The “Dune” prequel series at HBO Max has brought Johan Renck onboard to direct the first two episodes.
Renck will also serve as an executive producer on the show, currently titled “Dune: The Sisterhood.” It was ordered straight-to-series at HBO Max in June 2019. Previously, “Dune” director and co-writer Denis Villeneuve was attached to direct the pilot for “Dune: The Sisterhood,” but his work on the “Dune” sequel film will prevent him from doing so.
The show is set 10,000 years prior to the events of “Dune” and follows the Harkonnen Sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind, and establish the fabled sect known as the Bene Gesserit.
Renck won two Emmys for his work on the critically-acclaimed HBO limited series “Chernobyl” — one as an executive producer when the show won best limited series and another for best directing for a limited series, as he directed all five episodes.

Exclusive: Director Dexter Fletcher has just signed with CAA, on the eve of Thursday’s world premiere of his Elton John musical film Rocketman at Cannes. Paramount releases the film May 31.
Fletcher, who had been at Wme, is rocketing off replacing Bryan Singer on Bohemian Rhapsody for the final weeks of production and post production. Though Singer remained the credited director, Fletcher’s contributions were widely noticed in a film that became an out-sized success, with Rami Malek winning the Oscar for Best Actor, the film nominated for Best Picture and a whopping global gross north of $900 million.
Fletcher’s star is rising fast, but he certainly has been at it a long time, first as an actor and then as producer, writer and director. He began as an actor at age nine, and as an adult was part of the casts of films including Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels,...

Saturday Night Live star Kenan Thompson is a step closer to moving from late-night to primetime. His starring vehicle, the single-camera Saving Kenan (form. Saving Larry), has been picked up to pilot by NBC. The project, from SNL creator/executive producer Lorne Michaels and his Broadway Video as well as Superstore executive producer Jackie Clarke, had a big pilot production commitment.
NBC ‘also has ordered to pilot Like Magic, a single-camera workplace comedy from Superstore writers Bridget Kyle and Vicky Luu, Forever co-creator Matt Hubbard, Julie Anne Robinson’s CannyLads Productions and Universal TV, where CannyLads and Hubbard are based.

Thompson likely will leave SNL — at least as a full-time cast member — should Saving Kenan goes to series as the two would be difficult to juggle. He is currently in his 16th year on the venerable late-night sketch program.

Apple’s content push continues as the tech giant announced that it has signed “Fast and the Furious” director Justin Lin to an overall TV deal under his Perfect Storm banner.
The multi-year deal will see Lin develop, produce and direct television series with a global perspective.
The deal means that Lin will leave Sony Pictures Television, where he’s been set up for the past six years after founding Perfect Storm in 2012. During that time, Perfect Storm developed three drama series that were aired on CBS — “Scorpion,” “S.W.A.T.” and the reboot of “Magnum P.I.” — as well as Cinemax’s upcoming “Warrior.”
