The K-drama My Happy Ending keeps swerving every time we feel like we’re reaching a certain conclusion. The show that stars Jang Na-Ra in the leading role of a CEO who has bipolar disorder seems to be somewhat confused with what its true implications are. We all know it’s currently a “trend” (for lack of a better word) in the Korean entertainment industry to represent mental illnesses. Up until now, most of the shows we’ve seen have done a decent job of this; however, some of them do come across as straight PSAs. I suppose it all started with how well-received “It’s Okay to Not Be Okay” was. As much as I appreciate the intention, sometimes I’m left wondering if it’s really there or if it’s simply for the sake of ticking off the right boxes. My Happy Ending is a melodrama that goes...

Two-part extravaganzas have always been huge gambles for their creative teams. Hollywood is no stranger to shooting back-to-back sequels, from “The Matrix” to “The Hobbit” to Netflix's recent “Rebel Moon” saga, and Asian cinema has followed a similar path. John Woo split his expansive Han Dynasty battle epic “Red Cliff” in two for much of its worldwide distribution, while Bollywood's “Gangs of Wasseypur”(with its initial 319 minute runtime) has seen many iterations, first as two films, then as eight much shorter episodes for its Netflix distribution. In all of these cases, there is a gravitas that comes with the filmmaker's vision, bursting with ideas and flourishes that cannot be contained in the average one-off cinema experience. Yet with that comes a crucial hope for the goodwill of the audience, that they're willing to come back, buy another ticket and sit back down to see the conclusion of the story.

“Closing Dynasty,” which received its world premiere at Berlinale earlier this year, tells the story of Queenie, whose life isn’t like that of other kids her age.
“To an adult onlooker, she might seem lost among the towering New York skyscrapers, but 7-year-old Queenie has a clear goal: to make money,” reads the logline. “Hustling for donations, collecting bottles, impressing passers-by with her crafty salesmanship – she’ll do whatever it takes. You can put your fears to rest because Twinkling Watermelon has concluded perfectly. As K-drama viewers, we’re always afraid that our favorite shows (when ongoing) is going to end terribly (and a lot of them do). But Twinkling Watermelon has fortunately not followed the pattern and managed to be a fantastic slice-of-life drama, even with all its emotional parts. Episode 15 ended with Yi-Chan saving Eun-Gyeol from being hit by a car. Fortunately, the show doesn’t push the idea that Yi-Chan would only end up happy if the accident didn’t happen.

By the sound of things, the "Xo, Kitty" cast quickly developed a close bond - though two of the cast members are actually family members, which was apparently a big surprise for everyone.
It turns out that Gia Kim and Sang Heon Lee, who play Yuri and Min Ho, are actually real-life siblings. In an interview with Teen Vogue, fellow star Minyeong Choi opened up about how the cast found out they were related. "I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say this, but . . . did you know that Gia [Kim, who plays Yuri] and Sang Heon are siblings in real life?" Choi said of the "mind-blowing" revelation. He went on to reveal that the news had come to light when Lee asked if he could add his sister to a cast group text.

Portland, Or – Comics and graphic novel publisher Ablaze notably expands its webtoon manhwa catalog with The Awl, a moving and socially conscious series about the struggles of workers at an oppressive Korean big box superstore as they strive for better lives and working conditions. The work is by creator Choi Gyu-Seok, who was also the artist of The Hellbound, a manhwa series adapted into a live action show and streaming on Netflix now.
The Awl is critically acclaimed and the recipient of the Korean Cartoon of Today Prize and caused a stir by raising public awareness about acute labor problems when it was originally published. It was also adapted to a successful TV series in South Korea by the Jtbc network. Ablaze will launch the 6-volume series in print with the debut of Volume 1 this December.

As Fantasia 2023 continued into its second week I had the pleasure of seeing a variety of quite different and interesting films.
Two of them were 'body swap' films. In one of the films this swapping was intentional.

