Evelyn Lozada Marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month With ‘Turn Hurt Into Joy’ Campaign (Exclusive)
Evelyn Lozada is marking Domestic Violence Awareness Month by turning a "negative" situation "into a positive."
On Monday, the 41-year-old reality star, in connection with the Evelyn Lozada Foundation, launched the Turn Hurt Into Joy online campaign to raise money for charities that help survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault throughout the month of October.
The campaign, which will reward a lucky winner (who will be chosen in November) with an original Ines Di Santo wedding gown, is a “testament that a negative can be transformed into a positive,” Lozada tells Et.
“Several years ago, I wore a beautifully crafted Ines Di Santo original design as I prepared to enter into one of the most sacred and memorable unions of my life,” she explains of her short marriage to former NFL player Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson, which ended after the onetime professional athlete head-butted her during a verbal argument. “I was married in 2012, three weeks later I was in...

"Girls, I know this must feel very strange," the woman in the black robe says. She is older, stern, severe, authoritarian; she's addressing a group women seated in a circle, all of whom have been stripped of their reproductive rights, forcibly separated from their families and remanded to sexual slavery. "But ordinary is just what you're used to," she continues. "This might not seem ordinary to you right now. But, after a time, it will. This will become ordinary."

Nintendo's brand new Switch console appears to have enjoyed a relatively smooth launch so far, and while it's too early to say whether it's been a success, American outlet GameStop has already described it as one of the "strongest" console launches of recent years.

Many of us have different opinions on who played Batman best, but we'd be willing to throw out a far left candidate: Will Arnett.
That's right. Will Arnett plays Batman in a whole other way, by voicing Lego Batman. He was such a scene-stealer in The Lego Movie that he got his own spin-off, which has to say something, right?
Arnett is no stranger to voice work as he stars as the titular "Bojack Horseman" on the Netflix series. Playing a horse who once starred on a popular sitcom and now has fallen from grace, this is another voice performance that is so good, it makes Bojack-- an anthropomorphic horse, feel real. We'd argue Arnett does the same with the Lego version of Batman.

At a recent hands-on event, we got to have an early go on Nintendo's brand new console. Here's what we made of the Switch...
It’s fascinating to think that, a decade ago, Nintendo turned the games industry on its head with its hand-waving, vase-breaking, cat-frightening Wii remotes. Suddenly, rival companies Microsoft and Sony were clamouring to bring in their own answer to that control system - the kind of simple yet effective idea that made the Wii one of the most accessible and best-selling consoles of all time.

1.1 The Original
Like that long awaited locomotive pulling into Tucson for the first time, Westworld is finally here. Many at HBO have anticipated this day with just as much reverence and optimism as the 1880 denizens of that famous railroad town from the Old West, watching anxiously as the smoke clouds plumed beneath the fading Arizona light. Of course, in spite of the dust, horses, gunplay, and even coal-powered engine from that oft-romanticized era, Westworld is not a Western; nay, for all we know it’s not even located in North America.
Rather, this is the culmination of several years’ worth of work, reshoots, ballooning budgets, and the high expectations that come implicit for the prestige network, particularly when it...

The new Westworld TV series feat. Anthony Hopkins comes to Sky Atlantic on the 4th of October, and does not disappoint…
Up until its last half-hour when Yul Brynner’s fearsome robot gunslinger engages relentless pursuit mode, Michael Crichton’s 1973 film Westworld is a romp. Its premise—the android attractions in a high-tech theme park malfunction with deadly consequences—may be nightmarish, but the film is rollicking. There’s a lively bar brawl set to old-timey piano, a cartoonish prison-break, a comedy underdog who appoints himself sheriff… Any blood we see is poster paint red and the brothel scenes now feel as chaste as Sunday school.
HBO’s TV adaptation goes a different route. Devoid of high-jinks, it starts serious and stays that way. This is cerebral sci-fi that asks more complex questions than ‘what if the humanoid attractions in a high-tech theme park malfunctioned with deadly consequences?...

