work. Lapham would be the artist on the debut comic from Defiant, but before he did that, before anyone did anything we could put in our hands, we got Mongrel. We never saw him again.
It’s no secret that the medium of comic books, at least in the United States, is mostly dominated by characters that have been around for decades and come with not only a personal history, but in many cases multiple histories.

In recent years, comics conventions have become less about the comics creators, who crafted (and continue to craft) the characters beloved by pop culture and more about celebrity guests. Yes, it is fun to get a picture made with your favorite Star Trek captain or Doctor Who companion, but from my personal experience as well as that of con-goers and the crowded nature of big shows like San Diego and New York Comic Con, it seems like the comics have been pushed aside for “geek culture” celebrities. Some conventions might as well take out the “comic” in “comic con”. However, some shows continue to put comics and creators first, and one of them is East Coast Comicon.
East Coast Comicon began as Asbury Park Comic Con and was held in 2012 at a converted bowling alley/rock club in Asbury Park, NJ. It was founded by independent comics creator Cliff Galbraith...

Back in 2008, Wanted came out and was a decent hit for Universal. Based on a comic miniseries by Mark Millar and J.G. Jones, the film starred a relatively unknown James McAvoy and managed to turn make $340+ million on a $75 million budget. Ever since, rumblings of a sequel have ranged from "Oh, definitely!" to "We'll see." Well, Coming Soon had a chance to speak with that film's producers and find out what the status of that film is- now that we're six years removed from the original. One of them, Marc Platt, was willing to speak candidly about where they are in that process.
His answers, though, lead me to believe that we're still at the "wait and see" stage and, with so much time having gone by, I get the feeling it would take a major development for this thing to happen.

One of the more entertaining action flicks I’ve seen in the last few years is Timur Bekmambetov’s adaptation of Wanted, starring Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy as bullet-bending assassins fighting for their lives. DC Comics will be releasing a wave of one-shot steampunk variant covers for many of their current New 52 titles in February, featuring some impressive art from artists such as Dave Johnson, Klaus Janson, Howard Chaykin and more. At first we we’re hoping that DC was cooking up a line-wide Elseworlds-style event (eg, Gotham by Gaslight), but that doesn’t appear to be the case after all. We’re now hoping this may be a test from the publisher to see how many fans would like to see more of these characters placed in a Victorian-era setting. There certainly seems to be a growing number of steampunk-inspired cosplayers at comic book conventions across the country – perhaps the publisher has taken notice.
You can check out the full list of all the titles getting the steampunk treatment along with previews of the covers below.

Even though this book has been dropping once a month like clockwork, so far anyway, the wait between issues has been excruciating. It may have only debuted two months ago, yet the tale of Gilad Anna-Padda is so expertly handled that writer Greg Pak has created a monster with his fans. But does Pak’s lightning remain trapped in its epic bottle, or are some crack starting to shine in the warriors armour?
After declaring a war on the gods last month, Gilad and his daughter Xaran head to the local K-Mart to stock up on some munitions. After some father-daughter bonding, the kind that only two immortal warriors could have, the two...

Idw Procures the Rights to Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
The original novel featured illustrations by Ralph Steadman so making it a graphic novel actually makes sense. This could be a chance to look at this classic of gonzo journalism and redeem its reputation after the 1996 film starring Johnny Depp got mixed reviews. No artist, writer, or release date has been announced, but Idw could announce more details at New York Comic Con. This book would be perfect for Warren Ellis, who basically wrote a future version of Hunter S. Thompson in his masterpiece Transmetropolitan. No matter who writes or draws it, this will be a comic, like the Fight Club sequel, that will appeal to non-comics fan and continue Idw’s tradition of having excellent literary adaptations, like Darwyn Cooke’s Eisner winning Richard Stark’s Parker comics.

