As one of the most beloved animated movies of all time, and my own personal favourite, it should come as no surprise to hear that Pixar are working on a 3D re-release of Brad Bird’s instant classic, The Incredibles.
Talk of a sequel has been circling for years, with Brad Bird reiterating as recently as last year that it’s still something he thinks about. So whilst we eagerly await more news on that front – because I think Bird would only want to do The Incredibles 2 if he knew it would be every bit as amazing as the original – we can all look forward to seeing the studio rework the third dimension into the film.

On August 14th and 15th, I attended the Finding Nemo 3d Press Junket in San Francisco, CA. I believe Crush, one of the loveable sea turtles from the film, sums the whole trip up best with this memorable quote:
“Saw the whole thing, dude. First you were all like “whoa”, and we were like “whoa”, and you were like “whoa…” ”
Nemo, an adventurous young clownfish, is unexpectedly taken to a dentist’s office aquarium. It’s up to Marlin (Albert Brooks), his worrisome father, and Dory (Ellen DeGeneres), a friendly but forgetful Regal Blue Tang, to make the epic journey to bring Nemo home. Their adventure brings them face-to-face with vegetarian sharks, surfer dude turtles, hypnotic jellyfish, hungry seagulls, and more. Marlin discovers a bravery he never knew, but will he be able to find his son?

Back in October, we outlined a handful of projects that Disney — in response to the money earned by re-releasing The Lion King in 3D — has in mind for 3D-converted theatrical releases. There were two Pixar titles among that crop — Finding Nemo, which will hit theaters on September 14th, and Monsters, Inc., which will kick off Disney’s 2013 on January 18th of next year.
The Disney/Pixar honchos aren’t through just yet, however — the latter’s 3D supervisor, Bob Whitehill, has announced that a 3D conversion of Ratatouille is currently in the works, with the film’s director, Brad Bird, overseeing the process. [Upcoming Pixar]
There’s no announced release date yet, though considering the breadth of space dividing the theatrical releases of Nemo and Monsters, Inc., a debut sometime during 2013′s second half would be a reasonable projection. (The 3D conversion of Nemo, by the way, just received a trailer a...

Besides the opening of this looking like Attack of the Clones, the trailer for John Carter certainly looks promising. The set pieces look vast in scale as Pixar's Andrew Stanton goes live action. The Wall-e director has been beavering away on Carter for quite some time now, and while not shot in 3D, the movie will be converted ( I hear groans) into the third dimension. But before those groans continue, Stanton has acquired Bob Whitehill, who is one of Pixar's 3D guys. "I’ve gotta say, what I’ve seen, I’ve been pretty blown away by. There are some scenes that I must admit are better in 3-D, do I don’t think that people feel that they’re just getting pimped out for more money.” But note that that title card says 3-D will be in “select” theaters. “I shot it intentionally as a 2-D film,”. The director...

[1] In June, I visited the editing room of John Carter, the big screen adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' classic sci-fi novel A Princess of Mars (you can watch my video blog here [2]). At the event, director Andrew Stanton and producer Jim Morris gave a presentation explaining how they came to be involved with the project, and described the unique process they took to "shoot" the adaptation. After the jump you will find a complete transcript of the presentation and question and answer session, along with some concept art from the film and photos from the event. Producer Jim Morris: This is where he made a lot of his films from here, including 'Amadeus.'A lot of music has been produced over the years here, a lot of jazz greats as Credence Clearwater Revival and so forth. We got the space for our art department and editorial offices, which starting now,...

Here’s a nice little Easter egg from the short which sites in front of Toy Story 3, called Day and Night.
If you’ve not seen Day and Night, it’s rather a hard one to explain but basically has two characters who are have translucent bodies, one shows all things day, and one all things night. When they meet, they show one another the highlights of what it’s like to be a day, and a night! At one point, Day watches an open air , night-time cinema and Pixar have released a still frame fmo the short which shows a bunch of Cars (or Cars 2 in this case as a nod to their movie coming out next year) watching a film.
Pixar have revealed (on their official Facebook page) that the film they are watching is another nod to the same TV show that the 101 Dalmatians watched back...

Last night was the UK Premiere of Toy Story 3 in London’s Leicester Square. Our friends from Upbeat were there with their camera and got interviews with director, Lee Unkrich and Producer, Darla. K. Anderson.
Unfortunately none of the cast of the movie were able to make it to the UK premiere but many of your favourite characters from the movie were there. If it’s interviews you’re after, fear not as we have interviews with many of the cast from the movie here and interviews with the team behind the movie including Pixar Archivist, Christine Freeman (view here), Stereoscopic Supervisor , Bob Whitehill (view here), Production Designer, Bob Pauley (view here) and Lead Animators, Bobby Podesta and Mike Venturini (view here) and finally director Lee Unkrich and producer Darla K. Anderson which went up earlier today here.
Toy Story 3 is released in UK cinemas today.

