Lion Forge Entertainment and Penguin Young Readers have struck a new TV and film development pact to produce adaptations of several children’s books.
The deal will allow the entertainment company to develop and adapt a slate of titles from the division of Penguin Random House — and one of the industry’s leading children’s book publishers — into animated and/or live action properties. Titles currently selected for development span readership ages three to 12 and come from Penguin Workshop, Grosset & Dunlap and Viking.
“The creative team at Penguin Young Readers are as passionate about storytelling and world-building as we are at Lion Forge,” said Lion Forge Entertainment president and chief content officer Stephanie Sperber. “Their publishing list aligns perfectly with the content we bring to market, and we are eager to develop these books for kids and family audiences globally.”

The 10th edition of Cartoons Underground is once again online — so we at Asian Movie Pulse took the opportunity to see Southeast Asia’s rising stars. We recently interviewed the Singaporean festival’s student competitors over Zoom. Compared to last year, this year’s selection feels more somber. But perhaps that is because everyone is simply older. Our interviewees are all recent graduates with strong illustration backgrounds this time around. Two of Singapore’s three animation school powerhouses are represented here: Javon Chan Yi Da and Su Xian Yeow hail from Nanyang Technical University; Eiris Lu and Novella Lian stand in for Lasalle College of the Arts.
Their shorts display a range in medium as well. Javon Chan Yi Da’s “A Fish for a Friend” stands out as a Pixar-esque, stylized 3D animated short. Su Xian Yeow’s “Full Circle” leans heavily into print illustration, the film frames awash with blocks of color.

When lots of people think back on their childhood, many of the books they read often come to mind. There are certain stories that have been a part of people’s youth for generations, and The Very Hungry Caterpillar is one of them. Written by Eric Carle and originally published in 1969, the book tells the story of a caterpillar who is going through the process of becoming a butterfly. Since its release, the book has gone on to sell nearly 50 million copies, and it’s touched even more hearts. That being said, people all over the world were saddened to

As nominated by our writers, here are the books published in 2015 we can’t recommend highly enough…
Closing the final page on the very best books leaves you with a single urge: to share it. We’re talking about the kind of books that make you want to follow strangers down the road, tugging at their elbow and saying “seriously, you’ve got to read this”.
Here then, is our equivalent of doing that. These are the books published in 2015 that our writers felt compelled to share. If there’s one that you feel similarly enthused about, please do recommend away in the comments section...
The Rest Of Us Just Live Here – Patrick Ness
Yet more sharp, involving stuff from Patrick Ness whose Chaos Walking trilogy is comfortably one of the best sci-fi series of recent years. (While we’re on the subject, Ness’ A Monster Calls,...

Heather Morris is keeping busy! The Glee actress opened up to Us Weekly about her upcoming nuptials to fiance Taylor Hubbell and her son Elijah's latest milestones while attending the Gymboree and Eric Carle Collection Launch Event with her big boy in Santa Monica, Calif., on Friday, Sept. 5. Morris, 27, and Hubbell welcomed "Eli" (as she so lovingly calls him!) in September 2013 and got engaged last month. The star admits becoming a mother was a "life-altering change," but planning the pair's wedding has also been [...]...

As easily titled by another of its subject’s mottos—”Expect the Unexpected”—as what documentarian Brad Bernstein chose, Far Out Isn’t Far Enough: The Tomi Ungerer Story re-exposes the world to one of its most influential illustrators/commercial artists. Disappointed by my own ignorance to the name, I looked up his work and discovered nothing but a passing resemblance to other children’s art I had seen before. Only when the late Where the Wild Things Are author Maurice Sendak came onscreen to laud his friend and peer’s bravery for inspiring him to create one of our most cherished pieces of literature did I fully understand the importance of Tomi Ungerer‘s legacy. In fact, the only reason The Mellops Go Flying, Crictor, and Three Robbers aren’t in my memory is America’s Puritanical shortsightedness figuratively burning them decades ago to spare me their ‘unsavory’ author’s proclivities.

How can I possibly tell you how much I loved this book without sounding like I'm shilling for my friend? Rebecca Makkai and I attended Washington and Lee University together, though she was a year ahead of me. She was Miss Prism to my Reverend Chasuble in our collegiate production of The Importance of Being Earnest. She is a genuine friend. It was a massive point of pride to me when her short story "The Briefcase" made it into 2009's Best American Short Stories anthology. When she announced she was working on a novel, I offered to review it, mostly because I'm a giant fucking mooch and wanted the free advanced reader copy. I did it with the same caveat that I make to most indie filmmakers -- I'll check it out, and if I hate it, I'll just opt not to review it because they don't need some sonofabitch...

You'd think, with the way that Hollywood takes every fucking thing with a whiff of success attached to it and turns it into a movie (board games, children's toys, cartoons, bubble gum mascots) that they'd have already pillaged every successful book in the history of mankind. And you would be mostly right. In fact, in coming up with the list below, I discovered that all but 13 novels that have sold over 10 million copies have been turned into a feature motion picture at some point. Can you believe that? All but 13. And of those 13, several of them are practically unadaptable (though, Hollywood tends to find ways -- see the upcoming Monopoly or Battleship movies), or are way too short or way too long for a feature length film (again, not that it's stopped Hollywood in the past -- see Where the Wild Things Are and the Dr. Seuss movies). In fact,...

Travel Scavenger Eric Carle, the author and illustrator of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, has illustrated a beautiful line of learning games called Kinder-Ready.
The clever Travel Scavenger set ($10) is a little paper pad that comes with a washable marker. Take this along to the grocery store and your little one can find the baked goods that match Carle’s cute illustration of cherry pie. It also has sections for in the car, at the zoo or at a restaurant. This is a brilliant idea for keeping my 4-year-old son, Finn busy while we wait for his food to come! I just wish it was reusable.
