Watching the cosmic, otherworldly dread unfold in Jeffrey A. Brown's The Beach House was one of my favorite viewing experiences of 2020, so I was thrilled to find out that Brown is back with his next feature-length film, The Unheard.
With the supernatural sci-fi horror film now streaming on Shudder, I caught up with Jeffrey in a new video interview to discuss working with the talented Lachlan Watson, his personal connection to the film's story of hearing loss, and how he brought the film's creepy VHS aesthetic to life on screen. As an added bonus for fans of The Beach House, Jeffrey also talks about what his pitch for The Beach House 2 would have looked like!
You can watch the video interview with Jeffrey below, and in case you missed it, read Cass Clarke's review of The Unheard!

Before delving further into director Jeffrey A. Brown’s The Unheard, it’s important for me to note that this piece is written from the perspective of a hearing person who has experienced losing and regaining hearing due to illness, but I cannot speak to the Deaf experience. Part of the reason why I was so intrigued about this film was that I could relate to the in-your-bones anxiousness that comes with testing, evaluations, operations, and diagnoses that ultimately amount to the most frustrating phrase to receive in a doctor’s office: “We’ll see.”
Unlike films like Hush or A Quiet Place, The Unheard focuses on a protagonist – portrayed by the effortlessly cool Lachlan Watson (Chucky) – who lost her hearing after a bout of meningitis and seeks to regain partial or full hearing through an experimental operation. Once Chloe has the operation, she starts to hear things – perhaps warnings...

"The Maze Runner" star Kaya Scodelario feels every woman is powerful, damaged and a million other things, and that is what she wants to reflect in her work. The actress says she isn't interested in playing female characters that are just one thing, because they don't exist.
"For me, it is important (to essay a strong character) because it is realistic. That is the world I know. Every woman I know is strong in her own way," Scodelario told Ians in an exclusive sit-down interview.

Famed horror director Alexandre Aja, whose credits include The Hills Have Eyes, Horns, Piranha and Mirrors, returns to cinema screens after a three-year absence with Crawl. A creature-feature set during a category five hurricane in Florida. Crawl follows Kaya Scodelario’s Haley in a desperate state for survival with her father Dave (Barry Pepper) as they both become trapped in his basement that is flooding at an enormous pace. Only to be joined by a few hungry alligators for good measure.
Crawl is a return to form on a few levels. Namely elevating the genre from that of the dwindling and limited explosive creature feature genre that has been reappropriated for a more comedic and less cinematic fortune with features from production company The Asylum.

Nearly one decade after making viewers afraid to go in the water (without risking the loss of an appendage) with Piranha 3D, Alexandre Aja is bringing more submerged scares to the surface this summer in Crawl. Featuring a daughter (Kaya Scodelario) and her father (Barry Pepper) fighting for their lives against a hurricane and some very hungry alligators, the first trailer for Crawl has been unleashed by Paramount Pictures.
Directed from Aja from a screenplay by Michael Rasmussen and Shawn Rasmussen, Crawl will swim into cinemas on July 12th from Paramount. You can check out the synopsis and trailer below, and visit the movie's official Instagram page to see a creative mosaic for the film.

Paramount Pictures has picked up the rights to a horror short film called Meet Jimmy, which is said to be like a mix of The Ring and A Nightmare on Elm Street. The story basically about a killer podcast.
The short film, which was created by Dutch filmmakers David-Jan Bronsgeest and Tim Koomen, "revolves around a mysterious podcast that once listened to, has horrific consequences." Here's the synopsis for the short:
Meet Jimmy is about Jennifer, a young woman who is listening to a podcast about the notorious serial killer Jimmy TwoFingers.
He killed his victims by putting their fingers in their throats and letting them gag … until they suffocated. Despite the warning at the beginning of the episode (“They say you can tap the killer in person”), she turns on the podcast while she is waiting for her in a laundromat.
Slowly she gets the idea that Jimmy knows...

Before Avengers: Infinity War entered the scene, Paramount Pictures’ A Quiet Place was enjoying its second weekend perched atop the box office, having earned $21 million between April 20-22.
I know what you’re thinking, and you’re right, it might not seem like much, especially when compared to the gargantuan opening of the McU’s third Avengers installment. Nevertheless, the success of John Krasinski’s near-silent horror film, made on a budget of just $17 million, has been a godsend for the studio, which has struggled at the ticket booth for well over a year.
As a result of the film’s $236 million worldwide gross, Paramount Pictures Chairman and CEO Jim Gianopulos announced during the studio’s CinemaCon presentation last week that a sequel is indeed in the works. However, A Quiet Place 2 won’t be the only low-budget horror to enter production for Paramount this year.