DC Comics continues its release of a year's worth of Watchmen prequels with Before Watchmen: Comedian / Rorschach Deluxe Edition. This hardcover collection contains issues one through six of the Comedian title and issues one through four of Rorschach. Both books were penned by Brian Azzarello with art provided by J.G. Jones for Comedian and Lee Bermejo for Rorschach.
Before Watchmen: Comedian takes the reader back in time and gives insight into what makes Edward Blake tick. The Comedian crosses paths with Bobby Kennedy, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Marilyn Monroe, and other historical figures. You'll be shocked at some of the tragedies attributed to Mr. Blake.
Writer Brian Azzarello really steps out on a limb for Before Watchmen: Comedian. He spins complex and engaging tales which tie certain catastrophic world events to one individual. The entertaining ride features alternate historical takes which could be construed by many as patriotic and political heresy.

Fans of Wanted, the movie adaptation of Mark Millar and J.G. Jones’ comicbook, we finally have some news on the long awaited Wanted 2. I mean, four years is a long wait in sequel time these days, after all.
The problem with making Wanted 2 has not been the demand for it, it made over $300 million, but that the first film ended with the death of Fox, who was played by Angelina Jolie. Clearly, the studios would want her star power involved. But thankfully, they have moved on from trying to resurrect the character, and moving forward with a new femme fatale. James McAvoy’s growing popularity has also made things difficult to schedule the project. But it looks like Wesley will be taking Fox’s role, as the mentor.
Derek Haas, who co-wrote the first film’s screenplay with Michael Brandt, are back on the sequel, after first disagreeing...

Yeah, I know. The illustrious Mike Gold has already written at length as to why the Baltimore Comic-Con is an amazing experience. But Mike’s career in comics is older than I am. I had thought, for only a second, that maybe I should just move on and try another column to piss people off. But here I sit, and man, I still can’t stop smiling. So, screw it, you’re gonna hear (again) about the Baltimore Comic-Con. Maybe you’ll get a different perspective. This was my first trip to the Charm City, and I think Mike may have underplayed just how awesome this shindig is. Oh Baltimore Comic-Con, how do I love thee… Let me count the ways.
As many here have read my recent tirades about the Wizard Conventions may know… I have been seriously duped. I was raised on a convention where I honestly believed...

Timur Bekmambetov is a busy man. The evidence is that I can finally spell his name without looking it up. He’s been hard at work bringing Seth Grahame-Smith’s best selling novel Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter to the big screen amid heavy buzz. It finally graces us with our presence this Friday.
Now, attention turns to his next projects. While he’s been struggling with Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea and Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, work has finally progressed on Wanted 2. Wanted, an adaptation of a Mark Millar/J.G. Jones comic book that starred James McAvoy, Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman, was a big hit back in 2008. The ending killed many of the main characters (and stars), so it’s been a daunting task, but sounds like Bekmambetov had a breakthrough, according to IndieWire.

Recently, DC Comics stirred up some controversy when they announced that they would be releasing prequels of possibly the greatest comic book of all-time, Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen, without Moore and Gibbons’ involvement (no surprise there). The series was turned into a fairly successful movie by 300′s Zack Snyder (thank god this was pre-Sucker Punch) but now, because people can’t leave classics alone, we have seven new limited series that take place before the events of Watchmen. To DC’s credit, the series features some of the best talent the company has, from Brian Azzarello (100 Bullets), Darwyn Cooke (DC: The New Frontier) and J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5) to Joe Kubert (Tor) and son Andy Kubert (1602) and J.G. Jones (Wanted).
It looks like DC Comics want to have a wide audience for this one, beyond the average comic book fan. Today, thanks to EW.com, we...

The Before Watchmen Prequel comics. To buy or not to buy?
I’m getting ahead of myself. On the internet when news comes out about a controversial comic book project it seems as if the duty of every comic book geek to chime in with their opinion–without the product in their hand. The internet was invented so that people could bitch, right? So what I should really be asking is:
To judge or not to judge? First let’s look at what DC Comics is doing.
DC Comics announced early Wednesday that they are releasing seven Before Watchmen mini-series that will be prequels to the landmark graphic novel, Watchmen. Before you say it, take a look at the creative forces behind the books and see if you’re still in rampage mode.
• Rorschach (4 issues) – Writer: Brian Azzarello. Artist: Lee Bermejo
• Minutemen (6 issues) – Writer/Artist: Darwyn Cooke
• Comedian (6 issues) – Writer: Brian Azzarello.