Much like the number of days with good air quality in New York City this summer, the number of films available as 70mm prints isn’t as high as perhaps it should be. This presents a challenge to the Museum of the Moving Image and its annual See It Big film series. But this year, the beloved Queens museum is capitalizing on interest in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” by including a print of “Inception” that allows viewers to go deeper into the film’s picture quality.
At least that’s the theory.
Associate Curator of Film Edo Choi breaks 70mm prints into two categories: native prints shot on 65mm film (the extra 5mm is used for the soundtrack) and “blow-ups” that expand the image from a 35mm print onto larger film stock. The “Inception” print the museum is showing is a little bit of both.

The great Choi Min-sik was on hand to take early headlines at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BiFan).
Described somewhat blandly as “a highly reliable performer” by the Korean Film Council (Kofic), Choi is not only the star of Korea’s top grossing film of all time “The Admiral: Roaring Currents,” he continues to be available for work of all different levels. He appears in no less than ten titles that played at the festival this week.
The festival also does reliable — in its own way – as it plays up to its “stay strange” mantra, cooperates with other festivals of a similar fantasy leaning and sidesteps the political infighting that currently bedevil Korea’s best-known festivals.
The selection runs from a documentary about Korean reunification to Anurag Kashyap’s “Kennedy,” a crime drama in which former adult movie star Sunny Leone gets to show that she has evolved into a versatile and confident actor.

South Korea is known globally for its web series, movies and K-pop, with content including Squid Game and Parasite and groups like BTS and Blackpink becoming household names internationally. But there is another Korean cultural export – webtoons and their associated IP – that is starting to have an impact, not just in Korea, but around the world.
Webtoons are comics that have been designed specifically for mobile phones. Unlike Western comics and Japanese manga, they’re composed of single panels arranged vertically so that they can be easily scrolled through with one hand while you’re using the other to hang off the strap of your local commuter train.
Originating on the platforms of two Korean tech giants, Daum (which was later absorbed into Kakao) and Naver, in the early 2000s, the format is already huge across Asia and has become an invaluable source of IP for the region’s booming streaming industry.

Seoul, June 30 (Ians) Samsung Sdi has completed the pilot line for all-solid-state batteries and will begin producing samples in the second half of the year, its CEO has said.
Choi Yoon-ho, president and CEO of the South Korean battery maker, made the remarks during an in-house event, referring to the solid state battery pilot line in its Suwon research and development centre, 30 kms south of Seoul.
“We have completed the pilot line for all-solid-state batteries and are ready for sample production in the second half of the year, Choi said during the event celebrating the 53rd anniversary of the company’s establishment.
Solid-state batteries are considered a game changer that would significantly reduce fire risks because they use a solid electrolyte, instead of the liquid and gel electrolytes used in lithium-ion batteries, reports Yonhap news agency.
They also have a higher energy density, which allows for a longer driving range.

Choi was found dead by police at his home in the Yeoksam district in southern Seoul at 9:41 a.m. Tuesday, according to police and fire authorities on Wednesday. According to the Yonhap news agency, authorities in Seoul report that Choi appeared to have died by suicide.

Netflix’s Bloodhounds is an excellent example of a show that is fun, simple, and still engaging. The straightforward story is elevated by the presence of two popular actors who have excellent chemistry throughout the series. The bromance is palpable and makes for a refreshing and fun watch amongst the dark subject matter of such shows we’ve been watching recently. So, it is obvious that after finishing the first season, there’s a demand for more of the show, even if it’s just to see this budding bromance and have a hearty laugh. Of course, the streaming giant has made no official announcement of another season, and the webtoon was completed back in 2020, but the popularity of the show might as well lead to exciting outcomes. There are no cliffhangers at the end of the first season, and the show ends on a happy note, but there is always scope for more,...

Myeong-Gil is not a very unique k-drama villain; in fact, he’s got a laundry list of trait that makes him fit very well with a dozen others in the specific genre that Bloodhounds fits in. Still, there’s something interesting about him because we don’t learn much about his past in the series, which solely focuses on the good guys. Unlike a lot of such characters, Myeong-Gil doesn’t have much integrity and is happy to stab someone in the back when they’re looking away. Myeong-Gil’s arc just goes from bad to worse and keeps worsening until there’s nowhere for him to go to save himself. Greed is a powerful emotion that is irrational and can take over a person’s mind and body entirely, and Myeong-Gil is the purest example of this. Myeong-Gil is great with his words and has a sharp tongue that...
