The European Film Academy (Efa) has unveiled 462 film professionals as new members in an announcement timed to coincide with Europe Day on May 9.
The new arrivals will be eligible to vote in the academy’s European Film Awards, the region’s equivalent to the Academy Awards, as well as contribute to its other initiatives across the year.
The Efa said a record number of professionals had accepted to join the organization this year, adding that 50% were female, 49%, were male, and 1% defined as non-binary.
The bigger intake comes amid a drive to revamp the academy which recently announced it would be moving the Efa ceremony to January in 2026, from its traditional December slot, to make it more relevant in the annual film awards season culminating with the Oscars.
The Efa currently now counts 4,600 members based in 52 countries.
The new members mainly hailed from Germany (68), France (38), Switzerland (37), Poland (36), Italy (33), Spain (24), UK (28) and...

Overcoming the hurdles posed by the health crisis, Le Groupe Ouest has followed through on the support promised to the eight projects developed by emerging authors who attended its writing residency. "For the very first time, only 50% of the Ouest Group’s Annual Selection process took place on the beaches of Plounéour-Brignogan in 2020. The other half of these sessions were forced to unfold online on account of Covid. And yet the eight chosen projects are a cocktail of considerably rare potency, broaching urgent, necessary and powerfully human topics." For Antoine Le Bos and Charlotte Le Vallégant, who are co-directing the screenwriting mentoring residency, satisfaction is inevitable given the full support these authors were offered between April and December 2020, and by consultants who are themselves scriptwriters. The 2020 Annual Selection, which consists of six first full-length films and two second...
The 16th annual Bradford International Film Festival, which will run March 18-28, is a total celebration of all forms of cinema, from classic films to modern world cinema to a tribute to Cinerama and more. But, most excitingly, is a bombastic collection of some of the best, most exciting underground films being made today.
From Bad Lit’s perspective, the most thrilling screening of the entire 10-day affair is the new film by British filmmaker Peter Whitehead, Terrorism Considered as One of the Fine Arts. In the U.S., Whitehead is a “lost” filmmaker from the underground’s heyday in the ’60s, being left out of most histories of the underground movement. Whitehead directed several influential films, including Wholly Communion and The Fall, before dropping out of filmmaking in the mid-’70s.
Film historian Jack Sargeant wrote extensively about and interviewed Whitehead for his wonderful book on Beat cinema, Naked Lens.
