Otar Iosseliani, an award-winning film-maker, has died in his native Georgia, his French distributor said Sunday. He was 89.
Iosseliani made most of his films in France, where he was free to make films that were sometimes overtly critical of his home country. His death on Saturday night was confirmed by Regine Vial, from the Les Films du Losange company.

Belgian director Joachim Lafosse is done being silent.
Just like the family in his latest film “A Silence,” inspired by the real-life case of Victor Hissel: a former lawyer for two victims of killer Marc Dutroux, ultimately charged with possession of child pornography.
“To me, it’s not a dark story, because they do start to talk,” he says about the characters played by Emmanuelle Devos and newcomer Matthieu Galoux, slowly digging up the long-buried sins of their husband and father (Daniel Auteuil).
“Astrid and her children decide to step out of that criminal environment. With this film, I want to show how people can be violated by something like that, how difficult it is to shake off that shame and guilt. It’s difficult, but I think it’s possible.”
He also had to learn how to speak up, he says.
“In 2008, I made ‘Private Lessons.’ I didn’t say that at the time,...

Protagonist Pictures has closed a French distribution deal with Les Films du Losange on Riley Keough and Gina Gammell’s Cannes Camera d’Or winning directorial debut War Pony.
The deal marks the first American acquisition for Losange since Chloé Zhao’s The Rider, which Protagonist also sold internationally.
The announcement coincides with the screening of the film in competition at France’s Deauville American Film Festival today (September 5). The Rider also played at the beachfront festival in 2017 winning its Grand Prix.
Keough and Gammell’s coming-of-age tale about two young Native Americans set on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota enjoyed a warm reception in Cannes. The film world premiered in Un Certain Regard and won the coverted Camera d’Or prize covering all the first films throughout the official and parallel selections.
