What happens when you gaze at yourself in a muddled puddle of self-reflection? For filmmaking duo Bill and Turner Ross, it’s all about turning the camera inward to look outward, courtesy of the cinema verité style.
The Ross Brothers’ latest feature, “Gasoline Rainbow,” follows five teenagers from small-town Oregon as they embark on one final adventure together after high school: reaching the Pacific coast, 500 miles away. Exclusive: The Gotham Film & Media Institute has today named the fellows set for the 2023 edition of its Festival de Cannes Producers Network Program, scheduled to take place in person at Cannes from May 17-22. The list includes independent filmmakers Maria Altamirano, Liz Cardenas, Leah Chen Baker, Yoni Golijov, Emma Hannaway Nikkia Moulterie and Carlos Zozaya.

The coming-of-age horror-drama follows teenager Casey who becomes immersed in an online role-playing horror game, wherein she begins to document the changes that may or may not be happening to her.
The film, which will have its NY premiere later this month at the New Directors/New Films festival, is the narrative feature debut of writer-director Jane Schoenbrun. Utopia will release the film in U.S. theaters early next year and also has international rights. HBO Max has licensed U.S. streaming rights.
With an original score by Alex G, the movie stars Anna Cobb and Michael J Rogers alongside a number of performers appearing in various real and staged YouTube videos, including Theo Anthony, Evan Santiago, and the Asmr content creator Slight Sounds.

The 10th edition of U.S. In Progress Wroclaw, the industry wing of the American Film Festival in Poland which was held online this year, wrapped over the weekend and presented a variety of awards to the participating American film projects.
The awards range from post-production services to travel bursaries and cash. A $10,000 cash prize to be put towards post-production in Poland was awarded to the film To The Moon from director Scott Friend and producers Cate Smierciak, Everett Hendler, Stephanie Randall, and Gabe Wilson. Boaz Yakin ‘s romantic dance drama “Aviva” has been sold by Alief Film Company to several big territories.
An exploration of gender identity and self-expression through body language, “Aviva,” shot on location in Paris and New York and revolves around a pair of transatlantic lovers, Aviva and Eden. After a long courtship they meet in person and fall in love, settling into an intimate relationship that leads to marriage, but one, as many are, laced with conflicts. The two protaganists are played by four different actors expressing both masculine and feminine sides.
Alief Film Company has closed deals with Synapse Distribution for Latin America and Yes Dbs for Israel, following the film’s premiere in competition at the Haifa Film Festival.
The film also played virtually at SXSW, Fantaspoa, Choreoscope Spain and Mexico editions, where it won the top prize.

Logline: A 20-minute short about a female carpenter named Gepetto’s self-transformation into a reckless artist (Pinocchio) and her shifting relationship to the world of men. “Pinocchio’s Candy Lust” is a treatise on gender in relation to artistic identity.

Raising questions about multiple selves and the commodification of “artist” and “woman,” Gepetto, a disgruntled female carpenter, is confronted with the choice between acting responsibly and hating her life or (re)producing herself as Pinocchio. Carving a paintbrush and painting her body with woodgrain she undergoes a transformation so wild she destroys her whole village.