Remember a few years ago when Universal was working on a Battlestar Galactica feature film? Turns out it's still happening and it has some exciting new names attached. We first have to go all the way back to 2009 when work on this film project first started. The 2003/4 Syfy reboot of the 70s series was just wrapping up and Universal got together with Glen A. Larson to start work in a big-screen version. The project was meant to be a reimagining of the story which did not continue with the continuity of the original television series or the reboot but would include the characters we know like Adama, Starbuck, and Baltar. Bryan Singer was attached to direct at one point and in 2011 John Orloff was close to writing, telling Deadline “I have wanted to write this movie since I was 12 years old, and built a Galactica model from scratch out of balsa wood, cardboard, old model parts and LEDs. I love BSG, and I would pass on the job rather than frak it up.” Things were quiet for a bit and then in 2014 Universal hired Transcendence writer Jack Paglen (who's also worked on Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant) for screenwriting duties. Earlier this year they picked up Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark of Bluegrass Films to produce but now we get to the really exciting news. Deadline reports on a new writer and a possible new director: The long-awaited big-screen transfer of the Glen Larson 1978 TV series is moving forward at Universal. Lisa Joy, who scripted and is exec producer on HBO’s series Westworld, is writing the script. Francis Lawrence is circling the movie to direct...Numerous directors have taken cracks at the feature film version over the years. It gives Universal a strong chance to create another tentpole franchise. This is excellent news from where I'm standing. Joy's credits also include Pushing Daisies and Burn Notice. She was also writing a film for Sony Pictures in 2014 which would have focused on female characters from Spider-Man lore, though there hasn't been any updates on that for a while. Lawrence of course ushered the last three installments of The Hunger Games franchise to screen and I'd be interested to see what his BSG would look like. Here's a tip for you though - keep Katee Sackhoff as Starbuck.

Happy New Year! And it looks to be a very happy new year for the box office as well. Star Wars: The Force Awakens remained in first place, to likely the surprise of no one, though its success is far and away going to put Avatar to shame…in its third week, it earned an estimated $88.3 million, and is only about $20 million shy of being the highest earning domestic grosser in history…and with many weeks of revenue to come, it may be a record held for a very long time.
Things are also looking much better for Daddy’s Home…with an estimated $29 million, the critically flamed Mark Wahlberg-Will Ferrell comedy has picked up $93.6 million in gross revenue, and probably cost nowhere near the $200 million of The Force Awakens. In third, The Hateful Eight made a strong climb from its tenth-place finish last week (after real totals...

Box Office: Star Wars Passes Titanic, Closes in On Avatar to Have Highest Domestic Gross of All Time
Star Wars: The Force Awakens brought in another $88.3 million in its third weekend, beating more records that we can’t even keep track of anymore. The movie has been out for three weeks and has done what took other movies months or even close to a year to accomplish. This weekend it passed Titanic to become the second highest grossing movie of all time domestically. It should pass Avatar within a day or two and it has still yet to be released in China. Worldwide, The Force Awakens has earned $1.5 billion, though that does not include all international grosses from this weekend. At the moment the film stands at number seven in terms of global earnings.
Daddy’s Home was number two this weekend; it’s done well with the holiday crowds and will easily surpass the last Will Ferrell/Mark Wahlberg comedy, The Other Guys which had a final run of $119 million.

The last few days of 2015 are spent in reflection about the year that's just wrapping up and in anticipation of the year just ahead, at least for me, and since we had our ten best list last week, this week it's time for the runners-up, the fifteen films that also filled out our year. As always, I look at this list and I think it would make a perfectly spiffy top ten if that's how things had shaken out, which is to say that the only real purpose of any of these lists is to remind you of more of the experiences that were worth having in a theater. There are plenty of good films that aren't on either of my lists this year. That doesn't mean I didn't like them or they're not good. It just means that these films meant more to me for some reason. For now,...