We brought you the news last year when Angelina Jolie decided not to reprise her role as Fox in the follow up to the Timur Bekmambetov directed adaptation of the Mark Millar and J.G. Jones comic book, Wanted. Shortly after her departure, all talk about Wanted 2 seemed to come to a halt.
Now, THR reports that Universal Pictures has now hired Derek Haas and Michael Brandt who, along with Chris Morgan wrote the screenplay for the original film, to pen the sequel. Back in 2009, Evan Spiliotopoulos (Snow White and the Huntsman) was brought on board to work on the script, and Haas and Brandt will now work from his material for the sequel.
You may remember back in 2009, Timur Bekmabetov revealed that plans were in place to bring Angelina Jolie‘s character, Fox back to life for the sequel. Though she bailed out of the sequel back then, presumably due to scheduling conflicts,...

Most writers hope they’ll see at least one of their creations brought to life on the big screen one day, but comic writer Mark Millar has already been lucky enough to see two — and he has at least two more on the way.
Besides his secret project with Leinil Francis Yu, Millar is set to bring his and artist Steve McNiven’s antihero story “Nemesis” to life with director Tony Scott. And with the success of films like “Wanted” and “Kick-Ass,” it doesn’t appear Hollywood will stop throwing money at him anytime soon.
[Update: Mark Millar has contacted MTV News to clarify several elements that were misunderstood in the original interview. We've edited the post and placed these corrections in Bold/Capitalized text. -Rm]

It’s a very expensive film, it’s got a lot of big set pieces,” he told MTV News while promoting his recently launched "CLiNT" comics magazine. “So the nice thing is, it means we can hopefully afford who we want to work with.

Back in April, a rumor surfaced that "Twilight" star Kristen Stewart was in the running to play the female lead in a sequel to "Wanted," Timur Bekmambetov's follow-up to the 2008 film based on Mark Millar and J.G. Jones' comic book series.
When MTV News sat down with Stewart during the press junket for "Twilight: Eclipse," we checked in with the actress to find out if there was any truth to the rumor that she'll be following in Angelina Jolie's footsteps alongside returning "Wanted" star James McAvoy.
"It's weird to answer questions like this," said Stewart, who simply stated that "the only two projects that I am confirmed in now are 'On The Road' and '[Twilight:] Breaking Dawn.'"
The original report had Stewart tagged to play a "young, ass-kicking assassin in the Fraternity," and Bekmambetov's top choice to star opposite McAvoy's reluctant assassin, Wesley Gibson.

Happy Memorial Day!!
One of my favorite albums of all time is Elephant Shell by Tokyo Police Club. I’ve spun that album about 7,000 times since it came out in 2008 and I’ve yet to get sick of it. Their newest, Champ, just came out and it’s pretty good. It could never live up to Elephant Shell for me, so considering that I think it’s pretty successful. I dunno — can a band ever live up to their one album that dazzled you? I don’t think so, and it’s unfair to expect them to.
So welcome to This Week in Comics, where every day is a comic book and most of them don’t live up to anything.

With the Chicago Comics and Entertainment Expo coming soon to the shores of Lake Michigan, it seems that the con has been given it's first scandal. In a back-and-forth flame war posted yesterday on his message board, Kick-Ass writer Mark Millar got into a little wordy wrestling match, when fans started discussing the film's upcoming premiere in the Second City.
A board member with the handle "Wanted2Vmt" posted, "Can't wait to see this film flop at C2E2. Who's gonna see it when they can see Gaiman, a real writer, instead?" Mark Millar, known well for his Scottish rage, was quick to fire back, inciting a war of words with his would-be fans.
"There's not a way Kick-Ass won't take over the con in Chicago. Gaiman is a sissy fairy who writes for emo-goths anyways. Let those black boot wearing ninny's go listen to their goblin king whine about his wee shiters.

