- Led the American League in runs batted in (RBI) in 1955 & 1958-1959.
- Made major league debut on 18 April 1950.
- Outfielder with the American League's New York Yankees (1950-1952[start]), Washington Senators (1952[end]-1953), and Boston Red Sox (1954-1959 & 1961).
- In 1949, married his high school girlfriend Zoe Ann Olsen, who had won the silver medal in diving at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. The couple, who divorced in 1968, had three children: Jon, Jan, Jay.