2016 is looking to get off to a wonderful start. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is entering its third frame and is now joined by the wide release of Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight, playing in over 2,400 theaters. The largest first weekend of the new year came in 2010 when Avatar was playing for its third weekend and the top twelve grossed over $209 million. This weekend might fall just shy of that number, but just a few hundred thousand here and there could push it over the top and deliver yet another box office record during Star Wars' impressive run. The Force Awakens dropped 39.8% last weekend and has since crossed $625 million in record time. Come the end of this weekend it will be very close to topping Avatar's all-time domestic record of $760 million, if it doesn't actually beat it. A third weekend drop around 45% doesn't seem out of bounds, which would result in around $82 million.

It’s Monday evening and I’m still not able to put into words a Star Wars: The Force Awakens review. That’s not to say it was that good or that bad, myself and Cof’s Ryan have talked about it all weekend and agree that we would want to watch it again to really assess the situation. Until then, we can certainly talk about all the box office records that the movie broke. Needless to say, this one made money!

This week, Vulture will be publishing our critics’ year-end lists. Yesterday we posted TV and film. Today we talk books and music. 1. The Visiting Privilege: Collected Stories, Joy Williams A Joy Williams story tends toward a moment of anti-epiphany, when a life or a world is rearranged though the character living that life in that world who may be blind to it. She emerged as a prodigy among the minimalists of the 1970s, and this volume traces her journey to sui generis master. Her nearest cousin among American writers is Don DeLillo, but only because, as with him, nobody writes sentences like she does. A DeLillo sentence unfurls; a Williams sentence proceeds in a dazzling forward march. Here’s one: “The baby’s head is a white globe beneath my heart.” Though she treats common states — parenthood, pet ownership, alcoholism — Williams eschews the realist story writer’s bromide that in...

So here we are, smack dab in the middle of the dog days of summer (and if you don’t get that little saying, try lying out on the sidewalk in 100-degree heat for 15 minutes or so, like Fido does, and see if a light bulb doesn’t go off). The dogs are often howling in movie theaters too—at times it seems as though August has replaced January in the hearts of moviegoers as the dumping ground for pictures not really worthy of our attention (or a serious investment in the marketing department). Movies like Pixels and Fantastic Four have their perverse fascination—just how bad can they possibly be? Both were greeted with reviews so scathing and unyielding in their acidity that studio heads can only pray nothing in October, November or December will be perceived as worse, and I have to admit a certain curiosity. But that...

Oh mama! Here is the single "Woman (Oh Mama)" from Joy Williams, one-half of the now-dissolved folk group The Civil Wars. With hand-claps, chanting, marimba churning and minor harmonies, we're getting a very distinctive Zulu vibe, which may send you reeling toward your copy of "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts." "Woman" is off of Williams' forthcoming album "Venus," due this summer. Getting a very lady vibe here.

The beloved folk duo has officially called it quits.
Sad news in the music world this week as we officially say goodbye to The Civil Wars.
The beloved folk duo has truly called it quits after going on hiatus in November 2012 over what they called "internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition." Nevertheless, their sophomore self-titled album debuted atop the Billboard 200 just months later in 2013.
In a press release issued Tuesday, the Nashville pair bid farewell to their fans and offered up a final song (more on that later).
"I am saddened and disappointed by the ending of this duo, to say the very least," said vocalist Joy Williams. "Jp is a tremendous musician, and I will always be grateful for the music we were able to create together."
Williams also noted that she will continue to create new music. "I'm excited to share the music that I am writing and recording in the midst of this...

The Civil Wars, the music duo comprised of Joy Williams and John Paul White, are officially breaking up.

It’s been a long time coming, and despite the hopeful prayers of their fans, The Civil Wars is a band no longer.
Joy Williams and John Paul White announced the news today (August 5), though they’ve been on indefinite hiatus since 2012 due to “internal discord and irreconcilable difference of ambition.”
Ms. Williams, who has been pretty vocal about everything up to this point, explained, "I am saddened and disappointed by the ending of this duo, to say the very least. Jp is a tremendous musician, and I will always be grateful for the music we were able to create together."
"Looking ahead, I'm excited to share the music that I am writing and recording in the midst of this difficult transition. I've loved being back in the studio, and have missed performing live. I look forward to seeing you soon."
And as has been his custom, White completely neglected to mention his music-making mate.