"Cars" may be Pixar's creative low-point, but its ancillary revenue streams like merchandising have raked in billions for the company over the years.
Thus it comes as no surprise that the company is reportedly developing "Planes", a semi-sequel/spin-off that will be the company's first followed through foray into the lucrative direct-to-video arena reports Movieline.
Both "Toy Story" sequels at one point were previously slated to go direct to video before development was shifted into making them theatrical releases. With "Planes" the company can "leverage the Cars brand without diluting its bigscreen appeal". In fact the upcoming "Cars" sequel could prove a hell of a tie-in to help promote it.
At the same time Pixar is looking into doing 3D conversions of their older films, specifically "Ratatouille" as director Brad Bird "is very open to some changes, you know, some very subtle changes but slight reframing" says "Toy Story 3...

Photo: Paramount Pictures via the Los Angeles Times Will the Hulk be played again by Edward Norton? No. Joaquin Phoenix? Nope
It now appears the role will likely go to Mark Ruffalo as Deadline reports Ruffalo is "now in late-stage discussions between Marvel and his brand-new agency United Talent" to play the Hulk in Marvel's The Avengers to be directed by Joss Whedon. The film is already set for a May 4, 2012 release with production expected to begin sometime early next year.
This isn't the end of the superhero news, however, as the same Deadline report adds both Thor (May 6, 2011) and The First Avenger: Captain America (July 22, 2011) will be in 3D with Captain America's visual effects to be rendered in 3D and Thor undergoing more of a traditional 2D-to-3D conversion a la Alice in Wonderland and The Last Airbender. This is just a speculative rumor for now, but there is a quote to back it up, and it certainly seems plausible. Our friends at SlashFilm (via Bleeding Cool) noticed in the interview on HeyUGuys with Bob Whitehill, Pixar's "Stereoscopic Supervisor" (note: stereoscopic = 3D), that he talks about working with Brad Bird to re-render scenes of Ratatouille into 3D. I use the term "converting" in the headline, but Pixar can simply re-render the original frames just like they did with Toy Story 1 and 2 to turn their older movies into 3D. I didn't think the re-release of those two movies in 3D was a big success, but maybe Disney thought it was. Here's the key quote from the interview with Whitehill where he talks about converting Ratatouille to 3D. "Ratatouille is one that we're exploring doing [3D conversion on] and Brad Bird is very open to some changes, you know, ...

Pixar has already returned to the money-regurgitating well twice now with 3D re-releases of Toy Story and Toy Story 2, which returned to theaters simultaneously last year. Now it appears as though other entries from Pixar's library may be getting a similar treatment, according to a recent interview with the studio's stereoscopic (3D) imaging supervisor, Bob Whitehill. Ratatouille is the current contender being taken into consideration, and apparently director Brad Bird is open to the process. More info after the break. Bleeding Cool found the quote, which was originally from a video interview by Hey U Guys. Ratatouille is one that we’re exploring doing [3D conversion on] and Brad Bird is very open to some changes, you know, some very subtle changes but slight reframings. If a character’s reaching forward and a pinky goes off screen, we’ll adjust the camera and the character a little bit to have the hand on.

MakingOf recently paid a visit to the Pixar Studios in Emeryville, CA and sat down with stereoscopic supervisor Bob Whitehill to discuss the use of 3D in "Toy Story 3." Below is the full transcript of our roundtable interview.
Q: After converting the first two “Toy Story” films to 3D, how was it making the third film in 3D and possibly going further?
Bob: It was really helpful in that we could figure out a lot of scale issues. You know, you’re kind of traveling between two worlds: the world that they live in, the toy chest and Andy’s room and then out into the human world so we had a pretty good idea about how we wanted to handle the “separations,” as we call them, the pixel separations and offsets. And it became quite easy, frankly, to sort of leap into “Toy Story 3” with all that knowledge...

Today has been one of the most crazy but cool days of the eventful year that HeyUGuys has been in existence. We also have a couple of cameos from John Lasseter and Ed Catmull which was a wonderful surprise as I don’t think even the organisers knew they were going to be there. I’ve placed a few photos of me having fun at Pixar and with some of the people mentioned above but check out the video below for a run-down of my day!

Watching a movie in the cinema that is nearly 10 years old may seem a bit odd but when it comes to Toy Story, I’ll take any chance I can get to see it on the big screen, especially if it’s screened at the world famous, Oscar winning digital effects company, FrameStore!
