The release of Wes Anderson’s latest movie is just a few weeks away, and Focus Features have released a trio of Asteroid City character posters. They feature Tom Hanks (making his Wes Anderson movie debut), Scarlett Johansson, and Jason Schwartzman.
Written by Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola, Asteroid City is said to be a “poetic meditation on the meaning of life.” Set in a fictional American desert town circa 1955 and its Junior Stargazer convention, the film brings together students and parents from across the country for scholarly competition, rest and recreation, comedy, drama, romance and more, before being spectacularly disrupted by world-changing events. As you can see in the poster, the stacked cast of Asteroid City includes Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Ed Norton, Adrien Brody, Liev Schreiber, Hope Davis, Stephen Park, Rupert Friend, Maya Hawke, Steve Carell, Matt Dillon, Hong Chau,...

"We need to have beer!" An official trailer has arrived for another beer documentary called Brewmance, from filmmaker / beer aficionado Christo Bock. This profiles the localized craft beer movement that began in America and has gone on to take over the entire world. "Craft Beer" began with a group of restless home-brewers searching for something real and flavorful; it's become a global phenomenon of taste. That spirit of rebellion and innovation exists in two groups of home-brewers from Long Beach, California who will soon open their own breweries. With the insight & commentary of legendary brewers like Ken Grossman (Sierra Nevada), Fritz Maytag (Anchor Brewing), Charlie Papazian, Vinnie Cilurzo (Russian River), Sam Calagione (Dogfish Head), Jim Koch (Boston Brewing) and others, Brewmance reveals "the soul of craft beer in the heart of America." It looks like a great doc on how it's not really as easy as you think to make your own beer.

If you were at Alamo Drafthouse on Slaughter Lane a couple of Saturdays ago, you might have noticed something special was going on inside the 400 Rabbits bar. Alamo Drafthouse and Dogfish Head Craft Brewery hosted the 6th annual Off-Centered Film Fest. The live DJ and purple t-shirts with high tops on them expressed this year's hip-hop festival theme. Fest events included a live rap battle featuring Austin's owner indie-rap sensation P-tek, a screening of 8 Mile, a reunion of Sam Calagione's craft brew inspired hip-hop act Pain Relievaz and much much more.
The fest kicked off Thursday and continued through the end of the week. Calagione, the founder of the Delaware based Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, brought the best his brewery had to offer, while the Drafthouse and Antonelli's Cheese Shop worked closely together to insure the menu and the beer selection paired perfectly witheach event. Delaware-based Dogfish Head Craft Brewery and Alamo Drafthouse Cinema have teamed up again for the sixth annual Off-Centered Film Fest (Debbie's 2012 coverage). Beginning Thursday night, the three-day beer and food feast -- with a hip-hop theme this year -- will feature a sing-along, rap battle competition, DJs and a short film competition. Most events are at Alamo Drafthouse on Slaughter Lane, and proceeds will benefit the nonprofit Texas Craft Brewers Guild.
The homegrown festivities kick off with a 6 pm screening at Republic Square Park of Friday, a movie so ripe with wisdom and wit it'll make you say "daayymmnn!" The Ice Cube, Chris Tucker-fronted stoner comedy tells the day-long adventure of two neighborhood buddies in L.A.
Sam Calagione, owner of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery (Debbie's interview with Calagione), and Tim League, Alamo Drafthouse co-founder, have added more hip to their hops with Friday's first ever Jiggy Crunk Sing-a-Long.

The top-selling beer in America is Bud Light. One out of every two beers sold in America is manufactured by Anheuser-Busch. Another 25 percent of those beers come from MillerCoors (the two companies combined their distribution operations in 2007, and also distribute Pbr). In many bars in America, beers produced by Anheuser-Busch or MillerCoors are the only options you are given. If you go to a grocery store, most -- if not all -- of the shelf space is devoted to beers from these companies. Is it because those companies create the best beers? If you've ever had a Bud Light, a Coors, a Miller Light, or a Pbr, you already know the answer to that. They taste like toilet water.

As a craft beer enthusiast, my favorite show on the Discovery Channel this season is Brew Masters, which follows innovative and always entertaining Dogfish Head Brewery founder Sam Calagione as he travels across America and around the globe, exploring new ingredients and techniques for the next great brews often based on ancient traditions.
Calagione is no stranger to Austin -- he annually teams up with the the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema to host the Off-Centered Film Fest short film competition in Austin every April. This year is no exception and promises to be bigger than ever, with submissions for the festival currently being accepted. The early bird deadline is January 29, with a final deadline of March 1 to enter.

If you've seen Beer Wars then you'll know who Sam Calagione is and maybe even why international beer writer Michael Jackson called Dogfish Head, which Calagione founded, "America's most interesting and adventurous small brewery." Known for being off-centered, the brewery has worked with an archaelogist to recreate ancient brews including an ancient Turkish recipe using the original ingredients from the 2700-year-old drinking vessels discovered in the tomb of King Midas. So what does a Delaware brewery have to do with Austin film?
Calagione himself brings this off-centeredness to Austin by hosting the Off-Centered Film Fest, part of a two-night event at the Alamo Lake Creek. The annual event includes a beer and food pairing as well as a short film competition. Submissions are currently being accepted until March 1, 2010.

After watching Anat Baron’s new documentary, ‘Beer Wars,’ you are sure to want a cold one. An expert of the business and former general manager of Mike’s Hard Lemonade, Baron has an insider’s mindset when it comes to the world of alcoholic beverages and the corporate environment that surrounds them. Her film not only covers the big corporations of the beer industry, Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors, it sets its sights on the little guys, the companies that are struggling to survive in a market that is completely swamped. And, what’s more, she does so with a confident eye for filmmaking that makes ‘Beer Wars’ every bit as entertaining as it is eye-opening.
Baron utilizes several different techniques to get her points across, but none of them feel forced. She incorporates talking heads, found footage and even animation to express her ideas to the audience, and it all...
