the New York City Council from 1945-1950.
Succeeded William O'Dwyer as mayor of New York City when O'Dwyer resigned in the wake of a police scandal. Impellitteri had been appointed to head the City Council in 1945 by O'Dwyer at the behest of U.S. Congressman Vito Marcantonio, who pushed for Impellitteri as a favor to mobster Tommy Lucchese.
