LONDON -- The British Film Institute on Friday revealed a £1 million ($1.9 million) restoration of what it called "the greatest film find of modern times, the film equivalent of Tutankhamen's treasure." The documentary film by Edwardian businessmen Sagar Mitchell and James Kenyon shows workers at a north of England colliery in 1906, a spring fair in 1901, a Blackpool seaside resort in 1904 and a Manchester United soccer game in 1902. The film was lost in the 1920s when the pair's company folded. Workers discovered 800 original nitrate film negatives in 1994 when their old shop was being renovated. A local film historian recognized the film's significance and contacted the BFI. A three-part BBC series titled The Lost World of Mitchell Kenyon was to air Friday and a special compilation of the films will be shown around the country in February by the BFI, which said there will also be an accompanying book and DVD release.