Last week, word broke that Angelina Jolie had turned down the chance to reprise her role as Fox in "Wanted 2." Despite initial rumors claiming that the potential sequel had been shelved by Universal, "Wanted" co-creator Mark Millar has indicated the film will proceed without Jolie.
“'Wanted 2' will be certainly going ahead, because the first one made too much money for them not to do a sequel," explained Millar during an interview with Stv. "What I heard was that there’s filming this year for a release at the end of next year, so the plot that they had will have some modifications now. Her character will have to be written out completely. We’ll see what happens, I don’t know, it changes every day. Again, things get so out of your hands with film because 300 people are involved, whereas with comics it’s just you and your artist.

For well over a year, Mark Millar has been talking about the proposed sequel to "Wanted", based upon his hit creator owned comic miniseries with artist J.G. Jones. The film, staring James McAvoy as Wesley Gibson and Angelina Jolie as Fox was a surprise hit during its release in 2008, making a sequel inevitable. And according to Millar, "Wanted 2" may finally be close to going in front of the cameras.
"I can't remember exactly when it's going to start shooting — I don't even know if I can officially say — but it will be soon and the script is almost ready," said Millar during an interview with IGN. Millar also disclosed where the sequel would pick up and reiterated that it would have a "global" scope.
"['Wanted 2'] follows immediately at the end of the first movie and the fraternity is down in America. But there's an international fraternity, which we had in the [miniseries] as well.

Readers, I apologize on behalf of comics this week. Not a whole lot of good new stuff (save Forgetless) is coming out this week, so my selections for this week’s installment were a struggle. To make matters worse, this will be the last installment of the year because I’ll soon be on vacation and I don’t want to have to do sh*t when I’m supposed to be loungin’.
Don’t worry, I’m mean to return from vacation on January 3rd. So expect more opinionated rambling then.
Since this column is more pessimistic than usual, here are the things I liked this year.
Best New Series: Chew, featuring a totally bizarre premise that no TV network would touch. Let’s wait for Cinemax to prove me wrong.
Best Collected Edition: Final Crisis hardcover by Grant Morrison, J.G. Jones, Doug Mahnke & Others. Morrison uses the good vs.
Don’t worry, I’m mean to return from vacation on January 3rd. So expect more opinionated rambling then.
Since this column is more pessimistic than usual, here are the things I liked this year.

It's "9" week here on Splash Page, and while the post-apocalyptic animated adventure doesn't have too much in common with the comic book world on the surface, there are always links between the film reel and the paneled page. The Shane Acker-directed film is no exception, as several of the movie's voice actors and production crew have direct ties to comics.
Behold the following "9" actors and producers, all of whom are connected to the comic book community in some way, shape or form:
Timur Bekmambetov: His name might be unfamiliar, but "9" producer Timur Bekmambetov's work became surprisingly popular barely a year ago. Bekmambetov is the director of "Wanted," the Angelina Jolie-starring comic book adaptation of Mark Millar and J.G. Jones' graphic novel.
Bekmambetov has already discussed plans to proceed with "Wanted 2" despite the apparent death of one of the previous film's leads. Still, the film...

I think we found the reason for her to come back.
Those were the words director Timur Bekmambetov used after stating to MTV he would like Angeline Jolie to reprise her role as Fox for the planned sequel, ‘Wanted 2.’ Now, for those of you who haven’t seen the first ‘Wanted,’ you’re probably already spoiled on this one, but just in case that first quote didn’t reveal too much, be warned. The rest of what Bekmambetov had to say about ‘Wanted’ and its sequel definitely does spoil the ending of the first film.
If you remember from the first film, we have a recovery room with the baths of wax. We know how to do this, but it’s still tough to do, because the bullet is inside her head.
But there has to be a reason for her to come back… and we know the reason.
