European Film Awards to Take Place as Distanced Live Event as Covid-19 Cases Mount – Global Bulletin
Awards
As Europe faces a fresh wave of Covid-19, the 34th European Film Awards will take place as a distanced live event, with attendance limited to nominees and award recipients.
The in-person ceremony, which will also be broadcast and streamed from Berlin on Dec. 11, will not include the usual audience of academy members, partners and guests from the film industry and the international media.
“The decision acknowledges the deteriorating situation due to the Covid-19 pandemic in an increasing number of European countries, and in Germany,” the European Film Academy said in a statement. “The pandemic will affect all events usually taking place during the awards weekend.”
Matthijs Wouter Knol, CEO and director of the Academy, said: “This is much to our regret and we realise that it must come as a huge disappointment to many in Europe. And we, too, are very disappointed. But confronted with the responsibility for such an event,...

How can deprivation become joy? That’s not only the animating question of The Color Purple, the 1982 Alice Walker novel made into a musical in 2005, but also the operating principle behind John Doyle’s triumphant revival of that musical, starring the stupendous Cynthia Erivo in her Broadway debut. For once, the word “revival” is apt: Doyle’s intervention amounts to a kind of theatrical CPR, restarting the heart of a show that, in its original production, seemed to die before your eyes. It was difficult then to diagnose the underlying cause; the songs, by the trio of Brenda Russell, Allee Willis, and Stephen Bray, were unusually good, and Marsha Norman’s book made neat work of the difficult job of reshaping an epistolary text for the stage. The performances were fine. But something undermined those qualities, turning a story that was electrifying in print into a big, energy-sucking slog from...

Hopes that Madonna would re-claim her pop crown from Lady Gaga with "Mdna" were dashed when the album plunged on the charts shortly after its March release -- a victim of weak single choices and, some say, a lack of promotion on the Material Girl's part.
Now one high-profile producer is opening up about the experience on Facebook, saying he wishes "Mdna" would've turned out differently and blaming the album's failure on rush marketing and timing.
"[Madonna] was on form and better than ever with her singing and writing and musicality, and was having a great time," writes William Orbit, who previously collaborated with the pop star on her 1998 album "Ray of Light," which won four Grammy awards. "We had songs lined up that were breathtaking."
But then, from the sounds of it, things turned sour. After one fan comments on Orbit's page, noting that "most people are writing off" the...

I’m pleased to wish a very happy birthday to singer, actress, film director, producer, author, and businesswoman Madonna Louise Ciccone. You've maybe heard of her-- she turns 53 today. Raised in a Roman Catholic Italitan-American household in Eastern Michigan, Madonna moved to New York in 1977 to pursue dance and music. There, she performed in the groups The Breakfast Club and Emmy before a demo tape recorded with then-boyfriend Stephen Bray found its way into the hands of local DJ Mark Kamins. The 24-year-old singer was signed to Sire Records in 1982, releasing the early hit singles “Everybody” and “Holiday” before her self-titled album dropped in late ’83. If you grew up watching MTV, you know how the story goes from there…