Even though they separated more than a year ago, Joy Williams and John Paul White officially announced The Civil Wars’ divorce today. And they gave us all a little parting gift to remember them by to blunt the pain of realizing they are never, ever getting back together. By the time the duo released its more recent album, “The Civil Wars,” in June 2013, they were already on “hiatus,” so this news comes as a surprise to no one. The Nashville-based duo burned brightly in its short time in the spotlight, winning Grammys for best country duo/group performance and best folk album in 2012 for 2011’s “Barton Hollow.” They also performed with Taylor Swift on "Safe & Sound," a T Bone Burnett-produced track on "The Hunger Games" soundtrack. In a statement posted on their website, Williams commented, “I am saddened and disappointed by the ending of this duo, to say the very least.

After being on hiatus for a full year, country duo The Civil Wars, whose debut album Barton Hollow won two Grammys for Best Country Duo/Group Performance and Best Folk Album in 2012, has officially broken up.
That same year, a rift occurred between band members Joy Williams and John Paul White, one that was reportedly so bad that they stopped speaking to one another. A second album, titled The Civil Wars, was released in 2013, and fans noted a darker and more brooding edge to the songs – likely a result of it being recording as the conflict between Williams and White occurred. At the time, the only reason The Civil Wars gave for cancelling its tour and going on hiatus was “internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition.” Now, it appears that the band is done for good.
Neither have clarified exactly why the rift occurred, though Williams told Entertainment Weekly...

Many of us remember where we were on June 25th, 2009, the day that Michael Jackson tragically died of cardiac arrest as a result of acute propofol and benzodiazepine intoxication.
And while we’re still sad to have lost him, the late King of Pop’s legacy will continue to live on forever through his music.
On the fifth anniversary of Jackson’s death, we celebrate his life with five amazing cover versions of his hits, proving that his influence is still strongly felt anywhere music is played.

And on the hit show “Glee,” the rivalry between the New Directions and the Warblers comes to a head with a parking garage cover reminiscent of the original music video. Abraham Woodhull (Jamie Bell) had been a somewhat lackluster protagonist in the first two episodes, a farmer victimized by bad luck who has the added misfortune of consistently being the second or third smartest person in every room he’s in. The National's Matt Berninger and the Civil Wars' Joy Williams have collaborated on the theme for the new AMC show “Turn.” Listen to "Hush" in the opening credit sequence below. The song’s suspenseful, gothic folk sound sets the mood for the period drama, which recounts how spies played a key role during the Revolutionary War. “Turn” premieres on Sunday, April 6 at 9 p.m. Edt on AMC. In a press release, both Williams and Berninger said they became quick fans of the show. “When I was filled in on the premise of ‘Turn,’ and when I saw the pilot in advance, I was hooked,” Williams said. Berninger added: “I was excited about this show from the second I heard about it, so it was a big thrill when Joy asked me to help write the theme song.” Watch our editor Katie Hasty’s recent interview with Matt Berninger below the "Turn" clip.

Ivan's latest column explores what music can tell us about a character through two new UK soundtrack releases
Music is a powerful thing. It can be used to express authority or portray identity. The very act of playing music defines us, as both performers or listeners. That relationship we have with it makes for two extremely powerful soundtracks currently accompanying movies in UK cinemas: Inside Llewyn Davis and 12 Years a Slave.
Inside Llewyn Davis
"Play me something from Inside Llewyn Davis," manager Bud Grossman (F. Murray Abraham) challenges Oscar Isaac's lead in the middle of the Coen brothers' film. Llewyn responds with The Death of Queen Jane, an old ballad from the 1500s that recounts the tale of King Henry losing his wife, Jane Seymour, to gain a son. It's not a happy song.
It's also a clear statement from Llewyn: he's not afraid of sadness.
