A bunch of sequels and a remake are vying for the Best Visual Effects Oscar this year, many of them from Disney, including Bill Condon’s live-action remake of Disney’s classic “Beauty and the Beast,” Marvel’s “Thor: Ragnarok” and Lucasfilm’s upcoming “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”
Three Fox films offer stunning VFX: “War for the Planet of the Apes,” which advances its visual effects technology over the last Matt Reeves installment featuring Weta Digital’s astonishing array of digital apes led by performance capture master Andy Serkis as Caesar, could win Weta’s Joe Letteri (“Avatar,” “King Kong,” “The Lord of the Rings”) his fifth Oscar. Brad Paisley just can't resist a good love story. On Saturday night at his concert in Laughlin, Nevada, the singer showed two fans just how far he'll go to make sure they have a happy ending. Two weeks ago, Paisley fan Jason Smith brought his girlfriend Courtney Larger to Paisley's Phoenix show with an engagement ring in his pocket, hoping to be noticed by the singer and get the chance to pop the question on stage. When his plan was thwarted by a worker who kept Smith from getting close to the stage, the 30-year-old insurance adjuster set up a...

The final battle sequence in "The Avengers" is one that's hard to forget. Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow and Hawkeye team up together to take down the invading Chitauri army and defeat Loki in what ends up being a massive fight that stretches across New York City. It's impressive to behold, and we have the folks over at Industrial Light & Magic to thank for it.
In a new featurette, some of the supervisors at Ilm explain how they made the epic scene work. After filming at over 1200 different locations around NYC, the Ilm team combined digital and actual footage to show Iron Man flying in one long shot through the battle sequence, and they even had to replace some of the actual actors with digital replacements to make it work.

There is a certain percentage of people out there who love dressing their babies/ little kids in overly complicated outfits. Given how often kids vomit, fall down and get into disgusting situations, I.ve never really understood this, except on Halloween. Every successful parent should put their little kid in at least one outlandish costume for cute and hilarious purposes later. Oh by the way, when you were two, you went as Gollum for Halloween. I.ve had this opinion for awhile, but even my craziest fantasies about any future children I might have never approached Jason Smith.s. The father recently decided to build a joint Halloween costume for himself and his daughter that would resemble the Power Loader from Aliens. It apparently took two nights and a day, but all that time was definitely worth it. Check out this madness below. I really hope this girl grows up...

Matching parent-child costumes are gaining popularity this Halloween, with many parents deciding to combine costumes with their offspring.
Jason Smith, a very crafty father and fan of the cult favorite "Aliens," took the concept to a whole new level this week, creating a "Power Loader" costume, based on the alien-fighting contraption from the film.
(Story continues below photo.)
While many others have attempted to recreate James Cameron's alien-fighting creation, this may be the first version of the costume to feature a baby in place of Sigourney Weaver.
Constructed from cardboard boxes and hot glue, the robot suit took two nights and a day to build, according to a YouTube video posted by Smith. Smith's daughter fit snugly into a Baby Bjorn carrier in the front, and the entire costume only weighed about 10 pounds -- plus the weight of the baby, of course.
For safety's sake, most of the costume could be taken apart easily.

Confectionary brand Allen’s has launched a new campaign intending to make more Australians smile more often with its new ‘Smile Makers’ initiative.
The campaign centres around the idea that people smile only 15 times a day on average, and Allen’s wants to encourage Australians to smile more by sharing the things they do and say to make others smile.
The ‘Smile Makers’ campaign is not to be confused with the new brand of sex toys, Smile Makers vibrators, led by the Monkey’s creative partner Micah Walker.
The first stage sees the campaign touring Australia, with activations in each of the capital cities along with ten towns across the nation during June. A character called Bravo Child is asking Australians in each town what makes them smile.

Most of us here at Pwhq have Olympic fever, and however you feel about the rest of the coverage, there's one cool way to follow these games that we've never had before: Athletes themselves are tweeting the experience! Indeed our debut stud of the day Chris Plys is one of Vancouver's most prolific tweeters, but a lot of members of Team USA are active Twitterfolk. This past weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, I had the privilege of sitting down with a few other members of the media to talk with legendary artist Jim Lee about his involvement in DC Universe Online, the upcoming Mmo for the PC and Playstation 3. We were able to get some insight in to what he learned from the game, the first mention of an expansion from any party involved in the game and even the future of All-Star Batman.
John Carle: First obvious question, how was it working on an Mmo for the first time?
Jim Lee: How was it working on an Mmo? I’ve been working on it for over four years, so it feels long, but good. I mean I feel like it’s like weight training or something. (Laughs) Like its hard work but at the end of the day, you come out stronger and better for it.

Van Halen are suing Nike over an alleged design similarity between Eddie Van Halen's iconic "Frankenstein" guitar and a new line of the sportswear company's sneakers, according to reports. But in a statement to Footwear News, Nike has now called the lawsuit without merit.
"Based on the information provided to us, we have not infringed on any rights held by Mr. Van Halen," the statement read. "Nike's Dunk shoe design is not substantially similar to any of the Van Halen designs, and Nike has not referenced the 'Van Halen' name or image as part of any marketing campaign or promotional material associated with the shoe."
