CNN was the major winner on night one of the 42nd annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards, winning seven awards, while CNN exec VP Ken Jautz was named one of this year’s charman’s awards honorees. PBS’ “Frontline” was the most-honored program, with three Emmys.
The winners of the news categories were announced Tuesday night by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). The news and documentary Emmys were presented this year as two individual ceremonies: categories honoring TV news on Tuesday, and categories honoring documentaries on Wednesday.
“Tonight, we celebrate these news industry professionals who in the unprecedented year of 2020 navigated a global health crisis and a presidential election that shook the very bedrock of our democracy,” said Adam Sharp, President & CEO, NATAS.
Other outlets with multiple winners included CBS, Vice, the New York Times and PBS, with four each; ABC with three and Telemundo with two.

Ozy Media CEO Carlos Watson has informed the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences that he will no longer host the documentary portion of the 42nd News & Documentary Emmy Awards on Wednesday night.
Watson’s decision to step down comes following a New York Times report on Monday questioning the validity of Ozy’s various traffic claims, and revealing that Ozy co-founder Samir Rao had posed as a YouTube executive, touting Ozy’s success, during a conference call with Goldman Sachs bankers in February.
“Carlos Watson has graciously reached out to us and asked to be removed from his hosting duties tomorrow night so as not to distract the focus from the talented nominees in the documentary categories of the 42nd News & Documentary Emmy Awards,” NATAS said in a statement.
Instead, the ceremony’s three presenters will instead share hosting dutires: Columbia Journalism School professor and documentary filmmaker June Cross...

Many things can be true at the same time, a concept that first-time feature director and long-time horror scribe Simon Barrett tries to tap into with his debut “Seance.” It hints at the possibility of two ghosts within its first five minutes and the twinned ghost stories soon expand to involve all manner of other horror-centric tropes: a creepy boarding school, a mysterious new girl, a shy new friend with (maybe) a secret, even a handsome outsider who loves to lurk — along with the usual assortment of flickering lights, bloody visions, and a basement filled with archival material that might hold some answers. Yes, many things can be true at once, but “Seance” might benefit from being pared to a more streamlined story.
Barrett’s film hints at the sleeker, darker film underneath his many genre fixations; it also sets up the possibility of a followup that could better tap into those ideas.

This is it, finally, the end of the 2020 presidential election cycle. But we’still got Nov. 3 itself, and the final showdown between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, to get out of the way. PBS NewsHour will be there, as it always is, with a huge dedicated programming bloc on Tuesday’s Election Night that will be freely available to stream so long as you’ve got an internet connection and a device that can access it.
The PBS NewsHour Election Night special — which doesn’t have any kind of grandiose, catchy name — will begin at 6 p.m. Et/3 p.m. Pt, an hour before the first polls close on the East Coast and the results start to roll in. NewsHour managing editor Judy Woodruff will be running the show.
But she won’t be alone — far from it. We’ll also see Amna Nawaz, Lisa Desjardins and Amy Walter in...

"Are you alone in the house right now?" Sony has revealed a terrifying new red band trailer for the latest update of The Grudge, the horror series based on the Ju-on movies from Japan. This new take is directed by Nicolas Pesce, of The Eyes of My Mother and Piercing, and it's produced by horror master Sam Raimi. After a young mother murders her family in her own house, a single mother & detective tries to investigate and solve the case. She discovers the house is cursed by a vengeful ghost that dooms those who enter it with a violent death. Andrea Riseborough stars as the detective, with an impressive cast including Demián Bichir, John Cho, Betty Gilpin, Lin Shaye, Jacki Weaver, William Sadler, Frankie Faison, Tara Westwood, Nancy Sorel, and Stephanie Sy. There is some seriously disgusting stuff in this trailer, but that's the point - especially coming from Pesce.

Avatar star Sam Worthington headlines Fractured, a Netflix movie with a mind-bending mystery.
Fractured is part of a slate of fall season horror (and horror-adjacent) film offerings from Netflix; in this case, a mystery movie brandishing a tinge of Twilight Zone-esque themes that question the reality of its embattled protagonist played by headliner Sam Worthington.
Indeed, the film found an appropriate helmer in The Machinist director Brad Anderson, providing a rather appropriate thematic juxtaposition to the morosely surreal 2004 thriller, as Worthington plays a man who, upon the disappearance of his wife and young daughter in a hospital emergency room, discovers that their existence has seemingly been erased from the memories and records of the staff.
Fractured Trailer
The trailer for Netflix film Fractured showcases a man who’s either experiencing supernatural phenomenon affected by the space-time continuum, or is just getting gaslighted by a bored hospital staff.

"Why would I have my daughter's scarf, but not her?" Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for a mystery thriller titled Fractured, the latest from acclaimed American filmmaker Brad Anderson. Driving cross-country, Ray and his wife and daughter stop at a highway rest area where his daughter falls and breaks her arm. After a frantic rush to the hospital and a clash with the check-in nurse, Ray is finally able to get her to a doctor. While his wife and their daughter go downstairs for an Mri scan, Ray, exhausted, passes out in a chair in the lobby. Upon waking up, they have no record or knowledge of Ray's family ever being checked in. Where did they go? What happened to his family!? Sam Worthington stars, with Lily Rabe, Stephen Tobolowsky, Adjoa Andoh, Stephanie Sy, Lucy Capri, Lauren Cochrane, and Erik Athavale. Looks alright, I'm curious to find out what's up.
