- Was the first (acknowledged) man of non-European ancestry to occupy a position in the White House, being part American Indian (Kaw tribe). The only other White House occupant to have Native American ancestry (as far as is known) was President Bill Clinton, some of whose ancestors came from the Cherokee tribe.