Crawl, a new horror movie about a hurricane from Alexandre Aja, adds a terrifying wrinkle to an already horrible natural disaster.
Right now all of Hollywood is fawning over the box office might of superheroes, but there have been plenty of small to mid-budget success stories over the last year. A Quiet Place, for example, was last April’s Cinderella thriller was released by Paramount on a reasonable budget of $17 million and went on to gross nearly $240 million worldwide. Hence why Paramount might be eager to team with well-known horror auteurs like Alexandre Aja and Sam Raimi for a new original concept. So enters Crawl.
The film is working from a screenplay by Aja and Shawn and Michael Rasmussen. It also marks Aja's first feature-length directorial effort since 2016’s The 9th Life of Louis Drax. However, genre fans will likely know him best from his 2000s output,...

Directors/writers: Michael Rasmussen and Shawn Rasmussen. Cast: Evalena Marie, Dayna Cousins, Victoria Nugent, Michael Reed, and Rebecca Whitehurst. The Rasmussen brothers are probably best known for the work with John Carpenter on The Ward. This earlier title was a horror film with a strong psychological element. Carpenter does not direct the Rasmussen's Dark Feed. Instead, these two have taken on the filmmaking responsibilities, themselves. Unfortunately, they should have rehired Carpenter as Dark Feed stumbles through a weak premise, poor pacing, average acting and dimly lit settings. The end result is a 28Dla Worst Indie Film of 2013 nomination. The Rasmussen brothers first feature as directors sticks with the psychiatric hospital from their earlier work. Here, several characters are trying to put together an indie film. It is a film within a film, get it? The production does not go smoothly as murderous spirits move about the setting. A black ooze begins to pour out of.

Last week the directorial debut from Shawn and Michael Rasmussen - Dark Feed - arrived on DVD and VOD courtesy of Lionsgate Home Entertainment, who nabbed distribution for the indie psychological thriller last fall.
Also co-written by the Rasmussen Brothers, Dark Feed follows a film crew shooting a low-budget horror film at an abandoned psychiatric hospital with a shadowy past that seems to be coming back to life, feeding off its new inhabitants. As the shoot wears on, members of the crew exhibit increasingly strange behavior, leaving those unaffected realizing just how quickly the madness is spreading amongst them. The only problem is the hospital they're stuck inside doesn't want them to escape- at any cost.

I still haven’t watched John Carpenter’s The Ward yet so I can’t personally talk about the script. However, if it got Carpenter’s attention, I’m interested to see what other stories the writers can come up with. It looks like we won’t have to wait long to see the end result.

What if insanity were contagious and could spread like the common cold? Given the attitudes of some people in this world, you would think that is already the case, but the writers of John Carpenter's The Ward have a different spin to broadcast in Dark Feed.

Shawn and Michael Rasmussen really turned some heads when they penned the script for John Carpenter’s latest creeper, The Ward. The film was met with mixed reviews, but it’s a solid picture that does indeed boast a well-crafted script that, while a tad predictable, fit Carpenter’s style perfectly. Apparently the Brothers Rasmussen find institutes to be quite compelling locations for stories built on the foundation of terror, because they’re headed right back to a psychiatric hospital.

*here be spoilers.
Director: John Carpenter.
Writers: Michael Rasmussen and Shawn Rasmussen.
Cast: Amber Heard, Mamie Gummer and Danielle Panabaker.
The main problem with John Carpenter’s The Ward is that it tried too hard to be understood. Had it been subtler in its approach, than quite focused in providing some cheap scares, then just maybe, the darkness Kristen (Amber Heard) has been feeling can become real.
The issue here is that Carpenter, with writers Michael and Shawn Rasmussen were out to recreate some of the magic from Shutter Island, released earlier in the 2010 year, whilst their product was delayed. It did not screen until September at the Toronto Film Festival. Its theatrical release did not happen until a year later, so audiences are not saying that they had seen this movie before.
But The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari this product is not. Some imitators will succeed and others will fail.

News that maverick Bavarian director Werner Herzog has been cast as the villain in the forthcoming Tom Cruise thriller One Shot should come as no surprise to anyone who recognised the source of Hugo Weaving's devilishly accented performance in Captain America. There is something about Herzog's deadpan voice that suggests awesome, infinite, unworldly powers just waiting to be unleashed. It's a quality that he uses brilliantly in the documentaries that have become his signature works, enabling him to speak merrily of the "ecstatic truth" of art and the attendant "chaos, disharmony and murder" of the cosmos with a blend of quasi-religious import and pathos. When the day of reckoning comes, I half expect to hear Herzog's voice calmly separating the damned from the redeemed, the strangely comedic sound of a divinity that shapes our ends…

Stars: Amber Heard, Lyndsy Fonseca, Mamie Gummer, Danielle Panabaker, Jared Harris | Written by Michael Rasmussen & Shawn Rasmussen | Directed by John Carpenter
“John Carpenter? Now who in the name of Kurt Russell is that old timer?” I hear you ask, and not without warrant, as The Ward is the first film directed by cult hero Carpenter in nine years, since the less-than-stellar Ghosts Of Mars. Heralded as a return to form since a run of poorly received films including Vampires and the ill-conceived Escape From L.A., the film stars Amber Heard as institutionalized girl Kristen haunted by a violent ghost, along with four other damaged young women who seem to know more about the vengeful spirit than they let on.
Yes, this certainly is an old school horror flick, and is ironically all the more refreshing for it. The torture-porn of the last decade may be filled with gratuitous and elongated violence,...

John Carpenter’s best work exudes a kind of subtle magnetism rooted in minimalist atmosphere. Mainly I speak of Halloween and The Thing. Halloween stands among a golden few in the mostly empty slasher subgenre as an exercise in build-up. The Thing is all about environment and the paranoia that can wreak from it. Slasher tropes and environmental stigma mundanely come into play in Carpenter’s latest feature The Ward, his first full-length narrative since 2001’s Ghosts of Mars. The Ward shows off none of Carpenter’s abilities; it is a paint-by-numbers horror which can be thrown into the heap of forgettable and rote films the genre manages to produce year after year.
The year is 1966. A young woman runs through the woods in tattered undergarments. She approaches an abandoned farmhouse and sets it on fire. As she watches it burn, she drops to her knees; a big weight has clearly been lifted from her.

Shawn and Michael Rasmussen, the brothers who penned John Carpenter's The Ward, are building some buzz for their directorial effort Dark Feed. A series of images, including the one you see to the left, now reside on the film's Facebook page . They tell us their effort centers on a film crew shooting a low budget movie in an abandoned mental hospital with a shadowy past. The late nights and lack of sleep are taking a toll, and the longer this crew works, the more the leaky, wet building seems to be coming back to life, feeding off its new inhabitants. Something hiding in the hospital's walls is slowly seeping out and infecting their minds. Keep it here for more updates as they come in!

Director: John Carpenter.
Writers: Michael Rasmussen and Shawn Rasmussen.
Director John Carpenter has not directed a feature film for nearly ten years. In 2005, Carpenter participated in two 'Masters of Horror' episodes; so, he is still familiar with the genre, but that is a long way for Carpenter fans. Now, Carpenter's The Ward has been shown at several film festivals and the film is also available on video-on-demand, with a DVD release August 16th. Carpenter returns to the horror genre, as if he never left. The Ward is a psychological thriller with enough neuroses to fill up a few psychiatric hospitals and here Kristen (Amber Heard) tries to resolve some of these demons for the delight of viewers.
Kristen is admitted to the North Bend Psychiatric Hospital, after she sets fire to a local farmhouse. Strangely, she is not sent to prison, but to a dark, and haunted place.

The first teaser trailer for John Carpenter's (They Live) The Ward is here! In this short one minute clip actress Amber Heard (And Soon the Darkness) can be seen playing Kristen, a trouble young woman. After setting a farmhouse ablaze, she is housed in the North Bend Psychiatric Hospital for care. But here, she only finds ghosts and more tormented souls.
This film also stars Danielle Panabaker (The Crazies) and, unfortunately for North American horror fans, the United Kingdom will host filmings of this production first (January 21, 2011). This film has been pushed back from one release already (September, 2010), but here is one vote for a soon to be upcoming release. Will the real John Carpenter please (please) stand up?
The ten-year absence of one of cinema’s true genre masters understandably brings with it a weight of expectation, and at a festival such as Sitges that weight hangs just that bit heavier making it hard to head into the theatre with an open mind.
Fortunate then that this story unfolds in a time and place where Jc should feel at home. Set in 1966 in an isolated ward of a psychiatric hospital Carpenter employs a cinematic look and feel of similar examples from the 70’s (Halloween, The Shining and One Flew Over The Cuckoo’S Nest come to mind).

The best evidence that The Ward (which premiered this week at the Toronto International Film Festival) was directed by John Carpenter is that his name is above the title. It’s certainly not on the screen; working from a maladroit script by Sean and Michael Rasmussen, Carpenter—who hasn’t made a feature since 2001’s deliriously silly genre mashup Ghosts Of Mars—directs like a journeyman rather than an auteur.

Tiff’s Description:
When an old farmhouse is set ablaze by Kristen (Amber Heard), a distraught young woman, she is taken by police to the North Bend Psychiatric Hospital. She awakens in a special ward with four similarly unbalanced and wayward girls: Sarah, a flirty and sass-talking know it all; Iris, a sensitive and talented artist who tries to make her feel welcome; Emily, a reckless but playful outcast; and Zoey, who hides behind a childlike persona and her beloved stuffed bunny.
Kirsten.s therapist, Dr. Stringer (Jared Harris), tries to uncover the root cause of her breakdown, but despite his calm and understanding manner, she resists any attempts at help and rehabilitation.
